Bronnikov Stunned by Youthful Enthusiasm at Sheikh Imam's 30th Anniversary Celebration
Denis Bronnikov, the Deputy Director of the Russian Cultural Center in Cairo, expressed his amazement at the overwhelming turnout of youth at the celebration of Sheikh Imam, marking the 30th anniversary of his passing.
He noted that the crowd stretched for dozens of meters along Tahrir Street, extending all the way to the entrance of the Russian Cultural Center.
Bronnikov pointed out that most of the attendees were in their twenties. He added that the Tchaikovsky Theatre was fully packed, describing it as a phenomenon worthy of contemplation.
The celebration, organized by the Sheikh Imam Society for Arts and Literature in collaboration with the Russian Cultural Center in Cairo, saw a large turnout that included a number of renowned poets and artists.
The distinguished poet Zayn El-Abidin Fouad was present, along with other contemporary poets such as Mahmoud El-Taweel, Mohamed Seif, Farghali Mahran, and Sayed Enaba, who recited poems reflecting the rich poetic heritage of Sheikh Imam. Meanwhile, several individuals were honored for their contributions to preserving the legacy of Sheikh Imam.
As the evening unfolded, the connection between Sheikh Imam's music and political activism became even clearer. Bronnikov also highlighted that Sheikh Imam's songs reached beyond Egypt's borders, having been introduced to Russian audiences since 1985, when he performed at the World Youth Forum in Moscow.
The Russian Cultural Center has maintained this cultural exchange, showcasing the universal themes in Imam's music that resonate with youth all over the world.
Sherif Gad, a key figure at the event, reflected on the enduring impact of the late musician. 'Sheikh Imam is still alive in the hearts of Egyptians,' he said. 'He was the blind singer who illuminated the hearts of the poor and the revolutionaries. He sang for workers, farmers, and for Palestine, and his songs remain a guiding light for those fighting for justice.'
The celebration, which also included a poignant memorial for late poets such as Naguib Sorour and Ahmed Fouad Negm, reinforced the idea that Sheikh Imam's artistic and political influence continues to shape the cultural landscape of Egypt. It also highlighted the continued role of music in shaping social and political movements, especially among the youth.

Khaled El Nabawy to Participate in Ramadan 2026 Drama Marathon
Yara Sameh Famed Egyptian actor Khaled El Nabawy is preparing for a new TV series, which he plans to participate in during the Ramadan 2026 drama marathon. The series hails from director Youssr Taher and witnesses El Nabawy's comeback to the drama marathon after opting to skip this season. He made his last participation in the marathon with the 2024 TV adaptation of the 1972 film "Embratoreyet Meem" (Empire M). The 1972 film follows Mona (Faten Hamama), a widow raising her six kids besides her work. She gradually falls in love with businessman Ahmed (Ahmed Mazhar) but doesn't give in to her feelings easily being torn apart between her devotion to her children and her future with Ahmed. The film featured a cast that included Faten Hamama, Ahmed Mazhar, Hesham Selim, Dawlat Abyad, Ali Gawhar, Saif Abo El Naga, Nagyat Kandel, and others. Filmmaker Hussein Kamal directed the pic from a script by Ihsan Abd al-Qudus and Mustafa Samy. In the TV adaptation, it follows Mukhtar, who is left to care for his six children after losing his wife. He must navigate their changing needs and perspectives while also choosing between his children's lives and the person to whom his heart is attached. The drama also stars Hala Shiha, Nour El-Nabawy, Nashwa Moustafa, Mahmoud Hafez, Mohamed Mahmoud Abdulaziz, Rasha Mahdi, Eman Al Sayyed, Hagar ElSarrag, and more. The reimagining, consisting of 30 episodes, was directed by Mohamed Salama and written by Mohamed Suleiman Abdel Malek. Russian-Egyptian showdown marks World Chess Day at Russian House in Cairo
The Russian House in Cairo hosted a friendly chess tournament bringing together Egyptian and Russian players of all ages and skill levels to celebrate World Chess Day and promote cultural exchange through strategic play. The Chess Club at the Russian House in Cairo, under the supervision of Yustina Sabry, organized a special tournament that brought together chess enthusiasts of all ages — from budding young talents to seasoned professionals — on 27 July to celebrate World Chess Day. Before the tournament, Arsenii Matiushchenko, acting director of Russian Cultural Centres in Egypt, welcomed the participants with a speech highlighting chess as a universal game that unites people across cultures and generations. He emphasized that chess is not only an intellectually stimulating game but also plays a key role in developing essential personal skills. Attendees were also shown a signed board by Russian chess legend and former World Champion Anatoly Karpov, who autographed it during a previous visit to Cairo. The tournament followed the Swiss system, which allows each participant to play several matches against opponents of similar skill levels, ensuring a balanced and engaging competition. Chessboards across the venue witnessed intense strategic battles, where tactical thinking and a passion for victory were on full display. Among the competitors were both Egyptian and Russian players, including Matiushchenko himself and Anna Khlistova, a senior specialist at the Russian Federal Agency for International Cooperation. Matches were played in a friendly and respectful atmosphere, reflecting the spirit of cultural exchange. 1st Direct Flight from Moscow to Pyongyang Lands
Rana Atef The first direct flight from the Russian capital, Moscow, to North Korea's capital, Pyongyang, landed on Monday morning. According to Russia's Interfax news agency, the aircraft departed from Sheremetyevo International Airport in Moscow on Sunday evening, with the flight lasting approximately eight hours. The return flight from Pyongyang to Moscow is scheduled to depart on Tuesday morning. This development follows the Russian Federal Air Transport Agency's recent approval, granted earlier in July, for the Russian airline Nordwind to operate flights to North Korea.
