Bookies to donate all profits from Royal Ascot race to UK charities, BGC reveal

The Sun17-06-2025
A number of UK charities are set to benefit from one of Royal Ascot's most famous races this week, as bookmakers pledge to donate all profits from the Britannia Stakes to good causes.
The Betting and Gaming Council (BGC) announced that its members will give away every penny of profit from win and each-way bets on the race - held on Ladies' Day, Wednesday 19 June - to a range of UK charities.
2
This marks the sixth year in a row that the initiative has run, raising more than £3 million to date.
Charities set to receive funds this year include Prostate Cancer UK, Missing People, the SAS Regimental Association, Ascot Racecourse Supports, Racing to School, Greenhouse Sports and TempusNovo.
Bookmakers taking part include Flutter (Paddy Power, Betfair, Sky Bet), Entain (Ladbrokes, Coral), William Hill, Unibet, Betway, Virgin Bet, Star Sports, QuinnBet, the Tote and Bet with Ascot.
If the bookmakers don't make a profit on the race, they've agreed to donate a minimum of £200,000 to be shared between the chosen charities.
Since 2019, BGC members have raised over £6 million for charities supporting health, sport and the armed forces.
Betting and Gaming Council CEO Grainne Hurst, said: 'I'm absolutely delighted to announce that BGC members will once more be raising significant funds for a host of charities at the Britannia Stakes.
"The BGC and our members are incredibly proud to have raised millions for a host of cherished good causes over the last five years, and it's fantastic to partner with Royal Ascot once again to add to that tally.
"Millions of us enjoy a flutter, while Royal Ascot is the crown jewel in the sporting calendar, so it's fantastic to see Britain's bookies once again donating their profits from the Britannia Stakes. Whatever the result, charities are guaranteed to win big.'
Felicity Barnard, Chief Executive at Ascot Racecourse, said: 'We are delighted that members of the Betting and Gaming Council continue to support this hugely successful initiative.
"We are again thrilled that Ascot Racecourse Supports is a beneficiary – the monies raised are helping to support key community and equine legacy projects and we are hugely grateful.'

Man Utd told to make transfer move for ‘giant' after Arsenal defeat as Rooney and Neville pinpoint major weakness

MANCHESTER UNITED legends Gary Neville and Wayne Rooney have fired a warning to the club after their opening-day defeat. Both legends didn't hold back after Altay Bayindir's howler gifted Arsenal a 1-0 win at Old Trafford on Sunday. 7 7 7 The Turkish shot-stopper, surprisingly picked ahead of under-fire No. 1 Andre Onana, completely fluffed Declan Rice's corner, allowing Riccardo Calafiori to nod in from point-blank range. It was a tough pill to swallow after a much-improved display from Ruben Amorim 's side against the Gunners. Amorim tried to defend his stopper, insisting he was fouled when Arsenal stars attempted to block him in as the corner was taken. But Neville and Rooney were far from impressed with Bayindir's role in the goal - and told United to must act before the transfer window shuts. Neville named Emiliano Martinez and Gianluigi Donnarumma as the two shot-stoppers who could finally bring some authority to United's six-yard box. Martinez – the World Cup winner and Villa's no-nonsense No. 1 – was linked to Old Trafford earlier this summer, with a £40million price tag slapped on him by Villa Park chiefs. Meanwhile, Donnarumma – frozen out at PSG by Luis Enrique – is desperate for a new home and is keen on a Premier League switch. Speaking on his Sky Sports podcast, Neville fumed:'There's a glaring issue for Manchester United that can't be ignored. They need to find a goalkeeper. They have to.' Neville says the revolving door of keepers since Peter Schmeichel and Edwin van der Sar has made United look like a circus at the back. He added:'I'm absolutely unequivocal on that. I had an experience at United for 20 years, where we had big spells with [Peter] Schmeichel and [Edwin] van der Sar, and in between, we had seven or eight other goalkeepers. What did we learn about Man Utd in Arsenal defeat? MANCHESTER UNITED have splashed the cash this summer but that couldn't prevent an opening day home loss to Arsenal. Here are SunSport Manchester United reporter Martin Blackburn 's key takeaways from the narrow 1-0 defeat vs the Gunners. No 1 ISSUE UNITED have been linked with Gianluigi Donnarumma and David de Gea in recent weeks, and surely they will sign a keeper before the window shuts. Ruben Amorim has faith in Andre Onana — even if a lot of the fans do not — but he did not consider him ready to start here. The Cameroonian has missed the whole of pre-season with a hamstring injury. So Altay Bayindir, who has played throughout the build-up to the season, got the nod — and ended up costing his team the game. He should have been stronger under pressure from William Saliba and flapped a corner on to the head of Riccardo Calafiori. Bayindir has had problems with set-pieces before. Amorim and sporting director Jason Wilcox have two weeks to come up with a solution before the end of the transfer window. NO GOALS — AGAIN UNITED mustered just 44 goals in the Prem last season — and here they were starting with a blank again. The Red Devils have spent £200million sprucing up their forward line this summer, and there were encouraging signs from Bryan Mbeumo and Matheus Cunha. But new £74m centre-forward Benjamin Sesko stayed on the bench until the 65th minute. On a couple of occasions before then there were crosses into the box but nobody there to put them away. Amorim said on Friday he believes Sesko can be United's No 9 for many years to come — and that is why they spent so heavily on him. So it seemed a strange call to leave him on the bench for so long. Clearly the fans agreed as he was given a huge ovation when he arrived. A couple of late half-chances went begging but the Slovenian did enough to show he will be a threat. MIDFIELD STILL AN ISSUE UNITED have abandoned their bid to land Carlos Baleba at least until next summer because of Brighton's asking price. There is an interest in Sporting's Morten Hjulmand, while United are one of several clubs who admire Adam Wharton of Crystal Palace. But there is a chance they will not sign another outfield player, and fans will be worried about the options in midfield. Casemiro was excellent in Europe last season but did not have the same impact in Prem matches, while we are still waiting to see the best of Manuel Ugarte. United are going to be more exciting to watch this season — that is clear already — but will they still have a soft centre? "It's really unsettling when you don't have a really dominant No. 1. You need someone to own their six-yard box, to make a lot of saves, to come and punch everything, and save you points when your defenders make mistakes. "That needs to be sorted, either with a permanent signing or a loan. The two that you look at that have been mentioned in the last few weeks are Martinez and Donnarumma. "The reason I say those two would be good for United is not necessarily because they're the two best goalkeepers in Europe, but they've got big personalities and characters. It's really unsettling when you don't have a really dominant No. 1. Gary Neville "You've seen Donnarumma in a Euros final saving those penalties – he looked like a giant, and you've seen him play for PSG in huge games under pressure. "We've seen Martinez play in World Cup finals. They've played under extreme pressure, and they can handle it. "Man United need that, I think they need to sort the goalkeeper out because they will keep conceding goals and points, and it undermines what you're doing. "I've said it for years, you need personality, character, and stability in that position. I think United need to deal with it in the next couple of weeks.' Rooney, speaking on his own podcast, echoed the need to bring in Donnarumma. 7 7 7 He said: 'He (Donnarumma) is only 26, and he's one of the best goalkeepers in the world. "I go back to when we had Roy Carroll and Tim Howard in goal and I don't think there was 100% trust in them from the defenders. "Van der Sar comes in and calms everything down and the defenders trust him a bit more. "Onana has come in and he's a fantastic goalkeeper but he certainly didn't fill us with confidence last season. "Donnarumma is one of the best goalkeepers in the world and it would be crazy if Man United don't go for him.' Fulham this weekend, with The Sun exclusively told that the club is looking at bringing David de Gea back to the club. The Red Devils have been tipped off that the Spaniard, 34, has a clause in his deal at Fiorentina – allowing him to leave for a relatively small sum.

Aldi is selling Jellycat dupes for only £2.99, but they won't be down the Middle Aisle where you'd expect them

ALDI has brought back its popular Jellycat dupes but you'll have to look somewhere unexpected to find them. The range of four different Jellycat dupes are adorable and will have people running into Aldi to get their hands on them. 5 The Aldi range may be a fantastic alternate option than Jellycat products that's also more budget friendly. Jellycats on a Budget Prices for Jellycat animal, a popular plushie brand, start from £18 and can up to to £200, but you'll only need less than £3 for the Aldi version. The German retailer is selling sea life versions of the cuddly toys for £2.99 and they can be found in the pet aisle. Shoppers can get their hands on either an octopus, mantra, starfish or turtle. The scented toys are 24x12cm big and 11cm in thickness, they also feature a squeaker inside to keep your pooches entertained. Aldi's product listing reads: "Give them something to sniff, smell and wag their tails over with Scented Plush Dog Toy." But you need to hurry in to get your hands on the toy as they're only in store while stocks last. What are Jellycats? Jellycat is a brand known for its fun soft toys for babies and children. However, many adults also love the collections which include plushies based on food, seasonal items, animals and more. They've been making cute pieces since 1999 and add on their website: 'The name Jellycat was dreamt up by a child who loved jellies and cats and giggled at the thought of the two together.' When's the best time to shop at Aldi? WHEN it comes to shopping at Aldi, the best time to do so depends on what you want to buy. For reduced items - when shops open Red sticker items are rare at Aldi's 830 UK stores, but the supermarket says that none of its food goes to waste so there are some to be found - if you're quick. A spokesman for the supermarket said: "All items are reduced to 50 per cent of the recommend sales price before stores open on their best before or use by dates." That means you have the best chance of finding reduced food items if you go into stores as soon as it opens. Opening times vary by shop but a majority open from 7am or 8am. You can find your nearest store's times by using the supermarket's online shop finder tool. For Specialbuys - Thursdays and Sundays Specialbuys are Aldi's weekly collection of items that it doesn't normally sell, which can range from pizza ovens to power tools. New stock comes into stores every Thursday and Sunday, so naturally, these are the best days to visit for the best one-off special deals. For an even better chance of bagging the best items, head there for your local store's opening time. Remember: once they're gone, they're gone, so if there's something you really want, visit as early as possible Jellycat Crime There is such as a craze around Jellycats, that some people have even turned to crime to get their hands on some. There has been a major toy-snatching crime wave sweeping the UK - and fakes cropping up left right and centre. One woman was caught on CCTV stuffing a "significant amount" of the trendy plushies from St Peter's Garden Centre, Worcester, into her trousers and bags. The 38-year-old was busted helping herself to the incredibly popular soft toys from the shelves on June 7 this year. The next day she struck again at The Valley shopping centre in Evesham, where she pinched Jellycats worth £121. She later returned to the same shopping centre where she stole a further £170 worth of the toys. 5

Top executives' pay in UK hits record high – reaching 122 times of average worker

Executive pay at Britain's largest listed companies has soared to a new record high, with analysis revealing more FTSE 100 firms paid top bosses at least £10 million. Median chief executive officer pay reached £4.58 million in 2024-2025, a 6.8% increase on the previous year. This unprecedented level of remuneration was highlighted in the High Pay Centre's latest report. It marks the fourth year in a row that chief executives have taken home a record amount. It also means that the average FTSE 100 chief executive is now paid 122 times the median UK full-time worker, according to the research. There were 13 companies on the index of the UK's top 100 listed firms paying their chief executives £10 million or more – up from 10 last year. Among the highest-paid bosses in the UK is pharmaceutical giant AstraZeneca 's chief Pascal Soriot, who took home a pay packet worth £14.7 million in 2024. Peter Dilnot, chief executive of aerospace giant Melrose Industries, earned a bumper £45.5 million last year in pay and bonus awards. Pay deals worth £200 million for the company's directors were rejected by shareholders in April. Meanwhile, Rolls-Royce's Tufan Erginbilgic took a nearly £10 million reduction in his pay package in 2024, totalling £4.1 million thanks to fewer share awards. The High Pay Centre also found that, on a mean basis, pay for FTSE executives was £5.91 million in 2024-2025. This was a surge of 15.4% compared with the previous year, surpassing the previous record of £5.79 million set in 2017-2018. Nine companies had women chief executives for the entire financial year, with their median pay amounting to £3.27 million. The think tank said it was calling for 'excessive spending on top earners' by leading UK firms to be addressed through reforms to corporate pay-setting rules. This includes implementing the Government's Employment Rights Bill with measures ensuring trade unions have reasonable access to workplaces, and new rules requiring companies consistently to disclose the pay of their top earners.
