Former Tour de France, Vuelta stage winner Woods to retire at end of season
The 38-year-old, who made history as the first athlete to both run a sub-four-minute mile and complete the Tour de France, leaves the sport after claiming an individual stage victory at the 2023 Tour de France and with three stage wins at the Vuelta a Espana, the most recent of which came last year.
Currently racing for Israel Start-Up Nation, Woods took up the sport at the age of 25 after a successful running career.
While announcing his retirement, he spoke of the toll his career has taken on his health and family life.
"For the past five years, I have avoided giving my kids kisses when I pick them up from school in an attempt to prevent getting sick before a race. That is strange. More often than not, I sleep in another room, separate from my family, in an effort to optimize my sleep," Woods said in a statement on Monday.
"Every aspect of my life has been examined and studied to maximize my ability to ride a bike. That all-encompassing pursuit I have loved and have no regrets doing, but it is something that can only be sustained for so long.
"Considering I started this sport at 25 years old, on $1,000 bike gifted to me by my parents, knowing nothing about it, is insane. I thought, 'I was once one of the best runners in the world—why can't I be one of the best cyclists in the world?'"
Woods, who won bronze at the World Championships in 2018, said he still has ambitions in endurance sports.
"As they say, though, all good things must come to an end... I have made the decision to retire from professional road cycling at the end of this season," he added.

AFC Bournemouth v Wolverhampton Wanderers
Bournemouth have won three of their last five Premier League games against Wolves (L2), though all three victories have come at Molineux. Wolves have never lost in five Premier League away games against Bournemouth (W3 D2), making the Cherries the side they've faced most often on the road without defeat in the competition. Bournemouth lost their first Premier League home game in each of their first three seasons in the competition between 2015-16 and 2017-18, but they haven't lost their opening home game in any of their last five top-flight seasons (W2 D3). Justin Kluivert scored a hat-trick of penalties for Bournemouth in their 4-2 win over Wolves last season, with 25% of the goals scored in Premier League games between the teams coming from the spot (5/20), the highest ratio of any fixture with 15 or more goals. In March and April, Wolves won six consecutive Premier League games, scoring 13 goals and conceding just four. In their five games since then, they've lost four (D1), scoring just three goals and shipping 12, picking up fewer points than any other ever-present side since the start of May (1). Bournemouth have won three of their last 14 Premier League matches (D4 L7), including losing three of their last four (W1). The Cherries haven't lost their opening two league games of a season since 2017-18. Wolves have won just one of their last 22 Premier League matches in August (D10 L11), a 1-0 away win at Everton in 2023. Their overall August win ratio in the competition is just 14% (5 wins in 35 games), the lowest of any side to play 30+ games in this month. Only Sunderland (396) applied more high-intensity pressures on MD1 of this season's Premier League than Bournemouth (394), with striker Evanilson applying the joint-most high-intensity pressures in the opponent's half of any player (43). João Gomes made four tackles and conceded three fouls on MD1 against Man City, both the joint-most by any Wolves player in the match. Since Gomes' Premier League debut on 11 February 2023, he leads the way for both tackles (277) and fouls conceded (156) across the entire division.

Alejandro Kirk drives in three as Blue Jays defeat Pirates
August 20 - Alejandro Kirk hit a home run and finished with three hits and three RBIs to lead the Toronto Blue Jays to a 7-3 victory over the host Pittsburgh Pirates on Tuesday night. George Springer belted his 20th home run of the season, a two-run blast in the second inning off Pirates starter Mitch Keller (5-12) as Toronto scored three in the first and two in the second. Kirk pushed Toronto's lead to 7-1 in the top of the seventh with a two-run home run off Pirates' reliever Colin Holderman. Keller lasted 3 1/3 innings after allowing all five of those runs on seven hits and three walks while striking out four on 85 pitches. Springer and Nathan Lukes each produced two hits and two RBIs, while Myles Straw had a double and stole two bases to help the Blue Jays snap a brief two-game losing streak and halt the Pirates' equally brief two-game winning streak. Toronto's offensive resurgence backed up a strong outing from Max Scherzer (4-2), who threw 104 pitches over six innings. Scherzer collected his 220th career win after allowing one run on four hits and three walks, while striking out four. Bryan Reynolds, Joey Bart and Nick Gonzales each had two hits to lead Pittsburgh offensively. The Pirates chipped away at Toronto's lead with a run in the seventh and eighth innings. Ronny Simon drove in a sacrifice fly to score Bart and cut the deficit to 7-2. Jack Suwinski singled to drive in Gonzales in the eighth to make it a four-run game. But Blue Jays closer Jeff Hoffman prevented Pittsburgh from doing any more damage by working a perfect ninth with one strikeout in a non-save situation. Toronto loaded the bases in the first when Springer was hit by a pitch and Keller walked Addison Barger and Bo Bichette. Kirk hit a long single to score Springer and Lukes followed with a two-run single. The Pirates released left-handed pitcher Ryan Borucki on Monday. --Field Level Media

RB Leipzig step up Nkunku interest to provide Chelsea boost for potential signings
RB Leipzig have stepped up attempts to sign Christopher Nkunku on a permanent deal, potentially paving the way for Chelsea to accelerate their search for attacking reinforcements. Chelsea need sales before pressing ahead with moves for Leipzig's Xavi Simons and Manchester United's Alejandro Garnacho but their hopes of shifting Nkunku appeared to have hit a dead end when Bayern Munich's move for the forward stalled. Bayern had an offer for the Frenchman – a loan with an option to buy – rejected over the weekend and have so far shown little inclination of wanting to pay enough to buy him. Chelsea's preference is a permanent sale rather than a loan for Nkunku as he is not part of their long-term plans. Inter are also interested in Nkunku, whose contract runs until 2029, but a return to Leipzig two years after leaving them for Chelsea for £52m is a possibility. The 27-year-old forward is open to a reunion with his former club, although other options are on the table. A deal with Leipzig is not close but there is confidence that they will be able to come to an agreement with Chelsea on a fee for the France international, who has struggled for form and fitness during his time in west London. The clubs have already held talks over Chelsea adding Simons to their attacking ranks. Chelsea are yet to lodge a bid for the Netherlands international, who wants to move to Stamford Bridge, and hope to move out fringe players before making further additions. Aston Villa are interested in Nicolas Jackson but would need a significant drop in his £80m asking price if they are to pursue a deal for the striker. Jackson wants a new challenge after seeing Chelsea sign Liam Delap and João Pedro. Chelsea have also strengthened on the flanks, signing Estêvão Willian and Jamie Gittens, but they want more depth on the left. They are pushing to sign Garnacho, who is viewed as competition for Gittens, but want United to drop their asking price of £50m for the Argentina winger. Garnacho, who has reportedly turned down a switch to Bayern, has fallen from favour at United and Chelsea are unlikely to want to pay over £40m. Other players expected to leave Chelsea are Tyrique George, Axel Disasi, Ben Chilwell, Carney Chukwuemeka and Renato Veiga; the latter of whom is a target for Villarreal. Fulham are interested in Raheem Sterling. Meanwhile, West Ham have had a bid rejected for Chelsea's Andrey Santos. The Hammers are interested in the Brazilian but have been knocked back and have now made an improved offer for the Southampton midfielder Mateus Fernandes.
