TN has 97% Covid immunity for senior citizens, reveals serosurvey
The fifth edition of the survey targeted elderly persons in districts including Chennai, Tiruvallur, Tiruvannamalai, Trichy, Dharmapuri, and Kanyakumari.
Preliminary analysis of 1,214 samples from this group showed protective immunity of 97%, Health Minister Ma Subramaniam said here on Wednesday.
The state public health laboratory tested more than 25,000 samples per phase, selected through population proportionate sampling across the state, utilising techniques for uniform collection.
"We saw a boost in immunity since 2020. The first phase in Oct 2020 showed 32% immunity, which rose to 29% in April 2021 and 70% in Aug 2021. The same year in Dec, immunity was 87%," he said. Officials at the directorate attributed the increase in immunity to a combination of factors, including effective vaccination implemented during the pandemic and natural infection, leading to high immunity.
High seroprevalence means that a large percentage of people in the sample population have antibodies in their blood, Director of Public Health Dr T S Selvavinayagam said.
This indicates they were exposed to the SARS CoV-2 virus, which causes Covid-19, and carry proteins, antibodies produced by the immune system in response to an infection or vaccination.
They are a sign that the body encountered the pathogen and mounted an immune response, often leading to some level of protection against future infections, he said.
"We vaccinated more than 95% of the population with at least one dose of the vaccine. Besides this, natural infections due to the circulation of weakened mutations such as Omicron sub-lineages of the virus enhanced antibody development further. This could have contributed to hybrid immunity," he added.
Officials said high seroprevalence correlates with a positive public health outcome. "We know the virus has been largely unable to cause severe illness. We don't see Covid-19 causing deaths in people who are infected," he added.

While the doctor, unfortunately, couldn't survive, his wife is fighting for life. The elderly couple lived alone, and their suicide notes spoke of health struggles, loneliness, and unfulfilled dreams. While the tragedy points to the growing isolation faced by senior citizens, it also underlines the urgent need for emotional support systems for the elderly — especially those whose children live away. "We realised that though parents proudly send their children away for education and career, later in life, a deep void takes over. Jiwhala Club was born out of this very need — to fill that emotional gap and create joyful moments in their golden years," says Sangwai, the guiding force behind Jiwhala. Jiwhala Club 60+ has just completed six meaningful years. What began with a simple idea — to bring together senior citizens for birthdays and lunch outings — has now evolved into a thriving emotional community. The club organises monthly birthday celebrations complete with a homely satvik meal, a sweet dish, music, and long, heartfelt conversations. "During these gatherings, we talk about childhood memories, old workplaces, family anecdotes, and more. The idea is to reconnect with the joy of living," said Vilas Deshpande. "It also becomes a trusted place where people open up about their worries, health issues, and even their loneliness. The healing happens quietly," he added. Over the years, Jiwhala has built a reliable support system. From emotional management to helping with daily challenges, the group is always ready to step in. During the COVID-19 pandemic, they took risks to support elderly members with food, medicines, and emotional reassurance. In fact, Jiwhala has reached out beyond its circle too. In the last six years, it has financially supported around 30 single-parent girls by collecting donations from the community. It has also honoured unsung social workers and brought them to the public spotlight, even getting them TEDx speaking opportunities. "Happiness is our goal, and we are increasing the happiness index of our elders, one step at a time," added Narendra Kulkarni, one of the founder members. The club has become a second family for many. As members age, their bond with Jiwhala grows stronger. Some of them have said they wait eagerly for the club's get-togethers — it gives them something to look forward to, something to dress up for, and someone to talk to without hesitation. Each birthday celebration is not just about cutting a cake — it's about feeling seen, loved, and celebrated. Dr Gangadharrao Harne's death by suicide is a wake-up call. Jiwhala Club 60+ shows that small gestures, consistent care, and community support can go a long way in preventing such tragedies. Goa's births per year down by over 4,000 in just 10 years
Panaji: Over a period of 10 years, the number of births registered in a year in Goa has come down by 4,341. The lowest annual birth number was registered in 2021 at 15,396, a steep decline from 21,667 births registered in 2013, as per the office of the Registrar General of India's report 'Vital Statistics of India Based on Civil Registration System 2022'. The report also shows that after the Covid-19 pandemic hit, the deaths registered exceeded the number of registered births for the first time in 2021. The number of births registered during the year was 15,396, while the number of deaths recorded was 18,337. The numbers normalised by 2022 with 17,326 deaths registered against 14,990 births. However, the report confirms what state reports have earlier indicated: while the number of births has dropped by 4,341, the number of deaths registered has gone up by 2,794 over the years in Goa. This is contributing to a slowdown in Goa's population growth rate, as indicated earlier by the state's recent economic survey. Over a period of just five years, Goa's birth rate saw a dramatic drop from 13.3 per thousand in 2017 to just 9.7 in 2021. Such illnesses were found to form the cause of over 47% of natural deaths in Goa. Previous data from the Registrar General of India already established that Goa is among nine states with a fertility rate below the replacement rate, at 1.7 children born per woman. Though there are other states where fertility rates are even lower, Goa is the only state that has both a low fertility rate and the lowest birth rate in the country. The Registrar General of India's 2022 report, in the meantime, said that Goa was among 13 states and UTs in the country where more than 90% of the births were registered within the prescribed period of 21 days as per central norms. However, when it came to deaths, the registration in Goa within the prescribed 21 days was not as much and was in the 80-90% bracket. The report also said that though all birth and death records in the state are computerised and 'the system is functioning smoothly, effectively and efficiently', 'there is a possibility of damage to the physical birth/death records as the registers containing these records are worn out over the years'.
