
Concerts, F1 drive optimism in Singapore services sector despite transport, finance caution
DOS said the third-quarter 2025 survey, conducted from June to July, found that 17 per cent of firms were upbeat about business conditions, while 15 per cent anticipated a deterioration, resulting in a net weighted balance of two per cent of firms expecting a more favourable business outlook.
Within the sector, industries expressing positive business sentiment include accommodation, wholesale and retail trade, recreational, community and personal services, as well as information and communications.
'Hoteliers and retailers are optimistic due to upcoming concerts and sporting events, as well as the year-end festive season. These are expected to boost tourism and increase hotel occupancy rates, while driving sales growth for retailers,' according to a statement on the findings.
Meanwhile, industries such as transportation and storage, and finance and insurance expect more challenging business conditions in the second half of the year.
'Water transport firms are cautious about the geopolitical uncertainties and anticipate lower demand for their services due to front-loading activities by firms ahead of the expiration of the 90-day pause in the United States' reciprocal tariffs,' it noted.
The services sector, with a net weighted balance of seven per cent, foresees higher revenue for the third quarter, particularly in the accommodation industry, supported by major events such as the Singapore Grand Prix.
In line with the positive revenue outlook, firms in the accommodation industry also anticipate increased hiring to meet the expected rise in tourist arrivals for these upcoming events.
'The majority of the industries expect to increase hiring activity for the period July to September, with a net weighted balance of nine per cent,' the survey found.
The Business Expectations Survey covers around 1,500 enterprises across wholesale and retail trade, transportation and storage, accommodation, food and beverage services, information and communications, finance and insurance, real estate, professional, administrative and support services, as well as recreation, community and personal services.
Respondents are asked about their expectations of the business situation in the next six months, as well as operating revenue and employment in the next three months. — Bernama

LTA: No plans to liberalise Singapore-Malaysia cross-border ride-hail services
SINGAPORE: Singapore's Land Transport Authority (LTA) said it has no plans to fully liberalise Singapore-Malaysia cross-border point-to-point transport via ride-hail services. The agency said officials from Singapore and Malaysia met on Aug 1 to discuss cross-border service arrangements, but no decision was made on the issue of allowing cross-border e-hailing to ferry passengers. "We note recent Malaysian media reports suggesting that Singapore is looking to introduce cross-border on-demand ride services. "While we are open to ideas to improve the cross-border commuting experience, we would like to clarify that LTA has no plans to fully liberalise cross-border point-to-point transport via ride-hail services," LTA posted on Facebook, Sunday. LTA said there is currently an existing reciprocal Cross Border Taxi Scheme (CBTS) in place that allows a licensed fleet of up to 200 taxis from each side to ferry passengers between Singapore and Johor Baru. These cross-border taxis are permitted to pick up and drop off passengers only at a single designated point in the other's country – Larkin Sentral in Johor Baru for Singapore taxis, and Ban San Street Terminal in Singapore for Malaysian taxis. "We are also considering increasing the number of boarding and alighting points in each other's country, and to use ride-hailing apps to book cross-border trips on licensed taxis," it said, noting that the existing quota of the CBTS is not fully utilised. LTA said as CBTS is a reciprocal arrangement, any change would require agreement from both governments. Meanwhile, LTA said that during the meeting, the Malaysian authorities also requested for Singapore's cross-border buses to begin their operations from Johor Baru at 4am. The agency said it is assessing the request. A key consideration is that the first buses should match the starting time of local bus and MRT services when the commuters arrive in Singapore. LTA is also talking to cross-border bus operators on the possibility of bringing forward the bus start times slightly, as well as gauging the interest of private bus operators to operate earlier services at higher fares. – BERNAMA

MUMBAI, Aug 3 — US President Donald Trump on Thursday slapped a 25 per cent tariff on Indian goods after prolonged talks that got bogged down over access to India's labour-intensive agricultural sector, which New Delhi has pledged to protect. Why is India opposing the products the US is lobbying for? The United States is pressing India to open its markets to a wide range of American products, including dairy, poultry, corn, soybeans, rice, wheat, ethanol, fruits and nuts. While India is willing to provide greater access for US dry fruits and apples, it is holding back on corn, soybeans, wheat, and dairy products. A key reason for this resistance is that most US corn and soybeans are genetically modified (GM), and India does not permit the import of GM food crops. GM crops are widely perceived in India as harmful to human health and the environment, and several groups affiliated with Prime Minister Narendra Modi's ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) are opposing their introduction. The commercial cultivation of a high-yielding GM mustard variety that India developed itself is currently not allowed due to an ongoing legal battle. Like GM crops, dairy is also a highly sensitive issue, as it provides a livelihood for millions of farmers, including many who are landless or smallholders. The dairy industry helps sustain farmers even during erratic monsoon seasons, which can cause significant fluctuations in crop production. Sarawak aligns tourism development with RMK13 investment zones
KUCHING: The Sarawak government has expressed readiness to align its tourism development strategies with the newly announced tourism investment zones under the 13th Malaysia Plan (RMK13). Datuk Seri Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah, Sarawak's Minister of Tourism, Creative Industry, and Performing Arts, stated that while the state already possesses strong tourism offerings, further collaboration with federal initiatives will enhance mutual benefits. 'If the tourism investment zones include areas like Mulu, Niah, the Kuching Delta, and the Rainforest World Music Festival, then we are already aligned. We just need deeper discussions,' he said. He emphasised the importance of avoiding overlaps and instead strengthening ongoing and future efforts. Sarawak's tourism sector has shown promising growth this year, with visitor numbers nearing five million and revenue surpassing RM1 billion. Abdul Karim, who also oversees youth and entrepreneurial development, stressed that socioeconomic programs for bumiputera must align with Sarawak's existing ecosystem to ensure effective implementation. He welcomed RMK13's focus on expanding business opportunities through funding, training, and mentorship, noting that the state government has similar initiatives under the Post-COVID-19 Development Strategy (PCDS) 2030.
