
ECRL extension to Thailand brings long-term benefits, says Loke
Loke said the proposal to extend the ECRL to Rantau Panjang would bring long-term benefits to residents and the country.
'To ensure this proposal provides the best long-term benefits for the country and stimulates the local border economy, it must connect to Thailand and not just end in Rantau Panjang,' Loke said during Question Time in Parliament on Tuesday (Aug 19).
He said his ministry met Thailand's deputy prime minister in Bangkok on May 2 and presented Malaysia's proposal for the rail extension.
Thailand responded positively and is currently seeking feedback from its Transport Ministry.
'At the same time, our Transport Ministry is preparing a Cross Border Transport memorandum of understanding (MoU) with Thailand to ensure cross-border rail can be realised,' Loke added.
Loke was responding to Ahmad Fadhli Shaari (Perikatan–Pasir Mas), who asked about the extension proposal.
He said a technical study has not been carried out and is necessary to determine flood risks along the ECRL lines in Rantau Panjang and the type of tracks used.
Loke explained that the ECRL uses a standard gauge (1.435 metres wide), while the State Railway of Thailand (SRT) uses a 1,000mm metre gauge.
'We must allow SRT trains beside ECRL tracks so cargo transfers can be made,' he said.
He added that several issues require detailed technical studies to determine feasibility.
Hassan Karim (PH–Pasir Gudang) asked if Malaysia will benefit from such a mega project, to which Loke agreed.
'There will be technology transfer and benefits to locals. These were among the terms discussed with China in 2018.
'One of our terms is that 40% of components must be manufactured by local contractors,' Loke said.
He added that Malaysia will cooperate with China to operate the high-speed railway when the ECRL is completed.
'We emphasised that Malaysian students should be exposed to the technology and should staff ECRL services,' he said.
Last month, Malaysia and Thailand agreed to revive the line between Pasir Mas and Sungai Golok under Keretapi Tanah Melayu Berhad (KTMB) to reconnect the railway networks.
The ECRL project is expected to be completed by the end of 2026.
Train services from Kota Baru to Gombak will start in January 2027, while the line from Gombak to Port Klang is expected to be completed a year later.

Vaithilingam has dedicated his life to public service. His contributions to the nation have now been immortalised in the biography, Vaithi – A Life of Service, written by veteran journalist A. Kathirasen. National Land Finance Cooperative Society managing director Datuk B. Sahadevan described the 91-year-old, fondly known as Vaithi, as someone who exemplifies Malaysia. 'I think that a lot of us tend to forget that we're Malaysians first before anything else. 'But when you see Datuk Vaithi, you see the perfect example of how to be a Malaysian.' The 32-chapter biography blends personal anecdotes with historical milestones from Vaithilingam's life. 'This book is largely based on Datuk Vaithi's memory, and I'm amazed by his ability to recall so many details from decades ago,' said Kathirasen during the launch of the book at Royal Lake Club in Kuala Lumpur. He explained that the language was kept plain to ensure accessibility to as many people as possible, especially young readers. 'Some chapters are in a question-and-answer format as if he was speaking directly to the reader rather than an intermediary, that is the writer,' he added. 'If I could capture the essence of this book from just one quote, it would be: The greatest purpose in life, the greatest achievement one could ever have in life, the greatest satisfaction one could ever get in life, can only be found in the service of others. 'The book really communicates Datuk Vaithi's priorities and purpose through action, thought and spirit,' he said. 'From leading the Malaysia Hindu Sangam to guiding the Malaysian Consultative Council of Buddhism, Christianity, Hinduism, Sikhism and Taoism, Datuk Vaithi's contributions remain much needed to this day. 'Especially his approach and voice of reason in interfaith matters,' Ong added. Vaithilingam also played a key role in the development of Malaysian athletics. His involvement in sports began from the time he was a young teacher, and he has since been inducted into the Olympic Council of Malaysia (OCM) Hall of Fame for his contributions. Reflecting on his work, Vaithilingam said that service has been the guiding principle of his life. 'All my life I have been working not as an Indian, Malay or Chinese, but as a Malaysian. 'Whatever I did, whether it was sports, social activities, religion or education, it has always been as a Malaysian and for Malaysians. Govt seeking control of local Chinese rolling stock arm in RM10.7b train deal

KUALA LUMPUR: The government plans to secure majority ownership in the Malaysian subsidiary of a Chinese rolling stock giant as part of a RM10.7 billion proposal to lease 62 passenger train sets for Keretapi Tanah Melayu Bhd. The Public Accounts Committee (PAC), in its latest report, revealed that the cabinet had approved the plan on Aug 14 last year. It entails acquiring a 51 per cent stake in CRRC Rolling Stock Center (Malaysia) Sdn Bhd (CRRC) through a local firm or government-linked company. However, Transport Ministry secretary-general Datuk Jana Santhiran Muniayan told the PAC on Feb 12 this year that negotiations with CRRC had yet to take place. CRRC, which operates an assembly plant in Batu Gajah, Perak, is currently 70 per cent owned by CRRC Zhuzhou Locomotive Co Ltd, with the remaining 30 per cent held by CRRC (Hong Kong) Co Ltd. The 30-year leasing plan covers 62 new passenger train sets from China, to be delivered by 2027, along with maintenance, repair and overhaul services. In the report released yesterday, PAC noted that the arrangement also requires local content, technology transfer and at least 40 per cent participation from the Malaysian workforce. The public-private partnership unit will spearhead the leasing model. Jana Santhiran had said that the government opted for direct negotiations with CRRC in the first phase due to the urgent need to speed up the acquisition process. However, the government intends to conduct an open tender for the second and third phases, in line with cabinet policy, he said. He explained that CRRC had previously met the supply requirements for electric multiple units, but delays still occurred, resulting in "Liquidated Ascertained Damages" being imposed, including for the Electric Train Service 3 project. He added that the leasing plan remained under study, and a letter of intent had not been issued to CRRC.

PSM deputy chairman arrested over Parliament protest
KUALA LUMPUR: Parti Sosialis Malaysia (PSM) deputy chairman S. Arutchelvan was arrested at 6pm today at the Dang Wangi police headquarters over a protest outside Parliament last week. PSM secretary-general M. Sivaranjani said Arutchelvan surrendered himself after being ordered to report to the police. "This arrest is unlawful and constitutes an abuse of police power," she told FTM. The protest on Wednesday involved more than 100 plantation workers from Perak, Negri Sembilan, Selangor, Kedah and Johor, who marched from Taman Tugu to Parliament to submit a memorandum and draft bill seeking to make it compulsory for estates to provide housing for local plantation workers. It was reported that police initially blocked the group from assembling outside the Parliament gates but later allowed them to hand the documents to Deputy Law and Institutional Reform Minister M. Kulasegaran and Opposition Chief Whip Datuk Seri Takiyuddin Hassan. A scuffle broke out at the gates, which Arutchelvan later said was a 'misunderstanding'. Kuala Lumpur police chief Datuk Fadil Marsus later said an investigation had been opened into a scuffle during the handover, which allegedly left a police officer injured. He said the case is being investigated under Section 353 of the Penal Code for using criminal force to deter a public servant from carrying out his duties, and Section 427 for mischief. Fadil had also referred to a video uploaded on TikTok showing participants of the gathering "provoking and forcefully breaching" police officers on duty at Jalan Parlimen. Police had summoned Arutchelvan the following day to record his statement. Arutchelvan was reported saying that he and several rally participants had a 'misunderstanding' outside the Parliament.
