University of Sharjah and American University of Sharjah announce the Second Sharjah International Conference on Education
Sharjah, UAE – Under the patronage of His Highness Sheikh Dr. Sultan bin Mohammed Al Qasimi, Supreme Council Member and Ruler of Sharjah, the University of Sharjah (UoS) and American University of Sharjah (AUS) have officially announced the organization of the Second Sharjah International Conference on Education: AI and Beyond, under the theme: "Towards Sustainable Smart Education: Artificial Intelligence and Digital Transformation – Enhancing Creativity and Innovation." The conference will take place on May 12–13, 2025, with the University of Sharjah hosting the first-day activities, followed by American University of Sharjah hosting the sessions of the second day.

AUS launches pathway to graduate studies in environmental science
The agreement, finalized in April 2025, builds on more than two decades of ties between AUS and AU, which share a long-standing institutional relationship dating back to AUS' founding. This latest partnership was spearheaded by Dr. Fatin Samara, a professor at AUS' Department of Biology, Chemistry and Environmental Sciences, who is also currently an adjunct faculty member at the Department of Environmental Sciences at AU. Under the 4+1 model, AUS students will complete their four-year bachelor's degree at AUS and transfer to American University for one additional year of study to complete their master's degree. Eligible students may transfer up to nine credits toward the master's degree, including two graduate-level courses and their senior research project, taken during their final year at AUS. A minimum GPA of 3.0 is required. As part of the agreement, AUS students admitted to the program will also receive a generous 50 percent tuition scholarship, significantly lowering the cost of graduate study in the US. 'We are excited to expand our partnership with the American University of Sharjah through an accelerated pathway to a master's degree in environmental science, said Dr. Vicky Wilkins, Provost of American University. 'This program equips students with the knowledge and skills to confront the complex sustainability challenges of today and tomorrow. Together, we are shaping the next generation of leaders who will drive global environmental progress.' Students applying can choose between a thesis track focused on environmental science research and a non-thesis track in environmental policy and advocacy. Both tracks emphasize interdisciplinary learning and real-world application and integrate science with policy, economics and global sustainability issues. After graduating, students will benefit from Washington, DC's position as an international hub for environmental research, advocacy and policy and its vibrant job market, where junior roles start at $60,000 and senior roles reach over $140,000 a year according to a job search and labor market data platform. Graduates of American University's Master of Science in Environmental Science have gone on to work at organizations such as the US Environmental Protection Agency, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, the World Bank, and the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission. AU's faculty are actively involved in cutting-edge research, from food systems and climate resilience to geospatial analysis and environmental toxicology, also making it an excellent destination for AUS graduates wishing to pursue an academic or research career. EPAA completes study on ingestion of marine debris by seabirds

Reinforcing Sharjah's Position as a Leading Regional Hub for Environmental and Biodiversity Research and Supporting Marine Ecosystem Sustainability Her Excellency Hana Saif Al Suwaidi, Chairperson of the Environment and Protected Areas Authority in Sharjah, stated: 'This unprecedented scientific study in the region reaffirms our firm commitment to monitoring and documenting pressing environmental challenges, in line with the vision of His Highness Sheikh Dr. Sultan bin Mohammed Al Qasimi, Member of the Supreme Council and Ruler of Sharjah. It represents a pioneering scientific accomplishment at both national and regional levels, based on a rigorous methodology that supports the development of evidence-based conservation policies and establishes a reliable database for tracking long-term trends. These findings lay a critical scientific foundation for monitoring the future impacts of marine waste on marine life, including seabirds, which play a key role in maintaining the balance of coastal ecosystems.' Examination of the Digestive Tracts of 478 Stranded Marine and Coastal Birds Across 17 Species The study involved the examination of the digestive systems of 478 stranded marine and coastal birds from 17 different species that were found deceased along the shores of the Arabian Gulf and the Gulf of Oman. The results revealed that 12.8% of the birds had ingested marine pollutants: 11.1% had consumed marine debris, and 1.7% contained crude oil and tar balls. Plastic polymers were the most commonly ingested materials, particularly among black-headed gulls (Chroicocephalus ridibundus), with polyethylene identified as the most prevalent polymer, followed by glass as another frequently ingested substance. Juvenile Large White-Headed Gulls Were More Susceptible to Debris Ingestion The findings further showed that juvenile birds of the large white-headed gull species were more prone to ingesting waste than their adult counterparts, highlighting the vulnerability of younger age groups to marine pollution. In a subsample of 20 birds, the ingestion of microplastics was examined. The results showed that microfibers made up 77.8% of all detected microplastics, suggesting that wastewater from laundry could be a major source of this type of pollution. The study also found that oil balls and fishing hooks posed immediate and serious threats to the survival of these birds. Sharjah Strandings Response Programme The Sharjah Strandings Response Program is a core component of EPAA's strategic agenda. It integrates scientific surveys, environmental research, marine life rescue efforts, and community awareness. By responding directly to cases of marine wildlife strandings across Sharjah, the program contributes to ecosystem monitoring, biodiversity conservation, and the advancement of environmental education and stewardship.

Dr Sultan Al Qasimi Centre recalls Ruler's doctorate from HYU
