Thai-Cambodia conflict: Wisma Putra told to provide updates on potential ceasefire, says Fahmi

PUTRAJAYA: Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has instructed Wisma Putra to monitor developments in the escalating border conflict between Thailand and Cambodia following positive signals from both countries regarding the possibility of a ceasefire.
Communications Minister Datuk Fahmi Fadzil, who is also the Madani Government spokesman, said the matter is in line with Malaysia's role as the Asean Chair for 2025.
Fahmi said Anwar informed the Cabinet that he had contacted Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet and Thailand's Acting Prime Minister Phumtham Wechayachai on Thursday (July 24) regarding the issue.
'At this point, there is a willingness from both sides to announce a ceasefire, and we are awaiting their statements.
'Following this, the Prime Minister has asked Wisma Putra to examine the situation and provide updates on the outcome of discussions between Thailand and Cambodia,' he said at his weekly press conference here on Friday (July 25).
Media reports stated that Thai and Cambodian troops clashed on Thursday in a disputed border area, with both sides accusing each other of triggering the latest confrontation.
Tensions between the two Southeast Asian nations have escalated since May 28 following a bloody incident in the Preah Vihear area, which claimed the life of a Cambodian soldier.
The two countries have been at odds over an 817km undemarcated border for decades, and the dispute continues to strain diplomatic ties.
Last Wednesday, the Thai government downgraded diplomatic relations with Cambodia after a Thai soldier was injured by a landmine, which Thailand alleged was recently planted in the area.
Cambodia later retaliated by downgrading its diplomatic relations with Thailand to the lowest level. – Bernama

Cambodian PM says 19% US trade tariff 'the best news'

PHNOM PENH: Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet on Friday welcomed a 19 percent trade tariff imposed by US President Donald Trump, avoiding a threatened levy of 36 percent. 'This is the best news for the people and economy of Cambodia to continue to develop the country,' Hun Manet wrote on Facebook. Trump had originally threatened a swingeing 49 percent tariff on Cambodia as part of his 'Liberation Day' measures aimed at rebalancing world trade in America's favour, but cut it to 36 percent last month. Dozens of countries face steep levies under the tariff regime approved by Trump in Washington on Thursday, set to come into force in a week. Cambodia is a major manufacturer of low-cost clothing for Western brands, with garment products accounting for most of its $10 billion in exports to the United States last year. Many factories in Cambodia are Chinese-owned and the White House has accused the kingdom of allowing Chinese goods to stop over on the way to US markets, thereby skirting steeper rates imposed on Beijing. The tariff announcement came days after Trump intervened to help broker a ceasefire between Thailand and Cambodia to end border clashes that left more than 40 people dead -AFP

Raise the flag: CM rallies Penangites to fly Jalur Gemilang with pride for National Month

GEORGE TOWN, Aug 1 — Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow has urged Penangites to proudly fly the Jalur Gemilang in celebration of National Month, calling it a symbol of Malaysia's sovereignty, unity, and national pride. He echoed Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim's call for all Malaysians, regardless of race, background, or political belief, to display the flag at homes, offices and business premises as a show of patriotism. 'The colours of the Jalur Gemilang carry the dignity of our nation, the history of our struggle, and the enduring spirit of independence,' Chow said at the launch of the Penang-level National Month and Fly the Jalur Gemilang campaign today. 'Honouring the flag means preserving harmony, rejecting divisive prejudice, upholding integrity and justice, and being responsible, progressive citizens,' he added. Also present were Penang state legislative assembly speaker Datuk Seri Law Choo Kiang and state secretary Datuk Seri Zulkifli Long. Chow said this year holds special significance for Penang as the state has been honoured with hosting two major national events. The first was the National Unity Week celebration, held from July 17 to 19 at the Penang State Stadium grounds in Batu Kawan. The second will be the National-level Malaysia Day celebration on Sept 16. 'The state government embraces this responsibility with a deep sense of duty, openness, and strong commitment to making these historic celebrations a success, serving as a platform to unite Malaysians from all corners of the country,' he added. He called on all Penangites to participate in the upcoming National Day parade at Batu Kawan Stadium on Aug 31, the Malaysia Day celebration and other events aimed at strengthening patriotism and national unity. 'We must fill the air with the spirit of unity, patriotism and pride as Malaysians who love our country,' he said. — Bernama

Reduction of US tariff rate to 19% a significant achievement, says Zafrul

PETALING JAYA: The reduction in the United States' reciprocal tariff rate from 25% to 19% on Malaysian goods is a significant achievement and displays Malaysia's thorough and methodical negotiating process and strong inter-agency coordination, says Tengku Datuk Seri Zafrul Abdul Aziz. The Investment, Trade and Industry Ministry said the reduced rate was a result of sustained engagement with the United States through various bilateral platforms. "The 19% rate roughly tracks the rate of other countries in the South-East Asian region. "Most importantly, Malaysia stood firm on various 'red line' items, and the 19% tariff rate was achieved without compromising the nation's sovereign right to implement key policies to support the nation's socio-economic stability and growth," he said in a statement on Friday (Aug 1). "To manage the implications of the 19% tariff rate, the ministry will continue to collaborate with other ministries and agencies to cushion the effects on Malaysian exporters," he said, adding efforts would also be made to support small and medium enterprises to adjust to the new tariff rate. Tengku Zafrul pointed out that the United States remains Malaysia's biggest export market valued at RM198.65bil and the top source of foreign investment with approved investments amounting to RM32.82bil in 2024. The 19% US tariff rate takes effect in seven days and applies to goods entering the United States for consumption, with limited exceptions for shipments already in transit. Signed on July 31, 2025, the order amends Executive Order 14257 and imposes revised ad valorem duties on multiple trading partners, including all major Asean nations. Malaysia, Thailand, Indonesia, the Philippines and Cambodia each face a 19% rate, with Vietnam slightly higher at 20%. Singapore continues to receive the lowest tariff rate among Asean nations at 10% but Laos and Myanmar face the highest at 40%.
