Google officials depose before ED in online betting linked PMLA case
Executives from Meta did not depose, they said.
The ED had called the officials of the two tech giants, first on July 21 and later extended their deposition to July 28 as they sought more time to appear.
The agency may also record the statement of a designated 'compliance officer" of Google under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA) apart from obtaining some documents from the company on Monday, the sources said.
A Google spokesperson had last week told PTI in a statement that the company was 'committed to keeping our platforms safe and secure, prohibiting the promotion of illegal gambling ads." 'We are extending our full support and cooperation to investigating agencies to hold bad actors responsible and keep users safe," the spokesperson had said.
There was no response from Meta, formerly known as Facebook.
The federal agency is probing several platforms hosting illegal betting and gambling links, including alleged instances of advertisements placed for them on various social media outlets and app stores.
The tech giants are understood to have been called by the ED to know how such illegal platforms place ads on their portals.
The ED has claimed that illegal online betting and gambling platforms cheated people of their hard-earned money, and also laundered and evaded taxes to the tune of several crores of rupees.
Google also said its 'continuous AI advancements, complemented by human expertise, ensure all ads on our surfaces comply with local laws and our strict ad policies, and protect users from evolving threats." 'Last year alone, we removed 247.4 million ads and suspended 2.9 million advertiser accounts in India," the firm had said.
The ED is investigating more than a dozen cases linked to illegal gambling and betting platforms across the country, including the Mahadev Online Book (MOB) app, whose main promoters hail from Chhattisgarh. PTI NES PRS RHL

Google to invest $6 billion in southern India data centre
By Sudarshan Varadhan SINGAPORE: Google will invest $6 billion to develop a 1-gigawatt data centre and its power infrastructure in the southern Indian state of Andhra Pradesh in the Alphabet unit's first such investment in India, government sources said on Wednesday. Due to be built in the port city of Visakhapatnam, the data centre investment includes $2 billion in renewable energy capacity that will be used to power the facility, two Andhra Pradesh government sources with direct knowledge of the matter told Reuters. The search giant's data centre will be the largest in capacity and investment size in Asia and is part a multi-billion-dollar expansion of its data centre portfolio across the region in countries including Singapore, Malaysia and Thailand. In April, Alphabet said it was still committed to spending some $75 billion this year to build data centre capacity despite the economic uncertainty resulting from U.S. President Donald Trump's global tariff offensive. Alphabet did not immediately respond to Reuters' request for comment. Andhra Pradesh's information technology minister Nara Lokesh, who is in Singapore to discuss investments with thegovernment and business leaders there, did not comment on the Google investment. "We've made certain announcements like Sify, which are public," he said, referring to a 550-MW data centre Sify Technologies plans to build in the state. "There are certain announcements which are not yet public. In October, we will make those announcements." STATE'S POST-SPLIT INVESTMENT DRIVE Andhra Pradesh, a state run by a leading ally of India's Prime Minister Narendra Modi, was split into two in 2014, losing its former capital Hyderabad and a major revenue source to the newly created Telangana state. Andhra Pradesh has since been looking to attract investments to ease the financial strains of high debt and social spending. Lokesh said Andhra Pradesh has already been able to finalise investments in data centres with total capacity of 1.6 GW, adding that it aims to build 6 GW of data centres over the next five years from nearly zero currently. He expects the initial 1.6 GW of already agreed data centres to be operational in the next 24 months. That would be more than the 1.4 GW currently in operation in the entire country, according to real estate consultancy Anarock. "We're also working on getting three cable landing stations in Visakhapatnam. We want to create enough of cable network, which will be two times what Mumbai has today," Lokesh said. Cable landing stations - typically located close to data centres requiring fast and reliable connections to global networks - are used to store equipment which receives and relays data from undersea cables. Lokesh also said the state was looking to build up energy infrastructure to meet sustainability requirements of data centres. He said he anticipated power generation capacity requirements of as much as 10 GW from the electricity-intensive industry over the next five years. "Majority will end up being actually green energy, and that's the unique value proposition that we bring to the table," he said. Some of the additional capacity will be coal-fired, however, as data centres require reliable, high volume power throughout the day, he added.

ED moves for restitution of attached properties of bank officials accused in Rs 560 crore fraud
Over 5 lakh depositors of Karnala Nagari Sahakari Bank, who lost their money due to the bank management's alleged Rs 560 crore fraud, are likely to soon get back their money as the Enforcement Directorate (ED) has restituted immovable properties worth Rs 386 crore to the competent authority for distribution of money among the depositors. The ED on Wednesday shared information on the restitution of the immoval properties to the competent authority. The central agency had provisionally attached assets under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA) as the erstwhile chairman (of the bank) Vivekanand Shankar Patil, a three-term MLA from Panvel constituency from the Peasants and Workers Party of India, in connivance with other officials of the bank, siphoned off bank funds for private investments. The ED's money laundering case is based on the predicate offence registered by Panvel police in February, 2020, against Patil and 75 others. The accused persons involved the bank's vice chairman, CEO and 12 directors. In June 2021, the central agency arrested Patil in the case. It was alleged by the investigators that the chairman and other officials of the bank entered into criminal conspiracy and prepared 63 bogus loan accounts using forged documents without following the guidelines of RBI and standard banking norms and siphoned off Rs 560 crore for personal gains. When the ED carried out an investigation for money laundering, they found that the proceeds generated from the crime of forgery and cheating were diverted to various entities controlled by Patil and his relatives. 'He purchased various properties and assets using the funds siphoned off from Karnala Nagari Sahakari Bank Ltd. Such proceeds of crime (POC) were utilized for purchase of immovable properties at different locations in Raigad district,' the ED said in a statement. During their investigation, the ED identified and attached these properties worth Rs 386 crore in August 2021 and October 2023. The central agency has also filed a prosecution complaint (equivalent to chargesheet) on August 12, 2021, and the trial is underway. In the meantime, the liquidator appointed by RBI approached PMLA court for permission for restitution of properties. On July 22, the court passed an order to release the property at Karnala Sports Academy, Panvel, to the liquidator and put it for auction. The court also ordered the competent authority, MPID, to realise the land at Posari, Raigad by auction for distribution amongst the depositors, said the ED.

A shocking incident has come to light after being captured on CCTV, in which a car allegedly driven by Assamese actor Nandini Kashyap hit a two-wheeler, resulting in the death of a 21-year-old man. The incident happened at Dakkhingaon area in Assam's Guwahati in the early hours of Friday. Nandini was reportedly detained on Tuesday after the youth, Samiul Haque, passed away while undergoing treatment. Her arrest was officially recorded on Wednesday, following which Nandini was produced in court. According to news agency PTI, CCTV footage of the accident showed that not only was she speeding at the time, but did not even stop to check on the victim. Eyewitnesses claimed that she fled the scene immediately. She was, however, chased down and confronted by Samiul Haque's friends. Renowned for her lead role as Surabhi in director Roopak Gogoi's recent box office hit Rudra, Nandini Kashyap is also a prominent figure on social media, with over 52.5K followers on Instagram. According to her Facebook handle, she has been working in the film industry since 2018 as an actor, anchor, model and dancer. Belonging to Guwahati itself, she also goes by the name Nikita. After completing her basic education at Faculty Higher Secondary School, Amingaon, in her native place of Guwahati, she pursued a bachelor's degree at the University of Science & Technology, Meghalaya, located at Khanapara. She graduated from the university in 2021. Since 2018, she has been in the public domain and has appeared in a few music videos. However, it was in 2022 that she made her film debut, playing the lead role in the Assamese movie Janaknandini, helmed by her mother Kunjalta Gogoi Das. Also starring Gunjan Bhardwaj, Nrityacharjya Jatin Goswami, Arun Nath, Madhurima Choudhary, Ranjeev Lal Baruah and Rupam Baruh, Janaknandini was produced by Nandinee's parents, director Kunjalata Gogoi Das and husband Rinku Das, themselves. Earlier this year, Nandini Kashyap's career took off as Rudra emerged as a box office success. Although Nandini is currently in police custody, it is reported that this is not her first involvement in a vehicular offence, the difference this time being that it tragically resulted in the loss of a life. 'Kashyap's vehicle was penalised several times for speeding and many challans were issued in different districts,' Guwahati Police Deputy Commissioner (Traffic) Jayanta Sarathi Borah told PTI.
