Bengali migrants illegally held, says West Bengal; Supreme Court seeks response of 8 states

NEW DELHI: Supreme Court on Thursday sought responses from eight states, including Uttar Pradesh and Maharashtra, on a petition by the West Bengal Migrant Workers Welfare Board alleging unauthorised detention of Muslim migrant workers from WB on mere suspicion of being Bangladeshi nationals.

Appearing for the West Bengal govt-run board, advocate Prashant Bhushan accused police in UP, Maharashtra, Bihar, Odisha, Rajasthan, Haryana, Chhattisgarh and Delhi of arbitrarily detaining migrant labourers from Bengal and alleged that some were deported despite sufficient documents to prove Indian nationality.
Bhushan said the board had no objection to inquiries to establish nationality of Bengali-speaking Muslims, but detention should be only of non-Indians.
Seeking a restraint on such detentions, he was told by a bench of Justices Surya Kant and Joymalya Bagchi that the court would first consider the states' responses before passing any interim order. The matter will be heard again within a fortnight.
The petition, filed under Article 32, challenged the legality of these detentions in light of an MHA letter dated May 2, 2025, authorising inter-state verification and detention of suspected illegal immigrants - issued prior to Operation Sindoor.
The board said workers from West Bengal, mostly in low-income, informal sectors in these states, face systemic exclusion on linguistic and economic grounds, but did not explain why they still choose to work outside West Bengal. It alleged such detentions, without lawful procedures, violate Articles 14 & 15, erode dignity, and impede the right to livelihood.

Modi Hai To Mumkin Hai: Suvendu Adhikari On Demographic Survey To Expel Infiltrators

West Bengal Assembly Leader of Opposition Suvendu Adhikari praised Prime Minister Narendra Modi's initiative, particularly the survey on demographic changes and the warning to expel infiltrators from India. Adhikari believes these actions are significant gains for the nation. He supported the PM's warning to expel infiltrators, citing Mamata Banerjee's failure to provide land for 540 km of border fencing, which has led to Rohingyas and Muslims from Bangladesh encroaching on Indian land. Speaking to reporters, Suvendu Adhikari said, "The Prime Minister Modi's special initiative today to conduct a survey on demographic changes and his warning to expel infiltrators from India are the biggest gains for us. Nation First, we must protect our country. Mamata Banerjee did not provide land for 540 km of border fencing, which is why Rohingyas and Muslims from Bangladesh are encroaching on our land." PM Modi announced the launch of a 'High-Power Demography Mission' during his address to the nation on Independence Day. Adhikari accused these infiltrators of grabbing tribal lands in tribal areas, exacerbating local tensions. He highlighted several key achievements under PM Modi's leadership, including the abrogation of Article 370, the construction of the Ram Mandir, abolition of Triple Talaq, the enactment of the Waqf Bill, and the implementation of One Nation, One Election. "In tribal areas, these illegal infiltrators are grabbing tribal Prime Minister abrogated Article 370. During his tenure, the Ram Mandir was built in Ayodhya. Triple talaq was abolished. The Waqf Bill has been passed under his leadership. This Prime Minister will bring One Nation, One Election in India, 'Modi hai to mumkin hai," he further said. PM Modi, on Friday, from the ramparts of Red Fort, announced the launch of a 'High-Power Demography Mission', citing concerns over demographic changes in border areas and said that it is a threat to national security. PM Modi warned against infiltrators affecting the livelihoods of Indian youth, targeting the sisters and daughters, and misleading tribal communities to seize land. Prime Minister Narendra Modi cautioned the nation about a conspiracy aiming to change India's demography and said, "I would like to alert the nation about a concern, a challenge. Under a well-thought-out conspiracy, the country's demography is being changed, and the seeds of a new crisis are being sown. Infiltrators are snatching away the livelihood of the youth of my country. Infiltrators are targeting the sisters and daughters of my country. This will not be tolerated. These infiltrators mislead innocent tribal and capture their land. The country will not tolerate this." He further noted that changing democracy is a national threat. He said, "When demographic change takes place in border areas, it causes a threat to national country can hand it over to I would like to say that we have decided to start a 'High-Power Demography Mission'..." Earlier today, Prime Minister Narendra Modi hoisted the tricolour at the Red Fort on the 79th Independence Day.

China-Pakistan Nexus Equipping Terrorists In J&K With Advanced Technology: Report

STOCKHOLM: China-Pakistan technological nexus has drastically changed the security landscape in Jammu and Kashmir, systematically equipping terrorist organisations with sophisticated military-grade communication systems and surveillance technologies, a report cited on Friday. It stated that what were once conventional insurgency tactics have now evolved into advanced digital warfare capabilities, altering the dynamics of cross-border militancy. 'The strategic alliance between Beijing and Islamabad has created a formidable supply chain for advanced military hardware. According to the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute's 2025 report, China accounted for 81 per cent of Pakistan's arms imports between 2019 and 2023, totaling approximately $5.28 billion. This partnership extends far beyond traditional weaponry, encompassing dual-use technologies that have found their way into terrorist arsenals across Kashmir," the report in European Times highlighted. According to the report, the April 22 terrorist attack in Pahalgam underscored the extent of the technological infiltration in the region where security forces seized Huawei satellite phones, Chinese-manufactured GPS devices, body cameras, and encrypted communication systems from the attack site. These recoveries marked a shift from unsophisticated militant operations to coordinated, technology-driven warfare that capitalises on Chinese infrastructure and expertise. It further mentioned that the cutting-edge network architecture enabled terrorists to coordinate in real-time, while keeping their operations secure. The operational impact, it stated, was visible during Operation Mahadev, when Indian security forces tracked terrorists using signals from a Chinese satellite phone activated in the Baisaran area. However, the elimination of three Lashkar-e-Taiba operatives, including the alleged mastermind of the Pahalgam attack, highlighted not only technology's capabilities but also its weaknesses when effectively countered. China's engagement, the report detailed, extends beyond hardware to building a comprehensive digital infrastructure. Through the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor, the telecom towers operated by China Mobile Pakistan (Zong) across Pakistan-occupied Kashmir provided digital coverage that reached Indian districts, including Kupwara, Rajouri, Poonch, and Uri. This network, the report said, created multiple layers of operational support for terrorist activities. It also emphasised that China's supply of sophisticated communication systems, surveillance capabilities, and weapons technology allowed Pakistan to deny any direct involvement while it escalated the lethality of terrorist operations. The China-Pakistan collaboration has led to several destabilising effects. "The entrenchment of Chinese technology in Kashmir's militant ecosystem represents more than a tactical evolution; it constitutes a strategic challenge to Indian sovereignty and regional stability. The China-Pakistan nexus has created a sophisticated support system that enhances terrorist capabilities while maintaining plausible deniability for state sponsors,' the report noted.

Losing hope on Jammu and Kashmir being granted statehood, says CM Omar Abdullah

Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah on Friday said that his hope about the restoration of statehood to Jammu and Kashmir is fading, PTI reported. 'My well-wishers told me something big for Jammu and Kashmir will be announced from Delhi on Independence Day,' the chief minister said during his Independence Day address in Srinagar. 'I was even told that papers were being prepared [for statehood]. We waited, but nothing happened.' VIDEO | Independence Day 2025: Addressing a gathering at Bakshi Stadium in Srinagar, J&K Chief Minister Omar Abdullah says, 'More than six years have passed since the people of Jammu and Kashmir last heard their representative address them from here. When I last spoke from this… — Press Trust of India (@PTI_News) August 15, 2025 Abdullah further announced that over the coming eight weeks, he and his team would go door to door across all 90 Assembly constituencies to collect signatures in support of restoring statehood, The Indian Express reported. These signatures will be presented before the Supreme Court, he said. 'We will ask them if they want J&K to be a state again or not,' Abdullah said. '… If they are not ready, then I will accept my defeat and accept that J&K is satisfied with these conditions. Abdullah also called the Supreme Court's remarks on Thursday as unfortunate, The Indian Express reported. He said that while Pakistan was 'punished for 'three-four days', the people of Jammu and Kashmir, who have raised their voices against such attacks, have been punished for years. 'We are not with the Pahalgam attackers,' the National Conference leader said. 'We do not accept the Pahalgam attack. But despite that, today the Pahalgam attack is being used to deny us statehood.' On Thursday, the court noted that ground realities in the Union Territory, including incidents such as the terrorist attack in Pahalgam, cannot be ignored. Statehood for Jammu and Kashmir The Bharatiya Janata Party-led Centre had abrogated Article 370, which gave special status to the erstwhile state, in August 2019. It also bifurcated the state into two Union Territories: Jammu and Kashmir, and Ladakh. In December 2023, the Supreme Court upheld the validity of the 2019 order abrogating Article 370 and ordered the Centre to restore statehood to Jammu and Kashmir. In January, Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah said that he wanted to give the Centre the 'first opportunity' to restore the Union Territory's statehood before seeking legal recourse. The National Conference leader told reporters that Prime Minister Narendra Modi had himself committed to restoring the statehood of Jammu and Kashmir. 'Every government or every individual has recourse to courts,' Omar Abdullah said. 'But that was never going to be our first option.'
