150 arrested, mastermind identified in Assam's Dhubri communal disturbances

GUWAHATI: Over 150 people have been arrested and the alleged mastermind behind the throwing of cattle parts in front of a temple has been identified since shoot-at-sight orders at night were issued in Assam's Dhubri district, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said on Tuesday.
Sarma visited Dhubri for the second time in 10 days and reviewed the law and order situation following communal tension in the district after the Eid-ul-Zuha festival.
He said that the state government was also exploring the option of setting up a permanent base of the Indian Army to strengthen the security apparatus in this sensitive district.
Sarma said that over 150 "anti-socials", including 11 from outside the state who had cases pending against them, have been arrested since June 13.
"Our zero-tolerance approach along with apprehending 150 anti-social elements is working but we are not lowering our guard against communal forces," he said.
The mastermind involved in throwing body parts of a cow in front of the temple has also been identified, Sarma said.
"The mastermind has been identified as Mintu Ali. He is currently absconding and he should surrender soon," he added.

A senior official from the district administration said the land in question was located at Japariguri village in Biswanath, before adding that the drive has been proceeding peacefully, so far. The officer further said notices were served to the families on August 1 to vacate the areas within 15 days, which they have already done. Gogoi, CM engage in battle of words

Guwahati: War of words between Congress' Assam president Gaurav Gogoi and CM Himanta Biswa Sarma is gaining momentum ahead of the Bodoland Territorial Council (BTC) elections. Participating in an election rally at Koklabari, Gogoi said Congress wants to give scholarships to the children of the state, but Sarma wants to lift guns and patronise violence. Gogoi added that during the Congress regime, peace and harmony began in BTC through the Bodo Accord. However, to safeguard his chair, CM Sarma want unrest in BTC and violence across Assam. He urged people to remain alert against this conspiracy. He alleged that United Peoples' Party Liberal (UPPL) and Bodoland Peoples' Front (BPF) are silent now, unwilling to oppose because their remote controls are in Sarma's hands. "Himanta keeps three phones — one to call Amit Shah, another to call BPF leader Hagrama Mohilary, and the third in his back pocket to talk to UPPL chief Promod Boro. He keeps a secret phone so that if Congress forms govt after assembly polls, he can use it to approach Congress after dumping BJP to save himself," he added. Reacting to Gogoi, CM Sarma told the media that Gogoi is worried after seeing a sea of people at Sarma's meeting compared to a smaller gathering at Gogoi's meeting. "Nobody should take any learning from a person who praises Pakistan in Parliament," he added. Stay updated with the latest local news from your city on Times of India (TOI).
