German EV showdown: Bold new Mercedes GLC and BMW iX3 to debut in September

There's a German electric SUV showdown looming, and it starts at the IAA Mobility Summit in early September when the new BMW iX3 and Mercedes-Benz GLC with EQ Technology will be revealed to the world for the first time.
Not only will the two battery-powered midsize SUVs be direct competitors when they hit the market, but both will usher in new design and engineering eras for their respective carmakers.
The Mercedes GLC electric debuts a brand new design language for the firm's electric vehicles, with the softer lines of its current EQ models having faced criticism for their lack of imagination and identity.
To whet our appetites, Mercedes released a teaser image this week, showing the new upright, and more traditional-looking, 'grille' that will feature on its electric GLC.
The GLC with EQ Technology replaces the EQC and features a more traditional look.

As EVs do not require a grille for cooling, the GLC's centrepiece is purely aesthetic and features a chrome frame surrounding a smoked-glass-effect lattice structure and integrated contour lighting. An illuminated version will also be offered, featuring 942 backlit dots and animation sequences.
The battery-powered GLC with EQ Technology replaces the EQC SUV, with Mercedes moving to a more integrated naming convention for its models. While it shares a name with its combustion-engined GLC sibling, the electric model will feature a completely different platform, in the form of Merc's upcoming MB-EA dedicated electric vehicle architecture.
Technical details are still under wraps, but CarExpert reports that the new electric GLC is likely to offer a WLTP driving range of more than 800km, while the most powerful version could produce over 500kW.
BMW EV revolution loading
Either way, the GLC is going to face some stiff competition from its Bavarian rival, with BMW stating that the new iX3 will be one of the most significant model introductions in the company's entire history.
Ushering in the 'Neue Klasse' family of vehicles, it claims to make huge strides in EV technology as well as sustainability and connectivity.

The architecture incorporates a completely new battery system and drivetrain, all geared towards maximum efficiency and reduced weight.
BMW says the iX3 50 xDrive flagship will boast a WLTP range of up to 800km, and thanks to a 400kW maximum charging capability, owners will be able to add around 350km of range in just 10 minutes at a fast-charging station.
Furthermore, its Gen6 powertrain technology and BMW Dynamic Performance Control software stack aim to raise the dynamic potential of electric powertrains to a new level.
The iX3 also debuts the new BMW Panoramic iDrive cockpit interface, which displays all relevant driving information in the driver's ideal line of sight.

They often ask for upfront payments to guarantee returns, which serves as a major warning sign. These scams start on platforms like dating apps or through texts, then shift to social media, messaging apps like WhatsApp, and finally to payment or crypto platforms. 'This multi-platform approach is designed to evade detection by individual services, making comprehensive disruption more challenging.' Kojo Boakye, Meta's Vice President of Public Policy for Africa, the Middle East, and Türkiye, highlighted that combating scams is an ongoing challenge. He stated that they are continuously improving their security measures to stay one step ahead of malicious actors. "This is part of our unwavering commitment to protect our users, not just by banning malicious accounts, but by empowering individuals with the tools and knowledge they need to recognise and avoid these sophisticated threats. We believe that a safer messaging environment is built through a combination of robust technology, proactive detection, and user education," he said. The company also highlighted a recent example of cross-industry teamwork, where WhatsApp, Meta, and OpenAI worked together to dismantle a scam ring based in Cambodia. The group exploited ChatGPT to craft initial messages that guided victims to WhatsApp, before swiftly shifting them to Telegram. There, victims were instructed to like videos on TikTok and were ultimately pressured into depositing funds into cryptocurrency accounts. In light of emerging threats, WhatsApp is introducing new anti-scam tools alongside its efforts to dismantle scam operations. These features are specifically designed to defend users against common scam techniques: Group Messaging: A new safety overview will now appear when a user is added to an unfamiliar group by someone not in their contacts. This overview provides key group information and safety tips, allowing users to exit the group without viewing the chat. Notifications from such groups will be silenced until the user explicitly chooses to engage. Individual Messaging: WhatsApp is testing new approaches to caution users before they engage with unknown contacts. This includes providing additional context about the sender when initiating a chat with someone not in their contacts, enabling users to make informed decisions. Furthermore, WhatsApp encourages users to adopt a 'Pause, Question, Verify' approach when faced with suspicious messages. The strategy includes taking a moment to assess the sender's identity, questioning the legitimacy of the request, and verifying the information through alternate communication channels. Late last year, in 2024, the South African Social Security Agency (Sassa) issued a warning to the public about fraudulent WhatsApp messages circulating across the country. The Department of Social Development entity cautioned people to be vigilant against fake messages containing Sassa OTP codes sent through WhatsApp. Sassa clarified that it does not send OTP codes for the Covid-19 Social Relief of Distress Grant via WhatsApp, and they urged anyone receiving such messages to be wary, as these are likely scams. Merlog Foods calls for urgent electronic verification to streamline Brazil poultry imports

Image: File As South Africa prepares to resume poultry imports from Brazil, food importer Merlog Foods has raised concerns over potential delays at the border due to the continued reliance on paper-based veterinary certificates and has called on authorities to shift to a fully electronic verification system. The company is urging the Border Management Authority (BMA) to begin using Brazil's online veterinary portal to verify health certificates, warning that waiting for paper originals to arrive is causing week-long hold-ups and directly impacting food affordability. 'After months of disruption to poultry imports, we urge the Border Management Authority to align port inspection procedures with modern, technologically based practices,' said Merlog Foods manager Georg Southey in a statement on Wednesday. Next Stay Close ✕ South Africa recently lifted a ban on Brazilian poultry imports imposed earlier this year following a single case of Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza (HPAI) detected in one state in Brazil. Trade is set to resume from the week of August 18, with volumes expected to gradually increase over the next few months. While the Department of Agriculture and the BMA already have access to Brazil's secure online portal for verifying veterinary health certificates, the current protocol still requires that paper originals be physically shipped and received before the poultry can be released for sale. This process, according to Merlog Foods, delays distribution by seven to 10 days — even in cases where the shipment has been digitally pre-cleared. 'The continued requirement for original paper-based veterinary health certificates, despite their delayed issuance and delivery, creates a bottleneck in the supply chain,' said Southey. He noted that South African authorities had accepted the same digital system during the Covid-19 pandemic and urged them to formalise its use once again to reduce red tape and support food security. He added that delays are especially concerning given the country's ongoing battle with high food prices. Merlog Foods said that one of the main poultry imports from Brazil, mechanically deboned meat (MDM), is a vital raw material in the production of processed protein products such as polony and viennas, which are widely consumed by lower-income households and used in government school feeding schemes. 'MDM is a critical input for the manufacture of affordable processed protein products. Delays in releasing MDM into the market directly impact food affordability, with an estimated 100 million meals lost per week of delay,' Southey said. In addition to electronic verification, Merlog Foods has called on the Department of Agriculture to prioritise finalising a regionalisation protocol with Brazil. Such an agreement would allow South Africa to continue importing from unaffected provinces in the event of a future bird flu outbreak, instead of triggering a blanket nationwide ban. 'It is important that a regionalisation protocol with Brazil is concluded without delay,' said Southey. 'If another case of bird flu arises in the future and no agreement is in place, the entire country could once again face a blanket ban. This would force us to experience unnecessary disruptions again.' Responding to the concerns, Deputy Director-General for Agricultural Production, Biosecurity and Natural Resources Management, Dipepeneneng Serage, said the government's primary responsibility is to uphold biosecurity and food safety standards. 'These regulations are not contingent on the commercial interests of Merlog Foods, which is focused on the sale of poultry products and profitability,' Serage said. 'Therefore, we will not compromise biosecurity procedures, as both government and corporate interests align on the importance of food safety and biosecurity.' The company said it remained committed to working with the Department of Agriculture and the BMA to implement regulatory improvements that protect food safety while ensuring supply chain efficiency. 'South Africa cannot afford any more delays,' Southey said.

This comes after concerns were raised by industry experts about the potential for a fuel crisis due to the shutdown of local refineries and an ageing legislative framework that complicates the import and distribution of jet fuel. The CEO of the South African Petroleum Association, Avhapfani Tshifularo, recently said the country relies heavily on imported fuel, but legal and logistical problems are making it hard to supply efficiently. "Having them shut down it means the country has been reliant on the imported fuels, not only jet fuel, I mean, petrol and diesel. We import a lot of fuel into the country,". Tshifularo told Cape Talk. "So if you look at pre-COVID, like in 2019, we were importing anything between 20% and 30%. But right now, we are importing approximately 60% of our requirements". Next Stay Close ✕ In response, Johnstone Makubu, Deputy Commissioner at SARS, told CapeTalk that the revenue service is aware of the issue and is working with industry to ensure continuity of supply. "So about a year ago, we would have given those temporary licenses to industry operators to be able to import the fuel. That arrangement comes to an end around the end of October 2025, and we have been engaging to try and ensure that there is an extension to that arrangement," Makubu said. He said the Commissioner is currently applying his mind to the form and duration of that extension and expects to communicate a decision to the industry by the end of the week. Makubu also pointed out that the Customs and Excise Act, while promulgated in 1964, has undergone amendments over time. 'We don't foresee a shortage of fuel, we think South Africa needs to be certain that there will be no shortage, at least not as a result of uncertainty around the current temporary arrangement.'
