Exact date this week Nationwide customers to find out if they'll get £100 bonus

Daily Mirror26-05-2025

The payment of £100 comes as the building society is owned by its customers and not shareholders. This means it can distribute some profits to them rather than paying dividends
Millions of Nationwide customers will soon find out whether they will receive a free £100 from the building society. Nationwide is set to announce whether it will reintroduce the Fairer Share payment scheme for the third year running.
The Fairer Payment scheme was first launched in 2023, and it rewards members for doing their everyday banking with Nationwide. The payment of £100 comes as it is owned by customers and not shareholders. This means it can distribute some profits to them rather than paying dividends.

Nationwide will be publishing its financial results this week on Thursday, May 29. In them, they will confirm whether the bonus will be paid again this year, the exact amount, when it will be paid and who will qualify for it.

Towards the end of last year, the building society's chief executive Debbie Crosbie said they were 'well positioned' to repeat a Fairer Share payment to qualifying customers. However, the building society stressed that it all depends on its financial performance. Customers should find out as early as 7am.
A spokesperson said: 'Nationwide's board will decide on a Fairer Share payment for 2025 and it will depend on our financial performance. The decision will be announced as part of our full year results 29 May.'
Last year, a total of £385million was paid out to 3.85 million customers after the building society announced profits of £2billion. The bonus payments were made between June 13 and June 28 - so it is likely customers would have to wait until June again to get the money, if another round is confirmed.
Nationwide has over 16million members overall, and as mentioned before, not everyone gets the money. Last year, only 24% of its customers received the payment. In 2023, 3.4million customers received the bonus.

Last year, the money was paid to eligible members who had a current account and at least £100 in a savings account or at least £100 outstanding on a mortgage as of 31 March 2024. Extra requirements were also in place depending on the type of current account or mortgage you held.
The announcement comes just weeks after Nationwide completed a separate £50 payment to around 12million customers between April 9 and May 14. The "Thank You" payment is separate to the £100 "Fairer Share" payment.
The "Big Nationwide Thank You" payment was issued as a gesture of gratitude to Nationwide members for their contribution to the takeover of Virgin Money. The £2.9billion deal was completed in October 2024. Overall £60million was paid out.
To be eligible for the £50 payment, you will need to have had a savings or current account, or mortgage, at the end of last September. You must also have made at least one transaction through your current account or savings, or had a balance of at least £100 in your current account, savings or mortgage, in the 12 months to the end of September 2024.

Nationwide is offering free cash to customers - how to make sure you get it

Brits could be missing out on hundreds of pounds of free cash, as one major UK bank offers a market-leading rate to its customers Nationwide customers are being given the chance to earn hundreds of pounds extra in free payments. The building society is offering a competitive 3.75% AER on its One-Year Triple Access Online Saver. While there may be better rates available, the Triple Access Saver rate remains a strong contender and could help savvy households earn some additional cash. If you were to deposit £10,000 into the account and leave it untouched, you would earn £375 at the end of the 12-month period, demonstrating that there's good money to be made. Not only existing Nationwide customers, but also those from other banks can switch and sign up. ‌ Under the terms of the account, savers can makeup to three withdrawals in a year without affecting the interest rate. However, making more than three withdrawals will cause the rate to drop to 1.25%, so it's worth considering this before opening the account. ‌ This comes after finance experts warned that millions of Brits are leaving their money in low-interest accounts, where it's hardly growing at all, reports Birmingham Live. Nationwide stated: "Online saving – limit your withdrawals, keep a better rate with our limited access savings account. Up to 3.75% AER/gross a year (variable) for 12 months. "You can makeup to three withdrawals during the 12-month term of this account. If you make more than three, the rate drops to 1.25% AER/gross a year (variable). "Designed for: savers who are happy to makeup to three withdrawals (during the 12-month term) without loss of interest. Savers who want to open and manage their account online using our internet bank/banking app."

Barclays issues important update for British spenders

The bank has issued an alert for debit and credit card holders in light of UK consumer confidence dipping A major high street bank has issued an important warning for anyone with a credit or debit card. Barclays has released a notice to all debit and credit card holders, highlighting a slowdown in spending in May. The bank, which competes with NatWest, Nationwide, Lloyds Bank, HSBC UK, TSB, and Santander, reported that consumer card spending rose by a mere 1.0 per cent year-on-year in May. ‌ This is a significant drop from the 4.5 per cent growth observed in April. The growth rate also falls short of the current CPIH inflation rate of 3.5 per cent, reports Birmingham Live. ‌ According to Barclays, consumers are "cutting back" due to dwindling confidence in their personal finances. The bank's research revealed a three-percentage-point decline in confidence in household finances, down to 67 per cent, and a four-percentage-point drop in the ability to spend on non-essential items, now standing at 56 per cent. Discretionary spending saw a modest 2.0 per cent increase, a notable decrease from the 5.1 per cent recorded in April, as nearly half (46 per cent) of UK adults expressed intentions to reduce their expenditures. Barclays' study also highlighted growing concerns in several areas, including 'shrinkflation' (up four percentage points to 82 per cent), 'streamflation', and interest rates (up three percentage points to 64 per cent). Karen Johnson, Head of Retail at Barclays, gave her thoughts as to why non-essential spending has dipped. ‌ "Consumers are clearly becoming more value-conscious as financial pressures persist, but they're still finding joy in the everyday - whether that's a small treat, a cinema trip, a garden project, or a carefully planned getaway," she said. The weather is not something Brits might consider when it comes to loosening the purse strings. ‌ But it turns out the elements play a role in our spending, and how much cash we part with at any given time. Scots enjoyed several scorchers for the majority of last month, with record-breaking sunshine and temperatures. However, despite no rain for the first 23 days of May, four weeks' worth of rain fell in just three days at the start of June, pushing it into wetter-than-average territory. ‌ "The double bank holidays in May and record sunshine will have given non-essential spending a helpful boost," Johnson noted. "But this was largely outweighed by the rainy weather in the second half of the month. "Meanwhile, longer-term uncertainty continues to shape how and where people choose to spend." The Barclays Consumer Spend report amalgamates hundreds of millions of customer transactions with consumer research to offer a comprehensive insight into UK spending. It comes as Barclays Bank is reducing its number of branches and has closed a significant number in the past few years. Branches throughout the UK, including Scotland, have disappeared, in light of changes in how people bank. Join the Daily Record WhatsApp community!
