Reinforcing Sharjah's Position as a Leading Regional Hub for Environmental and Biodiversity Research
and Supporting Marine Ecosystem Sustainability
Her Excellency Hana Saif Al Suwaidi, Chairperson of the Environment and Protected Areas Authority in Sharjah, stated: 'This unprecedented scientific study in the region reaffirms our firm commitment to monitoring and documenting pressing environmental challenges, in line with the vision of His Highness Sheikh Dr. Sultan bin Mohammed Al Qasimi, Member of the Supreme Council and Ruler of Sharjah. It represents a pioneering scientific accomplishment at both national and regional levels, based on a rigorous methodology that supports the development of evidence-based conservation policies and establishes a reliable database for tracking long-term trends. These findings lay a critical scientific foundation for monitoring the future impacts of marine waste on marine life, including seabirds, which play a key role in maintaining the balance of coastal ecosystems.'
Her Excellency added: 'At the EPAA, we are committed to continuing these specialized research efforts in collaboration with local and international experts, to further strengthen Sharjah's position as a regional hub for environmental and biodiversity studies. These efforts also aim to reduce the impacts of marine pollution and promote public awareness of the importance of preserving biodiversity in our seas and coastal areas, supporting the sustainability of marine ecosystems across the Middle East.'
She emphasized that World Environment Day is not merely a celebration, but a global call to review environmental policies and enhance community-driven initiatives and green technologies aimed at protecting ecosystems. 'Through our research and awareness programs, we continue to promote a culture of sustainability within society, one that is rooted in biodiversity protection and striking a balance between development and conservation for future generations.'
Examination of the Digestive Tracts of 478 Stranded Marine and Coastal Birds Across 17 Species
The study involved the examination of the digestive systems of 478 stranded marine and coastal birds from 17 different species that were found deceased along the shores of the Arabian Gulf and the Gulf of Oman. The results revealed that 12.8% of the birds had ingested marine pollutants: 11.1% had consumed marine debris, and 1.7% contained crude oil and tar balls. Plastic polymers were the most commonly ingested materials, particularly among black-headed gulls (Chroicocephalus ridibundus), with polyethylene identified as the most prevalent polymer, followed by glass as another frequently ingested substance.
Juvenile Large White-Headed Gulls Were More Susceptible to Debris Ingestion
The findings further showed that juvenile birds of the large white-headed gull species were more prone to ingesting waste than their adult counterparts, highlighting the vulnerability of younger age groups to marine pollution.
In a subsample of 20 birds, the ingestion of microplastics was examined. The results showed that microfibers made up 77.8% of all detected microplastics, suggesting that wastewater from laundry could be a major source of this type of pollution. The study also found that oil balls and fishing hooks posed immediate and serious threats to the survival of these birds.
Sharjah Strandings Response Programme
The Sharjah Strandings Response Program is a core component of EPAA's strategic agenda. It integrates scientific surveys, environmental research, marine life rescue efforts, and community awareness. By responding directly to cases of marine wildlife strandings across Sharjah, the program contributes to ecosystem monitoring, biodiversity conservation, and the advancement of environmental education and stewardship.

Artificial intelligence tools take care of the elderly in Sharjah
The Emirate of Sharjah continues its pioneering efforts to reinforce its position as an age-friendly city by adopting artificial intelligence tools and smart care technologies to serve senior citizens within an integrated system based on a humanitarian vision led by His Highness Dr. Sheikh Sultan Bin Mohammed Al Qasimi, Supreme Council Member and Ruler of Sharjah. These initiatives reflect the Emirate's commitment to enhancing the quality of life for all segments of society, especially senior citizens. The goal is to create an environment that respects their needs and honours their experiences. Senior Citizens Services Forum 2024: Strategic recommendations In line with this approach, the Senior Citizens Services Forum, under the theme 'Artificial Intelligence in the Service of the Elderly,' held in 2024, formed an important milestone in shaping the future technological landscape in the field of elderly care. Organised by the Sharjah Social Services Department, the forum concluded with a set of strategic recommendations to increase the application of smart technologies in elderly care. The most notable recommendations included building effective partnerships with the private sector to launch specialised technical and training programmes targeting this group, and involving the elderly in decision-making by forming advisory committees that represent their voice and express their actual needs. A panel discussion on AI for the elderly under way. Other recommendations also covered expanding the use of assistive tools in providing healthcare services and daily follow-up. They proposed developing integrated digital platforms linking healthcare and social service providers. This would facilitate safer and easier access to medical and psychological support, as well as remote consultations. Smart platforms facilitating access to services As a continuation of this approach, the Emirate of Sharjah has developed several digital platforms that make services more accessible and support the independence of the senior citizens within a fully integrated smart environment. Within this framework, the Sharjah Social Services Department launched the 'Virtual Social Adviser' platform, a smart tool supported by artificial intelligence that allows the elderly to communicate with social and healthcare service providers from their homes, via interactive audio and video channels. In addition, the 'Virtual Companion' service was launched, relying on smart screens inside the homes of the elderly, enabling them to have daily communication with nursing, psychological, and social support teams to reduce isolation and enhance mental health. Innovative and supportive smart tools Alongside interactive platforms, a set of innovative smart tools have been employed to support the daily lifestyles of the elderly and achieve the highest levels of safety and comfort at home. The 'Mishwar' service contributes to transporting the elderly and people with disabilities to health centres, while the 'Ijaba' service, since its launch in 2022, has enabled the completion of official transactions for home care centre beneficiaries, such as renewing official documents without the need to leave home. Active ageing and community participation The Emirate's efforts are not limited to healthcare alone but extend to aspects of social and cultural interaction, within an integrated vision to promote the concept of active ageing and community participation. Sharjah's social policies work to enhance this concept by engaging the elderly in cultural, social, and sports activities. These are supported by artificial intelligence technologies specifically designed to suit their abilities. The Emirate also provides digital training programmes to improve their technical skills, empowering them and increasing their interaction with electronic services. Towards a smart and safe environment for the elderly These initiatives create a sustainable system that embodies Sharjah's commitment to building a smart and safe environment that preserves the dignity of senior citizens and ensures them a high quality of life at every stage.
