Govt must urgently review energy risk scenarios due to Iran-Israel war: GTRI

Time of India8 hours ago

With the Israel-Iran conflict intensifying, the government must urgently review
energy risk scenarios
, diversify crude sourcing, and ensure strategic reserves are sufficient, think tank GTRI said on Sunday.
Due to the war, India is increasingly at risk of collateral economic fallout, with energy security, trade routes, and key commercial interests facing growing uncertainty, the Global Trade Research Initiative (GTRI) said.
"The escalating hostilities and rising regional tensions are posing direct threats to India's strategic and economic links with West Asia," GTRI Founder Ajay Srivastava said, adding India has significant trade exposure to both warring nations.

In 2024-25, India exported goods worth USD 1.24 billion to Iran and imported USD 441.9 million in return. Trade with Israel was even more substantial, with USD 2.15 billion in exports and USD 1.61 billion in imports.
"But more critical than these bilateral flows is India's reliance on the region for energy: nearly two-thirds of its crude oil and half of its LNG imports pass through the
Strait of Hormuz
, which Iran has now threatened to close," he said.
Live Events
This narrow waterway, only 21 miles wide at its narrowest point, handles nearly a fifth of
global oil trade
and is indispensable to India, which depends on imports for over 80 per cent of its energy needs.
He said that any closure or military disruption in the Strait of Hormuz would sharply increase oil prices, shipping costs, and insurance premiums, triggering inflation, pressuring the rupee, and complicating India's fiscal management.
The risks became even more immediate on June 15, when Iran fired missiles at Israel's Haifa port -- a facility handling over 30 per cent of Israeli imports and 70 per cent owned by India's
Adani Ports
, Srivastava said.
Initial reports indicate damage to port infrastructure and nearby refineries, raising fears of disrupted logistics and a spillover of conflict into Indian commercial operations, he said.
Meanwhile, Israel's June 14-15 strike on Houthi military leadership in Yemen has heightened tensions in the Red Sea region, where Houthi forces have already attacked commercial shipping.
"For India, this poses another serious risk. Nearly 30 per cent of India's westbound exports to Europe, North Africa, and the US East Coast travel through the Bab el-Mandeb Strait, now vulnerable to further disruption," he noted.
He said that if shipping must be rerouted around the Cape of Good Hope, transit times could rise by up to two weeks, and costs could soar.
This would directly impact Indian exports of engineering goods, textiles, and chemicals, while also raising input costs for key imports, he added.
"India, though not a party to the conflict, cannot afford complacency. The government must urgently review energy risk scenarios, diversify crude sourcing, and ensure strategic reserves are sufficient," he said.

Best pharma stocks to buy today, 16 June, as recommended by expert Raja Venkatraman

The Indian pharmaceutical sector is experiencing significant growth and transformation, moving beyond generic drugs towards innovation and globalisation. With a robust run seen in this space lately and the strong surge in pharma names in the last few weeks, we are covering some names that are holding some promise. Here are three stocks to trade as recommended by Raja Venkatraman for Monday, 16 June Buy MAXHEALTH (Current price ₹1232.80) Buy BIOCON (Current price ₹355.40) Buy STAR (Current price ₹882.45) Also Read: The capital goods sector gets a power-up, its weight rises in Nifty Outlook for Trading Most of the sectors ended the week in red with Realty, FMCG and PSU Banks leading the way down. The Bank Nifty has not been so strong after the breakout and has actually met with some selling, thereby keeping the pressure on the Nifty too. Fortunately, there has been good activity form the IT index and it is seen heading towards its highs, and this has contributed to some gains in the Nifty as IT majors are well weighted on the main index too. The gap left on the move down on 13 June continues to remain and that keeps a lid on the bullish flag. From the chart above we can see that the trends are down into some strong supports yet again. The dips into the previous supports at 24500 remain an important value support region that can now be considered as an inflexion point going into the coming days. Looking at the Open Interest data, the Put writing at 24500 continued to hold on with the PCR just below 1 highlighting that the bullish camp has more work to do. Markets continued to see uncertainty with no clear global or domestic cues. As a result, we are now in the dark of the outcome of the trends in the coming week. We are likely to witness a volatile scenario in the coming week. Also Read: Escalating Israel-Iran conflict to keep markets on boil in near term IT sector leads from the front as the strong showing midcap IT stocks have been faring better than the leaders. The strong move seen in majority of the IT stocks clearly suggests that the upward traction we can look for some continued upward traction in the coming days. The strong charge above resistance zones around 37500 has clearly signalled a new wave in this index. Until these zones are given up, this index and its component stocks will be in demand. Overall, markets are pointing to a bullish setup, and this can help fuel more upside in this index. Since no signs of a let-up in the trends, we can continue to look for every opportunity to initiate long position. Raja Venkatraman is the co-founder of NeoTrader. MFs accumulate capital goods, rate-cut beneficiaries in May

In May, as the Nifty 50 rose for the third consecutive month and profit booking by investors led to lower inflows into equity mutual fund schemes, fund managers churned portfolios with a bias towards largecap companies. With the long-term outlook for the power sector remaining robust, they used the opportunity to buy into the capital goods segment, which had seen a steep correction over the past six months, adding stocks like GE Vernova, BHEL , and Kirloskar Oil Engines . Agencies Expectations of rate cut transmission leading to higher demand for consumer and housing loans—benefiting the margins of NBFCs (Non-Banking Finance Companies) —prompted selective buying in NBFCs and HFCs (Housing Finance Companies) such as Bajaj Finserv , PNB Housing Finance , and Can Fin Homes . Takht Patna Sahib gives more days to Sukhbir, but asserts supremacy

Jalandhar: Takht Patna Sahib high priests have given 20 more days to Shiromani Akali Dal president Sukhbir Singh Badal to appear before them, following a request by Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee president Harjinder Singh Dhami. On May 21, the Patna Sahib clergy had declared Akal Takht acting jathedar Giani Kuldeep Singh Gargaj and Takht Damdama Sahib jathedar Tek Singh Dhanaula 'tankhaiya', and asked Sukhbir to appear before it. It also held that from now on, no directive from Akal Takht or from any other takht would be implemented at Takht Patna Sahib. The directive issued by the five granthis (priests) of Takht Patna Sahib on Saturday mentioned that on May 21, Sukhbir was asked to appear before the 'panj piaras' in 10 days and then a 10-day extension was given to him on June 1, but it ended on June 10. "Now, SGPC president Harjinder Singh Dhami called up to request more time. After discussions, the Panj Piare Singh Sahiban (five priests) decided to give Sukhbir Singh Badal another 20 days. In case of violation of this edict, strict action would be taken according to panthic tradition," said the directive. The signatories to the directive include Takht Patna Sahib jathedar and head granthi Baldev Singh and additional head granthi Gurdial Singh, who were barred by Akal Takht on May 21 from 'panthic services' on the grounds that an earlier directive by Akal Takht on Dec 6, 2022, about them was not complied with. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Memperdagangkan CFD Emas dengan salah satu spread terendah? IC Markets Mendaftar Undo Both high priests, along with three others, retaliated on the same day by declaring the jathedars of Akal Takht and Damdama Sahib 'tankhaiya' and summoned Sukhbir for "his interference and being a conspirator" in the whole affair. However, what can lead to even bigger and long-term ramifications is the part of their May 21 directive, which appears to challenge the supremacy of Akal Takht, clearly asserting that from now on, no directive from Akal Takht or from any other takht would be implemented at Takht Patna Sahib nor complied with. They emphasised that this part of the directive should be strictly complied with. This part of the directive is reminiscent of an edict issued on Jan 26, 2008, by the then Patna Sahib jathedar, Iqbal Singh, challenging the supremacy of Akal Takht (a concept widely accepted by Sikhs) and claiming that Takht Patna Sahib was supreme. Damdami Taksal chief Baba Harnam Singh Dhumma, while announcing opposition to acting Akal Takht jathedar Giani Kuldeep Singh Gargaj's address at Akal Takht on June 6 to mark an event to observe Operation Bluestar, cited the Takht Patna Sahib clergy's move to declare him 'tankhaiya'. Giani Baldev Singh and Gurdial Singh were invited and given prominence at the function held at the taksal's headquarters at Mehta Chowk on June 6. Both were made to stand alongside Darbar Sahib head granthi Giani Raghbir Singh when he addressed the congregation. Two others who were made to flank him included Darbar Sahib granthi Palwinderpal Singh, a former student of taksal, and a representative from Takht Hazur Sahib. Baldev Singh also addressed the congregation. The May 21 directive issued by Akal Takht also explicitly mentioned that Baldev Singh was not fit to render services at Takht Patna Sahib or in the panthic sphere. Both priests were asked to appear at Akal Takht and present their side. They were barred from rendering 'panthic services' until then. The Akal Takht directive also directed Takht Patna Sahib management committee to appear at Akal Takht and present its side. However, when the Takht Patna Sahib clergy hit back on May 21, it also 'directed' the management committee there to not appear before Akal Takht.
