Red Sox prospect Marcelo Mayer gets a ride to Fenway Park for his big league debut

BOSTON (AP) — Marcelo Mayer, Boston's No. 2 overall prospect, was promoted to the Red Sox and needed to get a ride to Fenway Park to start against the Baltimore Orioles on Saturday.
The reason he didn't drive himself: He lost his car keys 'like three weeks ago.'
Mayer was promoted from Triple-A Worcester when third baseman Alex Bregman was placed on the 10-day injured list with a significant right quad strain.
Mayer said a "clubby' drove him to Boston while he was answering text messages for the approximately 45-minute commute.
'I never cared to look for them until I needed to,' he said, smiling.
Mayer was in the starting lineup for the second game of a doubleheader against the Orioles, playing third base and batting sixth.
Drafted No. 4 overall in 2021, the 22-year-old Mayer made it to Fenway after the Red Sox beat Baltimore, 6-5, in the opener of the split doubleheader.
'It feels good. It's something I worked for my whole life,' Mayer said, standing in the middle of the clubhouse before the second game.
'He brought me in (the office) in the morning and told me I was scratched in the first game,' Mayer said of what Worcester manager Chad Tracy told him. 'Just to see what was going on (in Boston), then he brought me in a little later and said something of the lines of: 'You'll play the second game but not here, you're playing in Fenway.''
He then spent the time answering messages during his ride to Boston and didn't see the traffic.
'I used it as a reason to kind of chill and answer all my family and all my friends,' he said, before saying the first one he told was his dad.
'It was surreal,' he said. 'The emotions were still pretty high. It's something that me and my family have worked toward since I ever started playing the game. It was a moment I definitely wanted to share with them before I got out to the media.'

Kyle Teel gets a new shirt as he joins the Chicago White Sox for big league debut

CHICAGO (AP) — Kyle Teel has a new collared shirt and his own big league opportunity. Teel, one of the majors' top prospects, was brought up by the Chicago White Sox on Friday. The 23-year-old catcher was in the starting lineup for the opener of a weekend series against Kansas City, batting sixth. Teel was acquired in the Garrett Crochet trade with the Boston Red Sox in December. He batted .295 with eight homers and 30 RBIs in 50 games with Triple-A Charlotte. When Chase Meidroth, another prospect who was acquired by the White Sox in the Crochet deal, was brought up in April, Meirdroth told Teel he might need a collared shirt for his major league arrival, and Teel gave the infielder one of his own. So Charlotte manager Sergio Santos returned the favor when he broke the news to Teel that he was going to Chicago, handing over a new shirt. Teel was the No. 14 pick in the 2023 amateur draft out of the University of Virginia. His arrival marks a positive moment for a last-place White Sox team in the middle of a painful rebuilding process. Chicago also optioned catcher Korey Lee to Charlotte and designated right-hander Ryan Cusick for assignment. The 26-year-old Lee was sidelined by a sprained left ankle before he was activated by the White Sox on May 27. He is batting .250 (7 for 28) in 14 games with Chicago this season. ___ AP MLB:

DENVER (AP) — Colorado Avalanche forward Logan O'Connor is expected to be out at least five months after undergoing hip surgery on Friday. O'Connor had the procedure performed in New York City by Dr. Bryan Kelly. The 28-year-old O'Connor is coming off a year in which he had 10 goals and 11 assists in 80 regular-season games. In the playoffs, he scored twice in a first-round series loss to Dallas that extended to seven games. O'Connor also had hip surgery in March 2024. He signed a six-year extension with Colorado last September. Before turning professional, O'Connor played three seasons for the University of Denver. He was a member of the Pioneers team that won an NCAA championship in 2016-17. ___ AP NHL playoffs: and
