Campaigners call for stronger fox hunting laws in city protest
John Petrie, senior campaigns manager with the League Against Cruel Sports, said: 'Fox hunting has been illegal for 20 years and yet this blood sport is still going on across Wales despite the ban. Foxes are still being chased and killed and havoc is being inflicted on rural communities by the hunts.
'The public, shocked by the sight of a hunter in red coat and blood-spattered fox, came up to us to voice their support for stronger fox hunting laws and an end to fox hunting for good.'
More than three quarters of the Welsh public supported strengthening a Hunting Act, according to a poll commissioned by the league and carried out by FindOutNow with further analysis by Electoral Calculus.
Mr Petrie said: 'It's time to properly strengthen the Hunting Act and end all hunting with hounds and we urge the Welsh public to pledge to take part in the forthcoming government consultation and demand an end to hunting wildlife with dogs.
'This is a pivotal moment for animal welfare and together we can see fox hunting finally banned for good in both Wales and England.'

Gardener wrongly accused of school bomb threat after mix-up over Welsh accent
A Welsh gardener was misunderstood as making a bomb threat to a school because of his accent. James Morgan had phoned Badbury Park Primary school in Swindon, Wiltshire, to ask if he had time to pick up litter at a nearby park before the children finished classes for the day. He was looking to clean up the public space before 3pm, as he had done the previous week. However his query as to whether the pupils would be 'back home or in school' was heard as a 'bomb in school' by the receptionist. He asked: 'I want to do some litter-picking, can you tell me if the kids are on half term? Are the kids back home or in school?' Confused by Mr Morgan's Welsh accent, she alerted the school's head teacher to what she assumed was a threat, who phoned 999. Schoolchildren and staff were evacuated from the building on February 25 for six hours while police searched the premises, a court heard. Mr Morgan, 36, said he had hung up after speaking for 31 seconds with the receptionist after it had become clear she couldn't understand what he was saying. The gardener, who works for Tony Benger Landscaping, was found not guilty of intentionally communicating false information following a two-hour trial. Defending Mr Morgan, Kate Lara said that the speed at which he was speaking coupled with his accent and the receptionist's shock at hearing what she thought was a security threat to the school, led to the mix-up. In an email to supporters, organisers of Your Party, as it is called for now at least, has said that shows "the strength and breadth of feeling across our communities for a new kind of political party". Mr Corbyn, who has set up the left wing party with Zarah Sultana, another former Labour MP, has said more than 700,000 people have signed up for his new party in total. It raises questions about any impact the party could have in the Senedd elections in May 2026. Those signing up are told there will "soon" be an "inaugural conference" to "shape how your party works, what it stands for, and how we organise to win". The organisers say it will have a new name and that it is being formed because "the system is rigged". The email, signed "in solidarity" but not credited to an individual, says: "It is clear that there is an appetite for change in every nation and region across the UK and the numbers who have signed up to build a real alternative to poverty, inequality and war are staggering – a real 'wow factor'." The email references former Cynon Valley MP Beth Winter, who was not reselected by the Labour Party ahead of the 2024 election and has subsequently been an outspoken critic of it, and Mark Serwotka, the former boss of the PCS union, who was born in Cardiff. The email says: "Beth Winter and Mark Serwotka will be working with others across Wales – people within our communities, trade unions, social movements, campaigns and many more - to ensure that the party belongs to you. "Over the coming weeks they will be looking to hear your voice about how your party should work in our country. It will be for the people of Wales to determine the priorities and programme for Wales." Ms Winter is also listed on Companies House as one of three directors of MoU Operations, which is linked to Your Party in terms of processing data donations. On the Your Party website, it says "for donation processing, MoU Operations Ltd (Company number 16359847) acts as the data controller. MoU Operations Ltd is responsible for collecting and processing personal data associated with donations made via this website and any related financial transactions." It is not yet clear whether the party will be in a position to field candidates for the Senedd election in May 2026. If it does, the huge unknown is whether it will have enough support to get representation in the new look Senedd, but also whether it will impact current polling. Current polls show Plaid Cymru doing better than Labour, by - broadly - taking voters from them. A new left wing party with large supporter numbers could change the electoral projections we currently see. While parties traditionally keep their membership numbers under wraps, Reform UK has boasted that it now has more members than the Conservative Party in Wales and in January 2025, said it had 7,800 members in Wales. Glasgow is set to become the first council to do THIS
The scheme would see people being registered to vote for elections without having to apply themselves. Currently residents are responsible for their own registration. Glasgow City Council is planning to apply for funding to run an automatic voter registration pilot. Information used to register voters would potentially include council tax, claimant and school data. A number of councils in Wales are rolling out trials and Scotland's biggest city aims to apply for Holyrood funding to develop a proposal to be informed by the Welsh pilots. It is believed the move, which makes voting simpler, could increase turnout so fewer people miss out on the chance to have their say on what political candidates are elected. City SNP councillor Alex Kerr kick-started the process after bringing a motion to council asking for Glasgow to be put forward as a location for an 'automatic voter registration pilot' with the Scottish Government. Outlining the benefits of people being automatically registered, the motion said: 'Council considers this would meet the aims of increasing democratic well-being by widening the pool of those eligible to vote and removing unnecessary barriers from participation in the democratic process to some of the most deprived communities.' It added: 'Council further believes the success of such pilots would highlight the benefits of taking an approach which opens up democracy, as opposed to inadvertently closing routes into participation through implementation of unnecessary voter ID legislation which creates barriers to participation.' A paper on the topic said: 'Automatic voter registration (AVR) represents a shift from the existing approach of using data to invite potential electors to apply for inclusion in the electoral register to automatically enrolling known eligible persons on the register using data.' Councillors are recommended to note that the 'Electoral Registration Officer will apply for funding to develop the pilot proposal, on the basis that this will be informed by the Welsh pilots' and agreed that a 'further report be presented to the Committee before the end of the year.'
