
Mediacorp's Bloomr.SG MCN Accelerator launches its fifth edition
This year, the programme is expanding its mission to broaden its scope, introducing new tracks aimed at equipping creators with future-ready skills to navigate the emerging trends and challenges in the digital space.
The expanded curriculum features the use of AI-powered tools to support creators in ideation and help them better engage with their audiences.
Some partners on board are Dear AI, Creativesatwork, as well as educational institutions such as Lasalle College of the Arts and Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts. Bloomr.SG will also be continuing their long-term partnership with YouTube.
There will also be basic and advanced training modules on content creation, including content strategy, channel optimisation, talent development, production and policy guidelines. Participants will have the opportunity to join the Bloomr.SG Creator Network and take part in other Bloomr.SG Creator programmes.
To date, the programme has seen over 300 content creators graduate, many of whom have completed monetisable capstone projects for clients and Mediacorp brands. Notable graduates include Wah!Banana, Celine Leong, Elizabeth Boon, Eshton Chua and Double Up Media Pte Ltd.

80% of Singaporeans confident that they can identify deepfakes but only 25% actually could: CSA
Photo: Depositphotos/fizkes(for illustration purposes only) SINGAPORE: Although most Singaporeans were confident in their ability to detect deepfake content, three in four still struggle to tell real videos from manipulated ones, according to a new survey released by the Cyber Security Agency of Singapore (CSA). The findings, published in CSA's latest cybersecurity awareness survey, revealed that while nearly 80% of respondents said they were confident they could identify deepfakes, only one in four participants could do so correctly when put to the test. CSA polled over 1,000 residents aged 15 and above as part of the survey. About 63% of respondents said they have heard of deepfakes, and more than a quarter said they had encountered scams involving deepfakes but the results indicate that awareness does not necessarily translate into skill. The survey also highlighted challenges in detecting phishing attacks. Although two-thirds of respondents (66%) were able to identify all phishing attempts—an improvement from 38% in 2022—just 13% managed to correctly distinguish between all phishing and legitimate content, down from 24% two years ago. This decline may be partly due to more sophisticated tactics by cybercriminals, experts suggest. Over the past year, some respondents reported clicking on pop-up advertisements and malicious links that led to the installation of harmful third-party apps. Despite the difficulties in recognising deceptive content, the study offered some encouraging news. The adoption of cybersecurity measures, such as enabling two-factor authentication and installing protective software, has risen across age groups. Older users, above the age of 45, were the most proactive in following such measures. CSA plans to launch a new national cybersecurity awareness campaign in September, focusing on reinforcing good habits, including frequent software updates and the use of two-factor authentication, while also raising awareness about the dangers of deepfakes and online scams.

'Even $400/month would be enough': Singaporean with medical condition seeks remote job guidance

The whole world saw this happen during the COVID-19 pandemic, although in the years that followed, people have gone back to the office. Additionally, some countries are more friendly toward working remotely than others. A local Reddit user, whose health condition makes regular in-person work challenging, wondered about this in a recent post. ' I know it's a dumb question, but if you had a phone and internet, is it possible to get a remote job in Singapore?' asked u/DreamsOfBlueberries on r/askSingapore on Thursday (Jul 3). The post author explained that they had a 'pretty severe medical condition' that not only affected them both mentally and socially but also caused them to be 'stuck at home for years.' At present, they are undergoing treatment, but they added that this situation is difficult for their mother, who is the family's sole breadwinner. In a comment, they wrote that even earning S$400 monthly would be enough. 'I wanna do what I can to help, but my pain knows no routine right now, so it'll get in the way of a regular job with schedules. Sometimes, the pain keeps me up late at night, but I've been thinking of using this to my advantage. I don't have any prior work experience, so I have had little luck,' they wrote. The post author added that they've looked into call center, data entry, and telemarketing jobs and have even seen crypto platform sites that promise 'crazy profits,' but they don't have the money to invest in them. They are also considering international remote jobs as a last resort. However, they are aware they could get scammed since the verification process isn't as rigorous as it is in Singapore. 'I really just want a job and to be a normal human being. Not being able to contribute to my family is killing me inside and causing me crazy depression,' the post author added. Many commenters on the post wrote suggestions to u/DreamsOfBlueberries, with the one that brought up being a Shopee Collection Point getting the most upvotes. 'In your case, I would consider being a Shopee collection point. That is, you do not mind having people ringing your doorbell for parcel collection anytime during the day and a little bit of social interaction. You'll need to be open on at least one weekend as well. Being a collection point only requires an app on your phone to scan the parcels. You will have to handle storing them and sorting them for easy access. You get paid S$0.30 per parcel. It's not a lot, but somewhere to start,' the commenter wrote, adding that affiliate marketing might be another possibility later on. 'Talk to WSG career counselors via MyCareerFuture. It does work, and they are normally able to place somewhere. Keep expectations low, and you might need a computer,' suggested another. 'If you are aiming for a remote job, then IMO learning programming is the way to go,' one wrote, while another chimed in to suggest, 'Survey platforms. You need to hustle hard to make about S$50 to S$100 a month, though.' 'Maybe you can try doing a transcription job. You don't really need experience in transcription, as the job is about you receiving a recording and typing out the words. The salary is not fixed per hour, like S$10/hr, but rather, is based on the duration of the recording itself. You will be given a deadline to submit. ‘I've been quiet fired from my job, what should I do?': Singaporean worker asks after being put on no-pay leave

In a post on Thursday (July 3), u/ Educational_Dress692 wrote that they genuinely enjoy working at the ad agency where they're employed, but the company hasn't been doing well, and people have been let go. The post author hasn't been officially let go, but they've 'essentially been quiet-fired.' 'I have been asked to take on multiple roles from other coworkers who have been let go, and now I've been asked to go on an indefinite no-pay leave. 'I haven't officially resigned, but it feels like they're trying to avoid paying severance or making things official while pushing me out the door,' they wrote. 'If you aren't retrenched, then I am guessing the company still wants to retain you but needs to get past cash flow issues. Look for a job in the meantime,' a Reddit user advised. However, a commenter working in the same industry had this advice to give: 'Hi. Ad person here, so I can give a perspective on industry norms here in SG (esp for the MNC [multinational corporation] networks like WPP). 'Severance is not required by law. 'You need to have a direct and open conversation with your manager and HR and do what is best for you, if that means terminating your contract so you can seek other employment or modifying it then so be it, but they can't expect you to wait around on no pay till they're ready, chances are, they will never be,' another suggested.
