Argentina beats Uruguay in penalties, finishes third in Copa America Femenina 2025
Argentina had lost the semifinal on penalties, but this time, it ended on the other side of the result, winning the contest 5-4 against Uruguay. The result meant the Argentines finished third in consecutive editions of the tournament.
'I think they have surpassed my dream. This team leaves the Copa América undefeated, and that is a source of pride,' Germán Portanova, Argentina's head coach, said after the match.
'Uruguay is a team that competes very well. It was a close match; we knew it was going to be really tough.'

Aldana Cometti opened the scoring for Argentina in the 24th minute before Esperanza Pizarro restored parity 11 minutes later. Juliana Viera netted another for Uruguay at the brink of half-time, pushing the Argentines to the back foot.
Just when it looked like Uruguay would win the match – it would have been its joint-best finish since 2006 — it conceded a penalty with about 10 minutes left before the full-time whistle.

Florencia Bonsegundo converted from the spot, and nothing separating the two sides in extra time took the match into spot-kicks.
Argentina converted all its penalties, while Stephanie Lacoste's miss for the Uruguayans in the fourth round of kicks handed a well-fought victory to the Albiceleste.
'We know that Uruguay is tough. I congratulate them for their grit; they are a team that, if they keep working, can go far. We wanted everything, in the end, that's how football is,' Cometti said.
'We didn't want to go to penalties, but we managed to win today. I wish it had happened in the last match. We're happy,' she said.

1 2 Jaipur: Egypt's Yassine Shohadi and Nour Khafagi have been given top seeding in the men's and women's categories, respectively in the first leg of the HCL India Squash Tour 2025 starting at the Sawai Man Singh Stadium here on Monday under the joint aegis of the Squash Rackets Federation of India and HCL. Star Indian squash players Joshna Chinappa and Nirupama Dubey withdrew just a day before the start of the tournament, allowing Rajasthan's Chhabi Saran to enter the main draw. Squash Rackets Federation of India vice-president Surabhi Mishra said here on Sunday that Egypt's Yassine Shohadi has been given the top seed in the matches starting from Monday. Japan's Tomo Endo has got the second seed, Sri Lanka's Ravindu Laksiri has got the third seed and Malaysia's Darin Pragasus has got the fourth seed. Surabhi Mishra informed that Suraj Kumar Chand is the only Indian in the top 8 in the men's category, who has been given the sixth seed. India's Rahul Baitha, Aryaveer Diwan, Ayan Wazir Ali and Diwakar Singh will also challenge. Surabhi said that in the women's category too, Egypt's Noor Khafagi is the top seed. Egypt's Menna Waleed is second, Japan's Akari Midorikawa is third, while Malaysia's Go Zhi Xuan is the fourth seed. Centre unsure of T's Khelo India & Olympic bids
Hyderabad: Chief minister A Revanth Reddy is keen for Telangana to host the 2026 Khelo India games; however, the Centre has informed Parliament that it is currently unable to confirm the feasibility of this proposal. It also clarified that Telangana's Olympic bid falls under the authority of the Indian Olympic Association (IOA). In a reply to Congress MP Kiran Kumar Reddy, the sports ministry said, "To conduct the Khelo India games, the ministry designates a state as the host. Selection is based on the availability of essential resources, such as sports infrastructure, adequate hotel accommodation, smooth physical connectivity to the venues of different events, and various other technical requirements. Therefore, it is not possible at this stage to decide whether Telangana will be a host state for the future Khelo India Games. " Regarding Telangana's bid to host the Olympics, the ministry explained that the Olympic games in India are the responsibility of the IOA, and the allocation of hosting rights is made by the International olympic committee (IOC) through a detailed host selection process, which is publicly available. Antim, Manisha shine at World Wrestling Championships trials; Vaishanvi has a breakthrough day to remember
It was an easy day for Paris Olympian Antim Panghal, who faced no resistance from her competitors in the 53kg category trials on Sunday at Indira Gandhi Indoor Stadium and booked her berth for the World Wrestling Championships. Already a World Championship medallist with bronze in the last edition, Antim went past Pooja in the semi-finals, dominating the bout and her 'fitle' move resulting in injury to her opponent. In the final, Antim was the superior wrestler and defeated Hinaben to ensure her participation at the tournament for the second time. Coming on the back of two Ranking Series wins, Antim is expected to be one of the seeded Indian wrestlers at the World Championships. The 20-year-old Antim will be hoping for some redemption after her controversial participation at the Olympics last year, where she got in trouble for misusing her accreditation after her early exit from the event. Antim admitted making 'mistakes' but insisted it was just a case of confusion in Paris. 'The federation did not have any issue with me. There was confusion, I also made mistake. I did not realise that it was getting out of hand. Olympics is different from Asian Games and World Championships. I did not know much,' she told reporters. 'There was a Games village, which was also there at the Asian Games but we had stayed at a hotel in the Asian Games (Hangzhou), there was confusion, I had never experienced such an environment. There was pressure and I spoilt my bouts due to that. Then I was asked to be at the camp. The federation has been helpful, I was sent to two tournaments where I won gold.' Antim added. Recently crowned Asian Champion Manisha Bhanwala was one of the two wrestlers in the 62 kg category and defeated Mansi Ahlawat 2-1 in the final to book her berth. In the 68 kg category Nisha Dahiya, was in action, but her return from injury (sustained during an Paris Olympics bout against Park Sol Gum) was cut short in the first round by Radhika, the eventual winner of the category Ankush won in the 50 kg category while Priya Malik overcame a stiff challenge from seasoned Kiran in the 76 kg category. The headliner of the day was Vaishnavi Patil of Maharashtra, who overcame years of falling short in the trials to achieve her first major breakthrough. The 65kg class, Vaishnavi first overcame Freedom Yadav in a bout where she trailed 0-4 but went on to win 10-6. She then defeated Haryana's Muskan 7-2 to seal her ticket. 'I am processing it right now. I have been constantly coming for trials, but I always miss out on the final berth. This feels like all of my hard work is finally paying off. However, this is just the start, and I have to win many more such matches,' Vaishnavi, who was ecstatic and almost breathless due to all the photo-op after her win, told the Indian Express on the sidelines. The selected Indian wrestlers will participate at the World Championships scheduled from 13th to 21st September in Zagreb, Croatia.
