Decentralised solar plants of 1,190 MW capacity installed in Rajasthan in last one year

Mint20-07-2025
Jaipur, Jul 20 (PTI) About 1,190 MW capacity decentralised solar plants were installed in the last one year in Rajasthan under the PM-KUSUM scheme, an official statement said.
A total of 684 decentralised solar plants with a combined capacity of 1,305 MW have been set up in Rajasthan so far, of which 592 plants (1,190 MW) were installed in the past 12 months.
Unlike conventional large-scale solar parks, KUSUM scheme promotes small-capacity, grid-connected plants installed by farmers themselves or in partnership with developers on barren land. The plants are set up within 5 km of a grid substation and offer electricity at a significantly lower rate , ₹ 2.09-3 per unit” compared to thermal power.
As a result, the scheme is now being seen as a dual solution for clean energy and rural livelihood, with farmers turning into power producers while discoms benefit from low-cost, low-loss distribution, the statement said.
The scheme's implementation, previously handled by the Rajasthan Renewable Energy Corporation, has now been handed over to power discoms as per central guidelines.
Officials said that procedural bottlenecks were addressed by setting up dedicated officers, issuing SOPs, and facilitating land and loan-related issues to speed up installations.
Among the state's three discoms, Jodhpur leads with 997.5 MW, followed by Jaipur (169.22 MW) and Ajmer (137.33 MW). Nationally, Rajasthan ranks first in the KUSUM scheme's Component-A and third in Component-C, after Gujarat and Maharashtra.
The state government has said it aims to provide daytime electricity for agriculture to all farmers by 2027, with around 1 lakh already benefiting from the scheme.
Officials claim this could help reduce the state's discom losses, which are reportedly over ₹ 90,000 crore, mainly due to high-cost thermal power purchases.

India ramps up fertiliser production output, diversifies away from China

Mumbai: After China halted critical fertiliser supplies, the Indian manufacturers are increasing domestic output through advanced technologies and new formulations, according to a report on Monday. India's fertiliser industry is expected to grow at a CAGR of 4.2 per cent, reaching $16.58 billion by 2032. In FY25, total fertiliser production increased to 51 MT, supported by flagship schemes such as PM-KISAN and PM-Garib Kalyan Yojana, CareEdge Ratings said in its report. After restrictions on rare earth elements, China halted its speciality fertilisers and key phosphate exports to India. In response to this, India has secured a five-year agreement with Saudi Arabia to import 3.1 million tonnes of Di-ammonium phosphate (DAP) annually, which is equivalent to approximately 30 per cent of its domestic requirement. 'This crisis presents a unique opportunity. With China pausing fertiliser supplies, Indian manufacturers are stepping up to bridge the gap by increasing domestic output, which will not only benefit them but also drive innovation, particularly through the adoption of advanced technologies and the development of new formulations," said Priti Agarwal, Senior Director at CareEdge Ratings. "Policymakers, manufacturers, and farmers are collaborating to combat the issue with a combination of alternative sourcing, local production, and on-the-ground innovation,' she added. China accounted for nearly 70 per cent of India's speciality fertiliser imports during the June to December period in recent years. Now, India is signalling a decisive shift towards supply diversification and enhanced resilience by exploring alternatives like Saudi Arabia, Israel, Jordan, Russia, Oman, Morocco. Chinese di-ammonium phosphate (DAP) supply to India began to decline in 2023, then dropped from 2.29 MT in FY24 to 0.84 MT in FY25, and there have been no shipments since early 2025. Inspection clearances for DAP and speciality fertiliser shipments to India have been withheld since April 2025, blocking supplies while exports to other nations continue. "Ensuring adequate inventory and timely distribution — through coordinated efforts between the government and private stakeholders should be the near-term focus. The recent agreement with Saudi Arabia for long-term DAP supply is a timely step in this direction,' said Sachin Mathur, Associate Director at CareEdge Ratings.

Google officials depose before ED in online betting linked PMLA case

New Delhi, Jul 28 (PTI) Representatives of Google on Monday deposed before the Enforcement Directorate (ED) as part of a money laundering probe linked to the promotion of 'illegal" online betting and gambling platforms, official sources said. Executives from Meta did not depose, they said. The ED had called the officials of the two tech giants, first on July 21 and later extended their deposition to July 28 as they sought more time to appear. The agency may also record the statement of a designated 'compliance officer" of Google under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA) apart from obtaining some documents from the company on Monday, the sources said. A Google spokesperson had last week told PTI in a statement that the company was 'committed to keeping our platforms safe and secure, prohibiting the promotion of illegal gambling ads." 'We are extending our full support and cooperation to investigating agencies to hold bad actors responsible and keep users safe," the spokesperson had said. There was no response from Meta, formerly known as Facebook. The federal agency is probing several platforms hosting illegal betting and gambling links, including alleged instances of advertisements placed for them on various social media outlets and app stores. The tech giants are understood to have been called by the ED to know how such illegal platforms place ads on their portals. The ED has claimed that illegal online betting and gambling platforms cheated people of their hard-earned money, and also laundered and evaded taxes to the tune of several crores of rupees. Google also said its 'continuous AI advancements, complemented by human expertise, ensure all ads on our surfaces comply with local laws and our strict ad policies, and protect users from evolving threats." 'Last year alone, we removed 247.4 million ads and suspended 2.9 million advertiser accounts in India," the firm had said. The ED is investigating more than a dozen cases linked to illegal gambling and betting platforms across the country, including the Mahadev Online Book (MOB) app, whose main promoters hail from Chhattisgarh. Kinetic re-enters two-wheeler space; drives in Kinetic DX in electric avatar

New Delhi, Jul 28 (PTI) Kinetic Engineering on Monday announced its re-entry into the two-wheeler space and said it aims to invest around Rs 177 crore over the next 18 months to scale up sales network and ramp up production. The Pune-based firm, which used to produce and sell the iconic scooter Kinetic DX from 1984 till 1998, aspires to be among the leaders in the electric two-wheeler space over the next three years. The company on Monday launched Kinetic DX scooter in an electric avatar with an estimated range of 116 km on a single charge. In an interaction with PTI, Kinetic Engineering Vice Chairman and Managing Director Ajinkya Firodia said the company aims to scale up the production and sales network in a phased manner. 'We aim to touch 1.5 lakh unit sales mark in the next 3-4 years, and to sell that number we would require around 300 dealerships," Firodia said. The company plans to produce around 40,000 units by August 2026 and then gradually scale up production, he added. 'The company aims to achieve a 6-8 per cent market share in the next three years, targeting the top three players in the segment," Firodia said. He noted that the top five or six manufacturers are now dominating the domestic electric two-wheeler segment with a market share of around 90 per cent. When asked about the sales network, he said that the company currently has appointed 20 dealers and plans to expand the number to 160 in the first year. It would be scaled up to 300 dealerships over the next three years, with the western region being the first focus area, followed by northern, eastern and southern parts of the country, Firodia said. He emphasised the importance of having a reliable brand with good service is crucial for long-term success in the Indian market. The company also plans to later export the electric scooter to various markets globally, he added. Kinetic Engineering Ltd (KEL) is entering the electric space through a wholly-owned subsidiary — Kinetic Watts and Volts Ltd. It was established in September 2022. Kinetic Watts and Volts has already been capitalised with Rs 72 crore through KEL and the promoters. The promoters have recently pledged an additional Rs 177 crore in KEL, with a significant portion dedicated to scaling up the DX platform. The Kinetic DX is priced at Rs 1,11,499 and the Kinetic DX+ is priced at Rs 1,17,499 (ex-showroom, Pune). The electric scooter, which comes with various connected features, can go up to 90 km/hr. 'Reviving this icon was about more than just launching a scooter, it was about bringing back the reliability, innovation, and robustness that defined Kinetic for decades, giving it a future-ready soul," Firodia said. He noted that the company has been able to design a motor that functions without rare earth magnets, addressing current supply chain issues.
