Notre Dame loses TE Kevin Bauman and RB Kedren Young to season-ending knee injuries
SOUTH BEND, Ind. (AP) — Notre Dame announced Saturday that sixth-year tight end Kevin Bauman and second-year running back Kedren Young suffered season-ending knee injuries in practice this week. HT Image Notre Dame already was without Charles Jagusah, its projected right guard, after he was injured in a utility task vehicle accident in Wyoming last month. Jagusah had surgery to repair a broken humerus bone in his left arm, and coach Marcus Freeman said last week he's hopeful Jagusah will play this season. But Bauman won't play this year because of an articular cartilage injury in his left knee, which will require surgery. He also announced on social media this is the end of his football career. 'Unfortunately, I have suffered yet another season-ending injury. I have been struggling to let it all soak in,' Baumann wrote on Instagram. 'I have taken a few days and prayed about it. While my football journey has come to an end, I can confidently say the rest of my life is just getting started.' Bauman had his 2021 cut short because of an injury, missed all but three games in 2022 and all of 2023 because of injuries. He appeared in all 14 games last season and was expected to play a more significant role this season after Mitchell Evans was selected in the fifth round of April's NFL draft. He caught six passes for 67 yards and one touchdown. 'Notre Dame means everything to me: opportunity, growth, resilience,' Bauman wrote. 'I have made incredible connections and, most importantly, I have grown my faith to the strongest it has ever been. This place is so special.' Tight end Cooper Flanagan also is being held out of practice as he continues to recover from an injured Achilles tendon, which he suffered against Georgia during Notre Dame's playoff run. Freeman said he's optimistic about Flanagan returning this year. Young's career was just getting started when he tore anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee this week. The former Texas prep star rushed for 116 yards in seven games last season with the Fighting Irish. He was expected to add depth to an already stacked backfield. Young broke Lufkin High School's career rushing record before arriving at Notre Dame. The Irish open their season Aug. 31 at Miami. ___ Get poll alerts and updates on the AP Top 25 throughout the season. Sign up here. AP college football: and

Harris and Waldrep lead Braves past Marlins 7-1 as female umpire makes history
ATLANTA (AP) — Michael Harris II hit a 3-run homer, rookie Hurston Waldrep threw six strong innings and the Atlanta Braves beat the Miami Marlins 7-1 Saturday in the first game of a doubleheader that featured some Major League Baseball history. HT Image Jen Pawol became the first female umpire in a Major League game, working first base. She is scheduled to be at third base in the second game of the doubleheader and behind home plate in the series finale Sunday. Waldrep (2-0), in just his second start this season, allowed four hits, one walk and one run. He struck out six. He has given up two runs in 11 2/3 innings in his two starts. Harris was 2 for 4 with a double, three RBIs and two runs scored. His three-run home run in the seventh inning was his 11th. Drake Baldwin was 2 for 4 with two RBIs. Ozzie Albies and Eli White had RBIs in the second inning that gave the Braves a 2-0 lead. Rookie Ryan Gusto (7-5) gave up three runs in six innings in his Marlins debut. He was acquired from the Astros on July 31. Xavier Edwards knocked in the lone Marlins run with a single in the sixth inning. Braves left fielder Jurickson Profar robbed Agustín Ramírez of a home run in the fourth inning with a leaping catch, reaching over the wall in front of the Marlins' bullpen. Waldrep put both hands on his head when he realized Profar made the catch. The Marlins started six rookies in the batting order, plus a rookie starting pitcher in Gusto. For the second game of the split doubleheader, Marlins RHP Sandy Alcantara (6-10, 6.44) will face Braves newcomer Erick Fedde (3-12, 5.32). The right-hander will be making his third start for Atlanta since being acquired from the Cardinals. ___ AP MLB:

Roger Clemens returns to Yankee Stadium, questions about Mike Piazza bat-throwing incident resurface
NEW YORK (AP) — Roger Clemens came back to Yankee Stadium on Saturday, and so did the questions about his bat-throwing incident with Mike Piazza in the World Series 25 years earlier. HT Image Piazza was batting against Clemens in the first inning of Game 2 of the 2000 World Series when his bat shattered along the first-base line. Clemens picked up part of it and fired it toward the Hall of Fame catcher. Clemens made his debut in the Yankees' Old-Timers' Day game on Saturday and faced four batters in the first exhibition game of the event since 2019. His manager on the 2000 championship team defended the pitcher's actions in that at-bat against Piazza. 'There's still a question with the broken bat, with Piazza and the whole thing in Game 2,' Joe Torre said at the podium right as Clemens walked in. 'I think if Mike knew that the ball was foul, he wouldn't have been starting to run to first base. That ball went over the first base dugout, was foul right away. He didn't know where it was, so he started running.' Clemens made his first appearance as the Yankees honored the 2000 team, the last team to win three straight titles. Clemens heard a nice hand from the crowd as a montage of his highlights played on the center field video board — but omitted his famous toss at Piazza. 'I didn't know he was running and Mike said that same thing, too,' Clemens said. 'He didn't know where the baseball was. So my first instinct when I shattered that bat in about four pieces, I thought it was a baseball coming at me.' The Yankees went a combined 22-3 in the 1998 and 1999 postseasons, but struggled at times in 2000, losing 15 of their final 18 regular-season games, before outlasting the A's by winning a Game 5 on the road in the Division Series. After beating Seattle in a six-game ALCS, the Yankees beat the Mets in a five-game Fall Classic where every game was decided by two runs or fewer. Clemens joined the Yankees in a trade with Toronto during spring training in 1999. He was 14-10 with a 4.60 ERA in 1999 and then 13-8 with a 3.70 ERA in 2000. During the postseason, Clemens won three games, including Game 2 against the Mets. 'When he was on the other team, you didn't like him very much,' Torre said. After two seasons of an on-field question and answer session with radio broadcaster Suzyn Waldman, the game returned and Johnny Damon hit an RBI single off Clemens. Clemens was among several 2000 Yankees at the event that did not feature former captain Derek Jeter. Jeter delivered a taped video message after Mariano Rivera was the final player introduced. 'He was in spring training,' fellow pitcher Andy Pettitte said of Clemens. 'So it was good to see him in spring training and then of course here. A huge part of our 2000 team and it was good.' The only former player not introduced was current manager Aaron Boone, whose team entered Saturday with six losses in seven games. A seven-time Cy Young Award winner, Clemens went 354-184 with a 3.12 ERA and 4,672 strikeouts, third behind Nolan Ryan (5,714) and Randy Johnson (4,875). In two stints with the Yankees, Clemens was 83-42 with a 4.01 ERA and retired after the 2007 season. He was named in the Mitchell Report in December 2007 and has denied PED usage. In his final year on the BBWAA Hall of Fame ballot in 2022, Clemens received 257 votes (65.2%). Besides members of the 2000 team, Willie Randolph, Graig Nettles, Chris Chambliss, Ron Guidry, Bucky Dent and Mickey Rivers were introduced as members of the 1977 and 1978 World Series teams. The widows of five-time manager Billy Martin, captain Thurman Munson and Bobby Murcer were also introduced as part of an event that began in 1947 when Ty Cobb and Babe Ruth first appeared.
