Astros could target young starting pitcher at trade deadline

Yahoo19-07-2025
The Houston Astros have been one of the best teams in Major League Baseball so far this season. At 56-41, holding a four-game lead over the Seattle Mariners in the American League West, the Astros may need to get aggressive at the trade deadline.
The Astros have dealt with numerous injuries to their pitching staff. Hayden Wesneski and Ronel Blanco are recovering from Tommy John, as is Cristain Javier. Luis Garcia and and J.P. France are also still recovering from long-term injuries.
As such, Bleacher Report's Joel Reuter has tagged Miami Marlins prodigy Edward Cabrera as a potential target for the Astros at the trade deadline.
'The Astros could use a quality No. 3 starter to slot behind Hunter Brown and Framber Valdez in the rotation,' Reuter wrote. 'With one of the thinner farm systems in baseball, a high-reward target like Cabrera could be at the top of their wish list.'
Cabrera is in the midst of arguably his strongest season in the Majors to date, pitching to a 3.61 ERA with 86 strikeouts in 82.1 innings. He has also had the makings of an ace pitcher, but has struggled mightily with command issues in the past. This season however, Cabrera currently boasts a career-low 3.3 BB/9, far below his career average of 4.7. Compare that with his 9.4 K/9 this season, and you have yourself a very strong pitcher with elite stuff.
The 27-year-old has looked closer to the version of himself that he was in 2022 when he pitched to a 3.01 ERA in 14 starts. Now healthy and more polished as a pitcher, now may be a good time for the Astros to pounce on the opportunity.
Brown and Valdez have held down the fort for the Astros so far this season, as both have pitched like potential AL Cy Young Award candidates. However, bringing in someone of Cabrera's stature to fill out the rotation could be enough to put the Astros over the top in the American League.

Perkins and Vaughn each homer, Brewers beat Braves 5-4 for 6th straight win

ATLANTA (AP) — Blake Perkins doubled, hit a homer and drove in two RBIs, Andrew Vaughn also homered and the Milwaukee Brewers beat the Atlanta Braves 5-4 on Wednesday night for their sixth straight win. Vaughn extended his hitting streak to a career-best 12 games and is batting .435 with five home runs and 16 RBIs in that span. Jose Quintana (9-4) allowed three runs on seven hits with seven strikeouts in six innings. Jared Koenig and Abner Uribe each threw a scoreless inning of relief. Trevor Megill earned his 26th save despite giving up a solo homer to Michael Harris II in the ninth. The Brewers (70-44) are 26 games above .500 for the first time since finishing the 2021 season 95-67. They set a franchise record for fewest games played (114) to reach 70 wins. The previous mark was 116 set in 2021. Sean Murphy and Eli White each had an RBI and Jurickson Profar hit a solo homer for Atlanta. Braves starter Spencer Strider (5-9) took the loss after giving up five runs on 11 hits over 4 2/3 innings. Key moment Isaac Collins singled, Christian Yelich doubled and Collins scored on a groundout in the fifth by Vaughn before Perkins hit a two-out homer to right field to make it 5-1 and chase Strider. Key stat Milwaukee is a Major League-best 33-24 and is 10-7-2 in series play on the road this season. The Brewers have won a season-high seven straight, 12 of 13 and 24 of 30 away from home. Up next The Braves have yet to announce their starter for Thursday against Miami's Eury Pérez (4-3, 2.70 ERA). Brandon Woodruff (3-0, 2.22) is set to take the mound for the Brewers against Kodai Senga (7-3, 2.31) and the New York Mets on Friday. ___ AP MLB:

Royals beat Red Sox 7-3, ending Boston's 7-game win streak

By JIMMY GOLEN AP Sports Writer Jonathan India hit a three-run homer and Michael Wacha scattered five hits over six innings to help the Kansas City Royals beat the Red Sox 7-3 on Wednesday night, ending Boston's seven-game winning streak. Wacha (6-9) allowed two runs while walking none and striking out three to earn his second consecutive victory and help the Royals avoid the three-game sweep. Boston led 2-0 after one inning but Kansas City took the lead in the fourth on Kyle Isbel's two-run single. India made it 6-2 in the seventh. Red Sox outfielder Roman Anthony was hitless in four at-bats just hours after signing a contract extension that will pay him at least $130 million through 2033. In the fifth inning, he hit a long fly ball that went 394 feet before right fielder Randal Grichuk caught it at the wall. The Royals had runners on first and second with one out in the sixth when pinch-hitter Randal Grichuk hit a ball to deep center field. Jarren Duran ran it down and caught it, threw it in and second baseman Ceddanne Rafaela took the relay and fired it to first to try to catch John Rave before he got back to the bag. The problem: No one was covering first. The runners advanced to second and third, but were stranded there. Boston starter Dustin May (6-8) made his Red Sox debut after being acquired at the trade deadline. He lasted 3 2/3 innings, allowing three runs on six hits and two walks while striking out four. The Royals are off on Thursday before a three-game series in Minnesota. Seth Lugo (8-5) will face Joe Ryan (10-5) in the opener. The Red Sox are off on Thursday before beginning a three-game series with the Padres in San Diego. The rotation will be Walker Buehler (6-6), Lucas Giolito (8-2) and Brayan Bello (8-5).
