MYSURU: Forest Minister Eshwar B Khandre on Wednesday announced that the state government will introduce amendments to existing laws and policies within a week to encourage private individuals to grow sandalwood trees.
Addressing a programme held at the KSOU auditorium, where safety kits were distributed to forest guards and watchers under CSR funds from Karnataka Soaps and Detergents Limited (KSDL), Khandre acknowledged that existing regulations have posed challenges to sandalwood cultivation.
'We will amend the policies in the next week or 10 days to simplify the process. Along with this, sandalwood cultivation will be promoted on degraded forest land and lakhs of acres of unutilised land under the revenue department,' he said.
Khandre also assured that all forest guards and watchers working in risk conditions will receive a monthly risk allowance of Rs 2,000. 'Currently, 2,007 forest guards are receiving the allowance, and we plan to extend it to all. Additionally, canteen facilities similar to those provided to police and defence personnel will be introduced for forest staff. Residential quarters and sufficient vehicles will also be provided,' he said.
Highlighting the increasing human-wildlife conflict, Khandre said: 'Karnataka is home to 6,395 elephants, the highest in the country, and ranks second in tiger population. To mitigate conflicts, rail barricades are being installed along forest borders.'
He further shared key achievements of the forest department, including the recovery of over 4,000 acres of forest land in Bengaluru and over 6,000 acres across the state. Around 15,000 acres of forest land have been added, 5,050 acres taken back from private entities, and Rs 5,000 crore worth land reclaimed from HMT.
KSDL eyes Rs 5k cr revenues
Industries Minister MB Patil said KSDL had been facing decline and corruption before the Congress government came to power, two years ago. 'Despite using the same staff and equipment, we implemented reforms that led to a 40% increase in production. Last year, KSDL generated Rs 414 crore in revenue. We aim to reach Rs 3,000 crore in two years and Rs 5,000 crore in five years,' he said.
KSDL currently offers 23 products and is set to launch liquid soaps and distribute sandalwood hand soaps to government offices and student hostels. 'We have added 435 distributors, entered the e-commerce space, and started producing jasmine soap and perfumes to meet the growing demand,' he added.

Chhattisgarh CM briefs PM Modi on water projects worth Rs 49K cr in Bastar
RAIPUR: Chhattisgarh Chief Minister Vishnu Deo Sai held a detailed meeting with Prime Minister Narendra Modi in New Delhi regarding the implementation of the multipurpose Bodhghat Dam Project and the Indravati-Mahanadi Interlinking Project. CM Sai proposed that both initiatives be taken up as national projects, highlighting their strategic importance for the holistic development of the Bastar region. Chief Minister Sai said that Bastar, having been severely affected by Naxalite violence for decades, has lagged behind in irrigation infrastructure. To bridge this gap and boost regional development, the state government is prioritizing these two key projects. During the meeting, CM Sai emphasized the strategic importance of these projects for Bastar, which has long suffered from Naxalite violence and underdevelopment. He informed the Prime Minister that of the total 8.15 lakh hectares of cultivable land in Bastar, irrigation facilities currently cover only 1.36 lakh hectares, highlighting the urgent need for expansion. According to CM Sai, the Bodhghat Multipurpose Dam Project, proposed on the Indravati River — a major tributary of the Godavari — will be transformative for Bastar. Although the project was mentioned as far back as the 1980 award by the Godavari Water Disputes Tribunal, it had remained unimplemented due to its remote location and security challenges. While other states have executed similar projects mentioned in the same award, Bodhghat remained unrealized — until now. Doubling the Pace of Development in Bastar Officials told TOI that Bodhghat project is expected to significantly expand irrigation facilities and catalyze Bastar's overall development. It will facilitate irrigation across 3.78 lakh hectares in the Kharif and Rabi seasons, generate 125 MW of hydroelectric power, ensure 49 million cubic meters of drinking water, and support an annual fish production of 4,824 metric tonnes — thereby creating multiple livelihood opportunities. The Indravati-Mahanadi Interlinking Project will enable irrigation across more than 3 lakh hectares of land, including 50,000 hectares in Kanker district alone. Combined, both projects are expected to bring irrigation to approximately 7 lakh hectares of farmland across the Bastar division — a game-changer for agriculture, water security, and employment in the region. The Bodhghat Dam is proposed on the Indravati River, which flows for 264 km within Chhattisgarh. The dam site is located about 8 km from Barsur village in Geedam block of Dantewada district and around 100 km from Jagdalpur city. Officials told TOI, the total estimated cost for both projects is Rs 49,000 crore — Rs 29,000 crore for Bodhghat Dam and Rs 20,000 crore for Indravati-Mahanadi link. The plan includes civil irrigation works and hydroelectric power infrastructure. The dam will have a usable water storage capacity of 2009 million cubic meters and a total capacity of 2727 million cubic meters, with a full reservoir area of 10,440 hectares. Bodhghat Dam Project will directly benefit 269 villages in Dantewada, Bijapur, and Sukma districts. Meanwhile, the Indravati-Mahanadi project will expand irrigation facilities to several villages in Kanker district. Together, these projects aim to build a stronger, self-reliant, and prosperous Bastar. Prime Minister Modi gave the proposals a serious hearing and assured consideration.

Raghubar slams govt for non-implementation of PESA Act
Dumka: Former chief minister Raghubar Das on Saturday criticised the state govt for being indifferent towards the implementation of the Panchayats (Extension to the Scheduled Areas) (PESA) Act, 1996, in the state. Das said, "The tribal society has been deprived of the benefits of the Union govt funds due to the non-implementation of the PESA Act though the community comprises the major support base of JMM, which is the ruling party in the state govt coalition. Jharkhand lost the Rs 1,400crore allotted by the central finance commission in the 2024-25 financial year as the state govt failed to introduce the PESA Act during its subsequent terms. The situation persisted even after JMM promised the electorate to implement the PESA Act in its election manifesto." "The implementation of the PESA Act would ensure 'Abua Raj' in real term as it would provide the traditional self-rule system of the tribal society a legal status in the 13 districts, comprising 112 blocks, which fall under the scheduled areas. The empowerment of the traditional self-rule bodies through the PESA Act will, in turn, go a long way in preventing the ongoing conversion of the tribals, otherwise being supported by the ruling alliance at the cost of the existence of the community and its culture," he alleged, accusing JMM of betraying the tribal society. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like This Device Made My Power Bill Drop Overnight elecTrick - Save upto 80% on Power Bill Pre-Order Undo The former Odisha governor further said, "The backward and Dalit community members were at the receiving end as central funds to the tune of hundreds of crores of rupees could not be released to the urban and rural civic bodies for development works. Finance minister Radha Krishna Kishore, through a letter to the CM, mentioned that the condition of Dalits was worse than that of the PVTG communities." While local JMM office bearers didn't respond, spokesperson for the state Congress, part of the ruling coalition, Shyamal Kishore Singh, refuted the allegations. "The state govt was committed to implement the PESA act. State Congress in-charge K Raju presided over a meeting with the party's district presidents on Saturday on the implementation of the PESA act. The district presidents have been directed to submit the reports to the party after due consultations with common people of the respective areas falling under the fifth schedule. " The state rural development department had held a state-level consultation with different stakeholders for seeking suggestions on the issue in Ranchi a few days ago.

Gold price cools, silver stays firm at 1.04L/kg in Ahmedabad
Ahmedabad: After breaching the Rs 1 lakh mark, cooled off on Saturday to settle at Rs 99,200 per 10 grams, down by Rs 700 in a single trading session. Silver, however, continued to stay firm at Rs 1.04 lakh per kg. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now Bullion traders and analysts attributed the correction in gold to easing geopolitical tensions and profit booking by investors after a sharp rally. "Some cooling was expected as gold touched record highs recently. However, overall sentiment remains bullish in the medium term," said a bullion dealer from the city. Silver, on the other hand, maintained its upward trajectory, buoyed by strong industrial demand and global market trends. Traders anticipate volatility in both metals in the coming days, hinging on international cues, inflation data, and interest rate signals from the US Federal Reserve. Despite the dip, jewellers have hopes pinned on muhurats and the festival season for demand to regain some momentum.
