Rugby-French star Le Garrec apologises for diving incident
-France scrumhalf Nolann le Garrec has apologised after falling dramatically during a Top 14 match, an action widely criticised as simulation.
The Racing 92 player dropped to the ground clutching his face after a minor collision with Perpignan prop Bruce Devaux at the weekend, prompting jeers from home fans when replayed on the stadium's screen. Referee Kevin Bralley simply instructed Le Garrec to continue playing.
"I received a shoulder to the face and did not know if it was intentional," Le Garrec said in a statement to Midi Olympique. "After reviewing the images, I see this gesture was completely involuntary. I apologise to the match referees.
"I did not want to disrespect anyone. It is not how I behave."
Former referee Nigel Owens stated he would have shown Le Garrec a straight red card, while critics argued such exaggeration undermines concerns about genuine head injuries.
Le Garrec suggested the match context had played a part in his actions. Racing had just seen Fijian wing Vinaya Habosi sent off for head contact, and they were trailing Perpignan by 11 points with 10 minutes to play.
The Parisians ultimately went down 28-24 – a result that leaves them just four points above the relegation playoff zone with five rounds remaining.
The incident adds to rugby's growing simulation controversies this season, despite laws explicitly prohibiting actions that might deceive officials or contradict "the spirit of good sportsmanship".
In March, La Rochelle coach Ronan O'Gara likened Stade Francais flanker Romain Briatte to Brazilian footballer Neymar after Australian lock Will Skelton was sent off for a ruck clear-out.
Earlier in the year, Bath and England centre Ollie Lawrence admitted he "probably could have carried on" following a head clash with Northampton's Alex Mitchell — though he denied any attempt to deceive officials.

Ex-MD claims trial to misusing position over appointment of husband and funds transfer
KUALA LUMPUR: A former managing director of an oil and gas company claimed trial at the Sessions Court, here, today to a charge of misusing her position to appoint her husband to the firm. Farah Sabryna Nasarudin, 46, also pleaded not guilty to ordering the transfer of RM786,209.30 from the company to her bank account, for her benefit, and that of her Australian husband. She claimed trial after the charge was read out to her before judge Hamidah Mohamed Deril. According to the charge sheet, she had allegedly used her position as the managing director of Asiapac Oil & Gas Sdn Bhd to appoint her husband, Daniel Frederick Wall, as the company's technical adviser and had instructed the transfer of the funds. She had allegedly not obtained the agreement or ratification of the company's general meeting. The alleged offences occurred at the company based at Q Sentral in Jalan Sentral between Jan 27, 2021 and July 28, 2023. The charge under Section 218(1)(d) of the Companies Act, punishable under Section 218 (2) carries a jail term of up to five years or a maximum RM3 million fine or both upon conviction. Deputy public prosecutor Nur Shakila Shariff urged the court to set bail at RM30,000 and to order the accuse to surrender her passport to the court until disposal of the case. Defence lawyer A. Narainasami asked for a lower bail as the accused is supporting five school going children and an aged mother. Hamidah allowed bail of RM20,000 with one surety and set Sept 3 for mention.

United cruise over Bournemouth in Premier League US friendly
MANCHESTER United made it two wins out of two with a 4-1 victory over Bournemouth in the Premier League Summer Series pre-season tournament in Chicago on Wednesday. Goals from Rasmus Hojlund, Patrick Dorgu, Amad Diallo and teenager Ethan Williams sealed an encouraging result for Ruben Amorim's side at a rainy, windswept Soldier Field. United, who had opened their tour with a 2-1 victory over West Ham on Saturday, were always in control against the Cherries, taking the lead after just eight minutes through Hojlund. Dorgu curled in an inviting cross from the left flank and Denmark international team-mate Hojlund timed his run and jump to perfection to glance a header past Bournemouth goalkeeper Djordje Petrovic. Dorgu then doubled United's lead in the 25th minute, latching on to a clever, lofted quick free-kick from Mason Mount, muscling his way into the area and sliding a cool finish beneath the advancing Petrovic.
