Kashmir rail link a step towards bridging 'Dil ki doori and Delhi ki doori': Farooq Abdullah
Speaking to reporters while travelling on the Vande Bharat train from Srinagar to Katra, Abdullah said, 'The train connectivity to Kashmir will not only increase tourism but also boost trade. Our fruits can now easily reach markets in Kanyakumari, Mumbai, Kolkata, Patna and beyond.'
On June 6, Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the Kashmir rail link and flagged off the Vande Bharat train from Katra to Srinagar, marking a milestone in the integration of the region with the national railway network.
In response to questions about the political implications, Abdullah stated, 'It is the first step, and more steps are needed to reduce 'Dil Ki Doori and Delhi Ki Doori'.'
On the issue of statehood, the NC president reiterated, 'Jammu and Kashmir will get its statehood back, and that will further reduce the emotional and political distance from Delhi.'

NC, PDP flay Centre's stand on L-G's powers to nominate 5 MLAs to J&K Legislative Assembly
Several Jammu and Kashmir parties, including the ruling National Conference (NC) and the opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), on Monday (August 11, 2025) flayed the Centre's stand on powers of the Lieutenant Governor (L-G) to nominate five MLAs to the Jammu and Kashmir Legislative Assembly without the elected government's 'aid and advice'. 'When Jammu and Kashmir has an elected government with an absolute majority, bypassing it to let the L-G handpick members is not governance, it is contempt for the people's mandate. It strikes at the heart of parliamentary democracy, ignores the constitutional spirit of 'aid and advice', and sets a dangerous precedent where unelected appointees can rewrite the people's verdict,' ruling NC leader and MLA Tanvir Sadiq said. Former Chief Minister and PDP president Mehbooba Mufti also expressed her dismay over the Centre's stand. 'The Government of India's decision to nominate five MLAs in Jammu and Kashmir after holding elections is a blatant subversion of democratic principles. Nowhere else in the country does the Centre handpick legislators to override the public mandate. In India's only Muslim-majority region, long marred by conflict, this move feels less like governance and more like control,' Ms. Mufti said. Following the 'illegal bifurcation' of the erstwhile State of Jammu and Kashmir, skewed delimitation and discriminatory seat reservations, this nomination was yet another body blow to the idea of democracy in Jammu and Kashmir. 'Representation must be earned through the people's vote not granted by a Central decree,' she added. Appeal to CM Ms. Mufti urged Chief Minister Omar Abdullah to put up a fight. 'This cannot be allowed to become the norm. Hope Mr. Abdullah's government rises to the occasion by challenging this undemocratic precedent because silence now would be complicity later,' Ms. Mufti said. CPI(M) leader and Kulgam MLA M.Y. Tarigami too questioned the Home Ministry's justification for empowering the L-G. 'It is a clear attempt to undermine the electoral democratic process in the region. This move is yet another step in eroding democratic norms. The L-G himself is an unelected nominee of the government and giving him the authority to nominate members to the Assembly runs contrary to the very spirit of representative democracy,' Mr. Tarigami said. He said earlier the Centre conducted delimitation exercise in Jammu and Kashmir that 'amounted to gerrymandering'. 'No established norms were followed during delimitation. Kashmir, despite having a larger population, was given only one additional seat, while the other region got six seats. This arbitrary process compromised the fairness of our electoral system,' he said. Mr. Tarigami said the provision for nominating members, 'especially by an unelected L-G, will 'further worsen the situation'. 'Nomination itself is contrary to the principle of an electoral democratic process, and in the present context, it openly indicates designs to weaken democratic representation in Jammu and Kashmir,' Mr. Tarigami said. According to amended Section 15 of the Jammu and Kashmir Reorganisation Act, 2019, the L-G has powers to nominate five members — two women, two Kashmiri Pandits and one Pakistan-occupied Jammu and Kashmir resident — to the Assembly. Most parties opposed the move and alleged that in case of a hung Assembly, the five MLAs may tilt the balance and the ruling party in the Centre will benefit from it. The L-G powers were contested before the High Court. The Hindu on August 10 reported that the Union Ministry of Home Affairs had submitted its position and supported the L-G's powers to nominate five members to the Jammu and Kashmir Legislative Assembly without the government's 'aid and advice'. The Ministry said the nominations were 'outside the realm of the business of the elected government of Jammu and Kashmir'.

"Hope PM Modi Restores J&K Statehood On August 15": J&K Deputy Chief Minister
Jammu: Jammu and Kashmir Deputy Chief Minister Surinder Choudhary on Sunday expressed hope that Prime Minister Narendra Modi would announce restoration of full statehood to the Union Territory from the ramparts of Red Fort in his address to the nation on Independence Day. Addressing a public meeting organised by the National Conference at Tali Morh Bari near here, Mr Choudhary recalled the events of August 5, 2019 and alleged the downgrading of a full-fledged state into two Union territories — J&K and Ladakh — was done arbitrarily. 'The people of Jammu and Kashmir have never accepted the 2019 decision. The promise made by the prime minister and home minister (Amit Shah) that statehood will be restored at an appropriate time must now be fulfilled.' "It is the most appropriate time to restore statehood to Jammu and Kashmir by pushing a bill regarding the same in current (Monsoon) session of parliament," the deputy chief minister said. "Hopefully, the PM shall announce restoration of statehood to J&K on August 15 during his speech to the nation from the ramparts of Red Fort," he said. Mr Choudhary also highlighted the achievements of the Omar Abdullah-led government like free travel for women in government-run buses, enhancement of marriage assistance from Rs 50,000 to Rs 75,000 for Antyodaya Anna Yojana (AAY) families, 200 units of free electricity for AAY households, and increase in pension for senior citizens, widows and physically challenged. National Conference provincial president Rattan Lal Gupta emphasized that the 2024 assembly elections have sent a clear message that the massive mandate given by the people in favour of the party is a rejection of the 2019 move to downgrade the erstwhile state into UT. He said the democratic mandate must be respected. Reaffirming the ruling party's commitment to equitable development, he said the National Conference has intensified its mass contact programme across Jammu region. 'We are reaching out to the people to listen to their grievances, ensure timely redressal, and make them aware of the achievements of the Omar Abdullah-led government over the past 10 months,' Mr Gupta said. He said the party firmly stands with the aspirations of people and will continue to advocate restoration of full statehood and the rights of the citizens of J&K.

India emerges as top smartphone supplier to US; electronics manufacturing stands at ₹12 lakh cr: Vaishnaw
Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw on Sunday said India has become the top supplier of smartphones to the United States, with electronics manufacturing now worth ₹12 lakh crore. Highlighting the government's vision, Vaishnaw, addressing the inauguration ceremony of Metro projects in Bengaluru today, said that India's electronic production has grown six times in the last 11 Railway Minister further pointed out the exponential rise in electronic exports, which have increased eightfold to reach 3 lakh crore rupees. Vaishnaw also noted India's position as the world's second-largest manufacturer of mobile phones, underscoring the country's expanding role in the global electronics market. This growth reflects India's focus on becoming a global hub for technology production, making advanced electronics more widely available and supporting the Prime Minister's goal of inclusive access to technology for all citizens, Vaishnaw said. "Our electronic production has grown 6 times in the last 11 years. Today, electronics manufacturing has touched 12 lakh crore rupees. Electronic exports have increased by 8 times... Today, it has grown to 3 lakh crore rupees. India has become the second-largest manufacturer of mobile phones in the world" he said According to official government data, India has made significant progress in mobile and electronics manufacturing, becoming the world's 2nd largest mobile manufacturing country. In 2014, India had only 2 mobile manufacturing units, but fast forward to today, the nation boasts over 300 manufacturing units, underscoring a significant expansion in this vital sector. In 2014-15 only 26% of the mobile phones which were being sold in India were made in India, the rest were being imported. It is worth mentioning that today, 99.2% of all mobile phones which are sold in India are made in India. The manufacturing value of mobile phones has surged from ₹18,900 crore in FY14 to a staggering ₹4,22,000 crore in FY24. Meanwhile, Prime Minister Narendra Modi earlier today flagged off three Vande Bharat Trains - Ajni(Nagpur)-Pune Vande Bharat, KSR Bengaluru-Belgavi Vande Bharat and the Shree Mata Vaishnodevi Katra-Amritsar from KSR Bengaluru Railway station. With these additions, the total number of Vande Bharat trains in the country will rise to 150 (75 pairs), Vaishnaw posted on X.
