Town to increase electricity supply after £8.4m substation upgrade
Homes and businesses in East Ayrshire and surrounding areas will have an improved power supply after an £8.4m substation upgrade.
SP Energy Networks confirmed it has successfully completed the multi-million-pound upgrade of the Kilmarnock town substation, which is set to boost capacity and resilience in the region.
Work on the substation started two years ago and focused on replacing two aging transformers and upgrading other substation equipment, including switching gear and circuit breakers.
The East Ayrshire substation can now increase capacity to meet future energy demands and allows more communities to benefit from secure and reliable supplies.
The investment is part of wider work to boost the transmission network across the UK, with electricity demand set to 'double by 2050'.
Jason Mcinally, project manager at SP Energy Networks said: 'With the completion of our Kilmarnock Town substation upgrade project, we're improving the reliability of the power supply for homes and businesses in Kilmarnock and surrounding areas.
'Kilmarnock is now better equipped than ever to meet the demands of a low-carbon future. For decades to come the region will play a key role in renewable energy generation, helping more people across the UK to access clean, green, secure energy.
'I'd like to thank our hard-working team and contractors who helped make this transformation happen and all with minimal disruption to the local community throughout.'
