SAN DIEGO, CA, UNITED STATES, February 4, 2025 / EINPresswire.com / -- Tech-Angels, a youth-based nonprofit organization based in San Diego, California, is proud to announce the launch of its new partnership with the VA Medical Center-San Diego aimed at supporting senior veterans with the tools and knowledge they need to navigate the digital world.
Through donated technology devices and personalized tutoring, the organization is empowering veterans to stay connected with loved ones, improve their digital literacy, and enhance their quality of life by reducing social isolation.
As technology becomes increasingly integral to daily life, many seniors find themselves struggling to adapt to the digital landscape. The digital divide has left many veterans without the necessary skills or resources to take advantage of modern technology, leaving them isolated and disconnected.
Tech-Angels is addressing this gap by providing veterans and senior citizens across San Diego with donated tech devices, such as Apple iPads, Amazon Kindles and Samsung Galaxies, as well as offering one-on-one tutoring and training in digital literacy.
The new initiative with the VA is designed not only to help veterans learn how to use these devices, but also to ensure they can confidently navigate social media platforms, access healthcare and veteran services online, and maintain communication with family and friends.
'This partnership between Tech-Angels and the VA is a great intergenerational activity that can help establish communications across generations. The younger generation gets to hear the Vets' stories and the Vets feel the respect and compassion from the next generation, all while helping address technology skills that are often a challenge for those of us that don't live in the tech world day-to-day,' said Kim Elliott, director of Recreation Therapy in the VA Spinal Cord Injury Service.

Inside Cursor's hiring strategy: no AI in interviews and a 2-day project with the team
AI coding assistant Cursor, built by Anysphere, bans AI in technical screeners. Anysphere's CEO said programming without AI is a "great time-boxed test for skill and intelligence." Cursor's hiring process ends with two-days at the office, where candidates build real projects with the team. To get hired at Cursor, an AI coding assistant built by Anysphere, you can't use AI in your interview. "We actually still interview people without allowing them to use AI, other than autocomplete, for first technical screens," said Michael Truell, the cofounder and CEO of Anysphere, on an episode of Y Combinator's podcast published Wednesday. "Programming without AI is still a really great time-boxed test for skill and intelligence," Truell said, adding that those are core qualities he looks for in a teammate. There's another reason behind the rule: fairness. "We've hired lots of people who are fantastic programmers who actually have no experience with AI tools," Truell said. "We would much rather hire those people and then teach them on the job." That beginner's mindset can be a product advantage, offering fresh insights from first-time users, he added. The final step of Cursor's hiring process isn't a traditional interview. Shortlisted candidates are invited to the company's office for two days. They work on a real project alongside the team, join in for meals, and demo what they've built at the end. Truell said this setup helps them spot people who are genuinely passionate about the "problem space" — not just shopping around for a job. "You're probably not going to be super willing to do that if you're maybe just viewing it as a job and you're applying to a bunch of technology companies at the same time," he added. Cursor also looks for engineers who are eager to experiment. Truell said the company encourages carving out time for "bottom-up experimentation" — sometimes even sectioning off teams to build independently. Truell said in an episode of "Lenny's Podcast" published in May that early hiring at Anysphere was slower than it should have been. The goal was to build a world-class group of engineers and researchers — "a certain mix of intellectual curiosity and experimentation," he said. Anysphere, Cursor's parent company, raised $900 million at a $9.9 billion valuation last month, the company said last week. Business Insider's Eugene Kim reported earlier this month that Amazon is in talks with Cursor to adopt the AI coding tool internally. Cursor did not respond to a request for comment from Business Insider. Anysphere isn't the only AI company banning the use of AI in job applications. Business Insider's Alistair Barr reported last month that leading AI startup Anthropic will not let candidates use AI when applying for jobs. "We want to understand your personal interest in Anthropic without mediation through an AI system, and we also want to evaluate your non-AI-assisted communication skills,"Anthropic wrote in a job posting for an economist. The requirement was listed across multiple roles, including technical ones like machine learning systems engineer. About a week later, the company behind Claude backtracked on this policy. "We're having to evolve, even as the company at the forefront of a lot of this technology, around how we evaluate candidates," Mike Krieger, Anthropic's chief product officer, said during an interview on CNBC in May. "So our future interview loops will have much more of this ability to co-use AI." Brno Startups Leverage AI, Computer Vision, To Punch Above Their Weight
Brno, a mid-sized Czech city best known for its universities and research institutes, is becoming one of Europe's most dynamic tech ecosystems. Fueled by the regional innovation agency JIC led by director Petr Chládek, the startup incubator was founded over two decades ago by a consortium of municipalities and universities. A biologist and geographer by training, Chládek, has been the director of the JIC since 2017, told me in an interview that 'With the right balance of government support, academic excellence, and private investment, we're helping scale world-class tech companies.' Backed by strong academic partnerships, startups from Brno and the Czechia have global markets in their sights. Last week, I was able to see the results of JIC's efforts to boost local companies into the international ecosystem where they can form international partnerships within the EU, the US, and Asia. Their one-day Start-up Money conference on May 29th sought to bring together the region's leading startups with venture capital focused on early stage technology companies. Like counterpart conferences in the US, AI was in the air. VisionCraft now applies computer vision to physical rehabilitation. CEO David Tuč told me the goal is to introduce accountability and feedback into home physical therapy exercise, which many patients simply do not do. VisionCraft's new VisioTherapy platform uses motion tracking to deliver real-time feedback during at-home physical therapy sessions, which is shared with clinicians. They're raising funds to expand into the U.S. and Middle East. Lucas Loun, founder and CEO of Maia Labs Forbes Chechia Maia Labs was recently named Europe's Best HealthTech Startup for inventing ColoMaia, which adds computer vision to colonoscopy procedures, boosting cancer detection dramatically, by catching what a clinician can miss in real time. ColoMaia demonstrated a 43% increase in polyp detection rates during colonoscopies and, as further user incentives, reduces physicians' post-proceedure reporting time by 50%, Maia is already running pilots across Central and Eastern Europe, and just announced a trial with the Mayo Clinic in the US. Get Moments is an app that turns fan-shot videos from live events into personalized, shareable highlight reels using AI. Their AI editing engine automatically curates and assembles footage into branded videos in minutes. The platform has been tested at major events like the Sziget Festival, where attendees submitted over 30,000 videos, and at a Ben Cristovao concert, resulting in nearly 2,000 unique videos with a 48% share rate. Get Moments raised €500,000 from Purple Ventures in September. to enhance its AI-powered platform that transforms fan-generated content into personalized event highlight reels. While there is no way to know if it can scale into thousands of live events, not just music, but sports and wherever a crowd gathers. Motion capture. Kapnetix Kapnetix automates post-processing for motion capture in game development and visual effects. Kapnetix originated from a 2021 proof-of-concept project with 2K Games, leading to the development of AI tools that automate motion capture cleanup, significantly reducing production time for animators. Its tools reduce cleanup time from hours to minutes, allowing smaller studios to compete with AAA production quality while helping large productions stay on schedule and under budget. The company's AI solutions have attracted attention from major animation studios worldwide, including Disney Zaira, is a Brno-based space-tech startup which uses onboard, local AI to process satellite imagery in real time, rather than downloading scads of data from space. The startup has partnered with organizations such as the European Space Agency (ESA) and participates in Biomission 19 on the International Space Station and other commercial and defence missions. By filtering out irrelevant data like cloud cover before transmission, Zaira cuts communication costs by up to 98 percent. Zaitra just raised €1.7 million to expand into the US. Vrgineers, maker of the XTAL mixed-reality headset, just announced it's expanding its relationship with Lockheed Martin. Their systems combine high-end graphics with AI-enhanced realism, delivering cockpit experiences that rival actual flight. Several years ago, I tried their 4K/eye headset and it's dizzying to experience. I 'sat' in a virtual BMW and for a moment I couldn't get out because the virtual door did not open. VRfineers' Mixed Reality training systems are employed by the U.S. Air Force, NASA, and Airbus Defense. Over the past four years, $340 million in venture funding has flowed into Brno-region startups leading to $2.5 billion in VC exits. For investors, technologists, and founders alike, the message is clear: Brno is a rising force on Europe's tech map.
