Desi Rice Fair to showcase traditional varieties, promote awareness

Mysuru: A two-day Desi Rice Fair will be held in the city on Saturday and Sunday at the Nanjaraja Bahadur Chathra. To raise awareness among consumers and farmers about the diversity of desi rice, Sahaja Samrudha and the Save Our Rice Campaign are organising this rice fair.

At the Desi Rice Fair, varieties of red, black, golden, and aromatic rice will be on display and for sale. A special attraction this year is the availability of medicinal paddy and rice varieties.
Famous rice varieties from across India will be displayed. These rice varieties include Kala Namak from Uttar Pradesh, Kala Jeera from Odisha, Komal Chawal from Assam, Navara and Mullan Kayama from Kerala, Mapillai Samba from Tamil Nadu, Ambe Mohar from Maharashtra, Chitta Mutyalu from Andhra Pradesh, Govindobhog, and Kalo Bhat from West Bengal.
Karnataka's own rare varieties such as Karigajivili, Rajamudi, Dodyaga, Dodda Baira Nellu, Siddha Sanna, Salem Sanna, Rajabhoga, and Andanuru Sanna will also be displayed.
Over 200 traditional rice varieties will be showcased. High-quality seeds for the upcoming monsoon sowing season will be available. In addition, organic products, fruits, vegetables, native seeds, and value-added products will be on sale.
As part of the fair, a Desi Rice Cooking competition has been organised. Participants are invited to prepare any dish using traditional rice at home and bring it to the fair by 12.30pm on Aug 10.
A drawing competition titled "The World of Rice I Saw" will be held for two age groups: 5 to 10 years and 10 to 15 years. Children must draw at home and bring their artwork to the fair by 11.00am on Sunday, Aug 10.

Organic mango and jackfruit mela begins today

Hubballi: A two-day organic mango and jackfruit fair will be organised at Bhagini Mandali premises on Women's College Road, Hubballi, on Saturday and Sunday. Farmers from across Karnataka will showcase and sell diverse varieties of organic mangoes and jackfruit at the fair conducted by Sahaja Samrudha – Organic Farmers Collective and Rotary Club Hubballi, organisers said. "The fair will feature red, yellow and white varieties of jackfruit, with the special Red Chandrakala Jackfruit available for tasting and purchase. Visitors can also enjoy jackfruit-based delicacies such as chips, papad, halwa, kebabs, holige, vada, dosa, curries and biryani. Mango varieties such as Imam Pasand, Dasheri, Alphonso, Mallika, Benishan and Totapuri will also be on display and for sale. The event will also feature rural entrepreneurs, farmer companies, women's groups, and farmers showcasing value-added products made from jackfruit and mangoes, along with organic millets, seeds and handicrafts for sale. Heirloom seeds for the monsoon season will also be available. "Women from the Malali Women's Association will bring jackfruit, mango and other rare and high-quality saplings for sale," they added. On Sunday, a jackfruit-themed drawing competition for children will be held at 11am, followed by contests for adults, including jackfruit lifting and weight-guessing, at 1pm. Mysuru: The two-day annual jackfruit festival organised by Sahaja Samrudha will be held from May 3 at Nanjaraja Bahadur Choultry in the city. The festival will showcase the diversity of jackfruit and explore red, white, and yellow-fleshed jackfruits from across Karnataka, known for their unique taste and texture. It also features a jackfruit food bazaar, highlighting its culinary journey with innovative value-added products like jackfruit ice cream, jams, squashes, papads, halwa, kababs, holige, and dosa. Cooking demonstrations will also be held at the event to showcase the versatility of jackfruit in traditional and modern recipes. Twenty-five unique jackfruit varieties , including Rudrakshi Halasu, Siddu, Shankara, Tubagere Halasu, Vietnam Super Early, and Chandra Halasu—rare red jackfruits from Karnataka—will be on display, the organisers said. Over 50 groups will participate in the event, which will also feature organic produce, millets, pulses, and desi rice. Farmers from HD Kote, Periyapatna, Kollegal, Srirangapatna, Tiptur, Chikkanayakanahalli, and Haveri will bring their best jackfruit produce and value-added products. The festival will be inaugurated by Krishnamurthy Beligere, a poet and organic farmer. Shivanapura Ramesh, an organic farmer, will preside over the event. The chief guests include Dr Karunakaran, principal scientist and head of the Central Horticultural Experimental Station, Hirehalli, Tumkur, Manjunath Angadi, deputy director of the horticulture department, and Rangarajan TN from Amul Organic–Rich Plus.
