Newcastle United and Man City star Given wasn't the only goalkeeper to make the list, with Pat Bonner also appearing in seventh place. While Roy Keane's nemesis, Mick McCarthy, found himself down at number 17, a long way away from his bête noire. A spokesperson for which commissioned the research, said: "Ireland's produced players the equal of any across the globe. 'Roy Keane is just one who would have graced the midfield of any side on the planet, across any era, while Paul McGrath is one of the most naturally gifted players ever to kick a ball. 'Of course, there were some incredible players from Northern Ireland as well – you might have heard of one named George Best.' The study went on to find 62 per cent believe some Irish players would have been World Cup winners - had they been born a different nationality. Other legendary players to be voted into the top 10 included Damien Duff (27 per cent) and Denis Irwin (26 per cent). Roy Keane and Mick McCarthy's 2002 World Cup bust-up was deemed the most memorable Irish footballing moment. While 48 per cent remembered with sadness Thierry Henry's blatant handball against the side in a World Cup playoff, preventing the Irish from qualifying. Inside Sunderland's major Stadium of Light revamp as Black Cats spend fortune making it Premier League worthy When it comes to individuals, 49 per cent said natural talent and technical skill is most important when deciding who is a true 'great'. While 45 per cent attribute it to work ethic and determination, and 25 per cent value loyalty - to club or country. More than nine in 10 (93 per cent) reckoned a truly great player can shine even in an average team, and 72 per cent said a player's trophy cabinet is not the best measure of greatness. Of current players, Evan Ferguson is deemed the player with the biggest potential to become a legend of the Irish men's game. He was followed closely by Caoimhín Kelleher, Nathan Collins and Michael Obafemi, according to the data. And as for the old guard, Jack Charlton was voted the manager to have had the single greatest impact on the Republic of Ireland men's national team. With Italia '90 the tournament most fans were proudest of their side, as Charlton guided his team to the last eight, narrowly losing to Italy in the quarter-finals. spokesperson added: 'When you look at the history of football, it's remarkable just how many players from the Republic of Ireland have gone on to have extraordinary careers on the biggest stages. 'For a relatively small nation, the contribution to the game has been nothing short of immense. "Irish footballers have long been known for their tenacity, heart, and work ethic - but what often gets overlooked is the sheer talent. 'From local pitches to European finals and World Cups, they've consistently shown they can go toe-to-toe with the very best.' THE 20 BEST ROI PLAYERS OF ALL TIME: 1. Roy Keane 2. Robbie Keane 3. Irish amateurs Stuart Grehan and Gavin Tiernan selected for 50th Walker Cup
Two Irish golfers have been selected for the Great Britain and Ireland team that will face off against the United States at the 50th Walker Cup in Cypress Point next month. The County Louth pair of Stuart Grehan and Gavin Tiernan have both been picked while fellow Louth man Caolan Rafferty will be first reserve for the biennial match in California. The top five players on the World Amateur Golf Ranking and five selections make up the squad. The team includes all nine players who won the St Andrews Trophy last month, including Luke Poulter, the son of Ian Poulter. Grehan followed up his Flogas Irish Men's Amateur Open Championship success from Seapoint earlier this summer, with the AIG Irish Men's Amateur Close Championship in Westport on Sunday. Tiernan has also had a phenomenal season with the highlight coming at Royal St George's when he m ade it all the way to the final of the 130th Amateur Championship before losing to American Ethan Fang. Tiernan had confounded expectations by surging to the final. The 19-year old was ranked outside the top 1000 male amateur golfers in the world at 1340th but he beat higher-ranked opponents to set up the final meeting with Fang. Their 36-hole battle was decided on the final green, under pressure Tiernan was left with a very long birdie putt which looked like it would drop but it agonisingly crept past the hole allowing Fang to take victory. Fang will be part of a formidable USA outfit as they look to secure their fifth consecutive victory in the match, following their 14.5 to 11.5 win last time out at St Andrews. The Great Britain and Ireland team are going in search of their first win in the match since 2015 and Golf Ireland high performance director, Neil Manchip, is excited to see the potential of this team. "Selection for the Walker Cup is a huge honour for any player, and I'm absolutely delighted for Stuart and Gavin. To represent Great Britain and Ireland at a venue as special as Cypress Point is something that will stay with them for the rest of their lives," said Manchip. "We had a very strong group of Irish players pushing for places again this year. Stuart's form over the summer has been superb and Gavin has shown his quality at the very highest level of amateur golf too. "Both have earned this opportunity and I know they will bring a lot to the team." This year's Walker Cup takes place between 6 and 7 September in Cypress Point. 2025 Great Britain and Ireland Walker Cup Team Cameron Adam, Scotland, Royal Burgess, 22 Eliot Baker, England, Tiverton, 22 Dominic Clemons, England, Gog Magog, 23 Charlie Forster, England, Basingstoke, 22 Connor Graham, Scotland, Blairgowrie, 18 Stuart Grehan, Ireland, County Louth, 32 Luke Poulter, England, Woburn, 21 Niall Shiels Donegan, Scotland, Meadow Club, 20 Gavin Tiernan, Ireland, County Louth, 19 Tyler Weaver, England, Bury St Edmunds, 20 Reserve Caolan Rafferty, Ireland, Dundalk, 32
