Starbucks denies it is considering a full sale of its China operations
Starbucks has denied reports that it is in talks with private equity firms to sell the entirety of its China operations, as it faces slowing sales and intensifying competition from domestic rivals.
'We have a world-class team in China, and a strong brand,' the Seattle-based coffee chain said in a statement on Tuesday. 'We see significant long-term potential in the market and are evaluating the best ways to capture the future growth opportunities.'
The statement came after local media outlet Caixin Global reported on Monday, citing sources, that Starbucks was weighing the sale of its China unit, drawing potential buyers including Hillhouse Investment and Trustar Capital, the private equity affiliate of McDonald's China owner Citic Capital.

Starbucks shares rose less than 1 per cent in after-hours trading in New York, closing at US$92.34. The shares have fallen nearly 20 per cent from a peak in March.

Yet the government resisted pressure from China hawks in parliament to label China a threat on a par with Russia. The security review called it a 'geostrategic challenge' but also an essential player in tackling major issues such as climate change, global health and economic stability.

China President Xi urges Singapore PM to jointly resist ‘hegemony'
Chinese President Xi Jinping called on Singapore's prime minister to join the fight against 'hegemony' and protectionism in trade as they met in Beijing on Tuesday. Prime Minister Lawrence Wong's first official visit to China lasts until Thursday. He met Xi on Tuesday morning at Beijing's opulent Great Hall of the People, with the Chinese leader urging their two countries to work to 'stand on the right side of history and on the side of fairness and justice', according to state broadcaster CCTV. He told Wong that 'the world cannot return to hegemony or be dragged back to the law of the jungle', a veiled swipe at the United States, after President Donald Trump launched a barrage of tariffs this year on countries including China and Singapore. Wong, in turn, told Xi he believed the Singapore-China relationship was 'more important than before' in a time of 'global turbulence and uncertainty'.
