Why ‘extreme day trips' are the new horrendous holiday trend

Reading the words 'extreme day trip' conjures, for me, the vision of an adrenaline-fuelled excursion somewhere in the UK. You know: skydiving in St Andrew's, say, or bungee-jumping in Bangor; coasteering in Cornwall or paragliding in the Peak District.
It turns out I'm woefully behind the times. The term refers to the latest heinous holiday concept – one that I'm convinced may be the single worst trend to ever grace the world of travel. The idea is simple, albeit horrifying: travellers fly to a destination, tick off a jam-packed list of activities, and fly back again, all within the space of a day.
It has gained traction on social media, where, for example, the hashtag #extremedaytrip has clocked up thousands of posts on TikTok. A Facebook group called Extreme Day Trips, meanwhile, has attracted more than 327,000 members ready to swap experiences for just how far a person can reasonably fling themselves in a 24-hour period. And then there's extremedaytrips.com, a site where community members share their one-day itineraries from the UK, including timings, tips, tricks and prices. Now, the practice has officially gone from fringe to mainstream: tour operator Tui has launched an extreme day trip to Lapland for its winter 2026 programme, departing from 11 UK airports.

The 'Search for Santa' itinerary is, for want of a better word, ambitious. Holidaymakers will be served a full English breakfast during the 3h 30m (approx) flight before arriving in Kittila, Finland, around midday. They'll grab snowsuits and boots, head to an 'ice village' to see the ice hotel and ice bar, hop on a sleigh ride pulled by reindeer, switch to a husky-led sled ride, go for a trip on a snowmobile, meet a Lapland local who'll impart stories and legends about the area, engage in some arts and crafts, take a journey through snowy woodland to meet Santa and his elves, and warm up with a hot juice by the campfire before returning to the airport. Oh, and on the plane home, they'll be served Christmas dinner.
I'm exhausted just writing it, let alone doing it; God knows when you're supposed to fit in going to the toilet. It's like they took all the elements that make up a brilliant, bucket-list adventure and condensed them down and down until what's left is the vacation equivalent of an undiluted Ribena. It is too strong, too intense – and no, it does not taste good. As an adult, the prospect is headache-inducingly overstimulating. The very notion of subjecting a child to all that in under 12 hours makes me want to lie in a darkened room.
Yes, each activity sounds fun in and of itself. But it won't be when suffocatingly stacked atop the others, like too many sardines squished into a single tin.
In fact, I'll 'fess up: I've even been on an 'extreme day trip' myself, many years ago, whizzing to Qatar and back in under 24 hours for work. Please believe me when I say it was one of the least pleasurable travel experiences of my life thus far.

And then there is, evidently, the climate factor in all this. We know by now that flying is far from green – taking just one long-haul flight accounts for more carbon emissions than individuals in many countries will be responsible for in an entire year. In 2023, aviation accounted for 2.5 per cent of global energy-related CO2 emissions, and the sector is only set to grow: the number of annual flights in Europe is expected to increase by 52 per cent in the next 25 years. Efforts to de-carbonise flights, meanwhile, are moving at a glacial pace – though perhaps that's a poor analogy, given the rapid speed at which glaciers are now melting due to global warming – with little sign of improvement. In fact, planemakers Boeing and Airbus both recently suspended the development of next generation, low emissions airliners – a fact that has further called the promise of 'net zero aviation', already exceedingly sketchy, into question.
I stopped flying at the tail-end of 2019 due to the climate crisis. While I don't expect everyone to follow suit, and nor can I swear I'll never get on a plane again, my research and experience over the past five years has taught me one key principle: if you are going to catch a flight, make it count. Taking fewer trips and staying for longer is the sustainable name of the game if we're considering people and planet when arranging our travel plans.
Travel with intention, take your time, explore more, spend more – you'll have a better experience personally, and your holiday will be of far greater net benefit to the destination you're visiting. Extreme day trips are the very antithesis of this: in and out, with few of your tourist pounds making it into the hands of locals. Meanwhile, that return flight to Swedish Lapland will have dumped 822kg of CO2 into the atmosphere, according to Atmosfair's carbon calculator – the equivalent of 205 round-trips from London to Paris via the Eurostar.
Look, I know we're time-poor – but having a rich experience doesn't come from trying to cram a week's worth of holiday into a single day. It means slowing down enough to appreciate every moment; luxuriating in the sights, sounds and smells; and, yes, leaving enough time in the schedule to occasionally go to the toilet.

A few travelers defended France, saying experiences outside Paris were far warmer, and some found Parisians delightful when they attempted even a little French. As one local pointed out: 'Paris is not France.' It's clear France and Russia came up the most, but it's worth remembering that every destination is nuanced. Attitudes can shift between cities, regions, or even just depending on how you approach people. One traveler summed it up perfectly: 'I've found no matter where I go, my reception matches the attitude I present.' A rower has said it is "absolutely incredible" to be back on land after returning from a world-record attempt across the Atlantic Ocean. Jack Jarvis, from Hamble in Hampshire, and his team, United We Conquer, made of rowers David Bruce, Sam Edwards and Adam Radcliffe, returned to Hampshire earlier, after a 3,500-mile (5,630 km) journey from New York. Their challenge has raised £100,000 for Head Up, a mental health charity for the UK armed forces community. Jarvis is hoping for confirmation the team has beaten the official record for distance rowed in 24 hours, which is currently 116.76 nautical miles (134.37 miles /216.24 km). He said: "After living off five hours sleep a day, rowing 12 hours, dehydrated, hungry, to be back on land, seeing all my friends and family is absolutely incredible." Jarvis already holds the world record for being the first person to row single-handed across the Atlantic from mainland Europe to mainland North America non-stop, which he achieved in 111 days, 12 hours and 22 minutes. The team aimed to break the 43-day world record for the North Atlantic route. He said the journey had posed some risks. "We had a capsize, we had an electrical fire, so pretty much everything that could go wrong, went wrong," Jarvis said. "But I have a strong team and we were able to finish, you know, we were able to finish what we started." The rowers were met by a crowd of supporters at Hamble, including Jarvis's mother, Debs Rolfe. He described it as a "real amazing turnout" and said "a massive thank you to my hometown Hamble and everyone that's come down from further afield". How to find the cheapest train tickets as passengers face 5.5% rise in rail fares

Campaigners have said a potential 5.5% rise in regulated fares is 'outrageous' - but there are some ways you can save money when buying tickets. Train fares in England could jump by 5.5% next year following an uptick in UK inflation, financial analysts have warned. July's Retail Prices Index (RPI) measure of inflation - which is often used to determine increases in the cost of train tickets - will be announced on Wednesday. While the government has not confirmed how it will determine the cap in regulated fare rises for 2026, this year's hike of 4.6% was one percentage point above the RPI rate in July last year. With this July's RPI figure expected to be 4.5%, according to banking group Investec, train fares in England could jump by 5.5%. Bruce Williamson, spokesman for transport pressure group Railfuture said "it would be outrageous" if fares rose by that much, adding that there is no justification in "jacking up fares above inflation". "It's ripping off the customer, driving people off the trains and onto our congested road network, which is in no-one's interest." Chief executive of lobby group Campaign for Better Transport, Ben Plowden, warned that rising fares are "putting people off rail travel", pointing to a survey that found 71% of people would be more likely to take the train if prices were lower. With passengers facing yet another rise in fares, here is a guide on how to save as much money as possible on your train tickets. Get a Railcard There are currently nine available Railcards, depending on your situation and needs, which can knock off 1/3 of your train fare. Most Railcards can be purchased online with the option to download as a digital Railcard to your smartphone or device with our Railcard App. Some one-year Railcards can also be purchased at any staffed National Rail ticket office. You can book your discounted train tickets online or in person, but you must be able to present your Railcard to inspectors during your journey for your ticket to be valid. 16-17 Saver: £35 for one year 16-25 Railcard: £35 for one year, £80 for three years 26-30 Railcard: £35 for one year Disabled Persons Railcard: £20 for one year, £54 for three years Family & Friends Railcard: £35 for one year, £80 for three years Network Railcard: £35 for one year Senior Railcard: £35 for one year, £80 for three years Two Together Railcard: £35 for one year Veterans Railcard: £35 for one year, £80 for three years Book in advance Train companies sell around a million advance tickets every week, according to National Rail. Tickets are usually released 12 weeks in advance, although this can vary, the rail industry body says, adding that the "earlier you book, the better the chance you have of getting the best price". Advance tickets are still available until the day of travel on many routes - sometimes up to 10 minutes before departure. While advance fares are single tickets valid only on the date and train shown on the ticket, they can be combined with other tickets to create an entire journey. Changes can be made before departure, but may be subject to a £10 admin fee and other terms and conditions. Buy a season ticket If you make the same journey more than once a week, it might be worth investing in a season ticket rather than buying tickets daily. An annual season ticket offers a full year's worth of travel for the price of 10 months and 12 days, Network Rail says. Part-time commuters may also want to consider Flexi season tickets, which give passengers day return travel for eight days within a 28-day period. Passengers don't need to choose their travel days in advance, providing plenty of flexibility for hybrid workers who only occasionally come into the office. Depending on your circumstances, you might save more money with either a weekly, monthly or annual season ticket. You can use National Rail's season ticket calculator here to see which ticket is right for you. Travel in a group If you're a small group travelling together, you can also use GroupSave on a variety of Off-Peak tickets across the rail network. GroupSave tickets save up to 1/3 on rail fares for adults travelling in a group of three to nine people. They can be bought for single or return journeys at off-peak or super-off peak times. Make sure you stick with the whole group you booked for to ensure your tickets remain valid during your journey. Travel during quieter times Off-Peak fares are cheaper tickets for travelling at less busy times during weekdays, and all day on weekends, National Rail says. You may have to travel at specified times, or on specified days or routes. On longer distance journeys, if you travel in a peak period one way but want to return when it is less busy, consider booking a combination of advance, off-peak and anytime fares to get the best deal. Rover and Ranger tickets Most train companies offer a selection of Rover tickets and Ranger tickets, which offer unlimited travel within a specified area and time period. Ranger tickets are valid for one day only, while Rover tickets are valid for longer (although still within a limited time period). For example, you could buy a Rover ticket that allows travel within a specific geographical area for three consecutive days, or within a 15-day period. These tickets may also include local bus travel, and there are often other offers and discounts available, including 50% off for children aged five to 15, 50% off for people with a 16-17 Saver Railcard and 1/3 off fares with other Railcards. How are train fares decided? About 45% of fares on Britain's railways are regulated by the Westminster, Scottish and Welsh governments, while the rest are set by train operators themselves. Regulated fares include season tickets on most commuter journeys, some off-peak return tickets on long-distance routes, and flexible tickets for travel around major cities. The Department for Transport (DfT) said there will be an update on changes to regulated fares later this year. Operators set rises in unregulated fares, although these are likely to be very close to regulated ticket increases because their decisions are heavily influenced by governments. A DfT spokesperson said: "The Transport Secretary has made clear her number one priority is getting the railways back to a place where people can rely on them. "The government is putting passengers at the heart of its plans for public ownership and Great British Railways, delivering the services they deserve and driving growth. "No decisions have been made on next year's rail fares but our aim is that prices balance affordability for both passengers and taxpayers."
