The family of slain Mangosuthu University of Technology (MUT) lecturer said they would carry the grief of his brutal murder for the rest of their lives. This is after the Durban High Court sentenced his killers to life imprisonment.
Engineering lecturer, Chanlall Dwarika, 61, was kidnapped on May 28, 2023, and his body was found in the bushes of Durban's infamous township, Inanda, on June 3, 2023.
On the day he was kidnapped, he had come to his investment property in Sea Cow Lake to conduct maintenance as the property was being renovated.
His killers, Thobani Mhlongo and Kwanele Makhaye, with whom he provided food, lived on this property.
The agreement was that they would look after the material for renovations, as it kept being stolen. The killers' co-accused, Siyabonga Freeman Mahaye, also lived on the property.
On the day of the kidnapping, CCTV footage from the area showed Dwarika speaking to three men, who then forced him into the rear of his Honda CR-V. The trio forced him to hand over his bank cards and ATM PINs. Several withdrawals were made.
At some point, Mahaye left his co-accused and took the bank cards. Mhlongo and Makhaye kept Dwarika at knife point, driving him to the Inanda bushes where they killed him. They disposed of his Honda by setting it alight before fleeing the scene.
When he failed to return home, his family reported him missing to the police. His pictures were circulated on social media, and MUT held a media briefing calling for his safe return. The post-mortem results revealed that his throat had been slit and partially decapitated.
Judge Khosi Hadebe described the trio as low lives and sentenced Makhaye and Mhlongo to life imprisonment each, 15 years each for robbery with aggravating circumstances, and five years each for the kidnapping. Mahaye was sentenced to five years' imprisonment for kidnapping and 15 years' imprisonment for the robbery.
Dwarika's daughter Ayuushi Dwarika-Rajbansi said they were happy with the life imprisonment imposed by the court.
'The sentences were fair and we are happy that the perpetrators got life sentences,' she added.
She said she did not know if the family would ever find closure because of how her father was killed, adding that justice was served.
'The perpetrators were caught and reprimanded for what they had done. Their actions did not go unpunished. There is closure in that aspect. However, the way my dad passed, I don't think we will ever get closure. It will be a pain that we will carry for life.'
She said they were happy with Sihle Mkhize's confession because without him, the police were not going to be able to crack her father's case. Mkhize was acquitted on Wednesday when the court handed down its judgment.
He was with the killers when they killed Dwarika, and he told the court that he went to tell his supervisor at work about what his friends forced him to witness.
When Mkhize told the court what happened, he said Dwarika begged for his life, and his co-accused killed him like a goat.
At one point, Judge Hadebe asked him if he needed to take a break as he would get emotional while leading his evidence.

Next Stay Close ✕ In the High Court, Darren, 36, is the first accused, and his older brother, Ferrel, 41, is the second accused. Ferrel is also facing 14 charges: murder, two counts of assault, two counts of assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm, five counts of crimen injuria, a data message that threatens violence, attempted murder, and two counts of unlawful possession of a firearm. According to the State, Ferrel was previously divorced, and at some stage in 2024, he got into a relationship with Varushka Maharaj. 'Maharaj was previously romantically involved with Byron Moodley,' the State said. On May 18, 2024, Ferrel called Moodley, swore at him, and threatened him with violence. Moodley ended the call, and when he later called Ferrel, he threatened his life. In June, while Moodley was at Cubana, he was confronted by Ferrel and a companion. They both assaulted Moodley by shoving and kicking him. On July 4, Moodley applied for a protection order against Ferrel; however, attempts to serve him with it were unsuccessful. 'On July 5, Ferrel communicated with Moodley via a messaging service and again threatened Moodley's life and swore at him. This continued on July 6 and 7,' the State alleges. Moreover, the State alleges that Ferrel was romantically involved with Salona Ramrutton/Kisten. Ramrutton/ Kisten was residing in one of Ferrel's houses at Kindlewood Estate, where Singh also resided. At some stage, Ferrel became aware that Ramrutton/Kisten had been involved in a sexual relationship with Singh. 'This resulted in a strain in their relationship, which resulted in verbal and physical abuse of her,' the State said. On December 21, 2024, the State alleges that Ferrel assaulted her, and she sought medical treatment. The following day, Ferrel requested Ramrutton/Kisten to visit him, and she obliged. He assaulted her, armed himself with an unlicensed firearm, and fired shots at her. 'Although she was not struck by the bullets, she was thereafter admitted into the hospital with serious injuries,' the State alleges. Additionally, the State alleges that Ferrel, who was enraged with Singh having an affair with Ramrutton/Kisten, conspired with Darren to kill him. The brothers will appear at the High Court on November 13.

Duduzile Zuma wears 'terrorist' T-shirt to court over looting tweets

Duduzile Zuma – the daughter of MK Party founder Jacob Zuma – has branded herself a 'modern day terrorist' during her Durban High Court appearance over her July unrest tweets. The MP has been charged with incitement to commit terrorism and public violence. Her trial will begin on 10 November. In a bold move, Duduzile Zuma wore a T-shirt with the slogan 'modern day terrorist' to the Durban High Court over her controversial July 2021 tweets. The daughter of former president Jacob Zuma has been charged with incitement to commit terrorism and two counts of incitement to commit public violence. The trial is scheduled to take place from 10- 21 November. Posting pictures of herself in court on her Instagram account, a beaming Duduzile thanked her supporters. She posted: 'At the end of the day, I'm a good woman, no matter what people say. 'I'm not perfect by any means, but my heart is pure, and I love hard with everything I have.' Her court appearance comes days after she rallied her supporters to take action against anyone who threatened KwaZulu-Natal Police Commissioner Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi. In 2021, Duduzile Zuma-Sambudla was accused of encouraging the July unrest, where properties and stores around the country were looted, vandalised, and torched. During the period, over 70 people are reported to have died in violent confrontations. Duduzile Zuma Sambudla has made headlines over her questionable social media posts. Her July unrest tweets from 2021 have landed her in hot water. Images via TikTok: @duduzumasambudla The daughter of the former president retweeted several videos of the violence, which was a direct reaction to her father's incarceration on contempt-of-court charges shortly before.
