A UKRAINIAN woman who lost a leg on the front line hailed the surgeons who saved her — and inspired her to help others.
Rusya Danilkina, 21, filmed the aftermath of the blast that changed her life and, incredibly, is now empowered by it.

She was a radio operator in the Ukrainian army in February 2023 when she was hit by shrapnel from one of Vladimir Putin's glide bombs in Kherson.
Two years on, she has become a social media star, documenting her recovery to 125,000 Instagram followers.
That includes the nine seconds of horrific footage from Kherson.
She said: 'I had my phone in my right hand as I looked down and saw that my left leg was gone.

'I could smell explosives and flesh, there was blood everywhere and parts of my body, it was terrible and I thought I was going to die.
'I knew in an instant my life would never be the same again. I took the video and sent it to my brother as I wanted him to know that I had been badly hurt.
'I still watch the video and it might sound crazy but I like the moment of my injury because it changed my life and showed how strong I can be. If it was not for my injury, I would not have the life that I have now.'
Rusya said in the weeks afterwards she would 'lie in my hospital bed staring at the ceiling thinking I did not want to live any more'.
But she saw others with 'worse injuries' before being taken to the Superhumans Centre in Lviv, recently visited by Prince Harry.
Since it opened in April 2023, it has fitted 1,100 patients with 1,500 prosthetic limbs.
One was Rusya, who said: 'This is not just a hospital, it is a place of power. It gives people a future.'

She now loves surfing and rock climbing and has been to Australia, France and the US.
She also works at Superhumans, helping other veterans adapt to civilian life.
Rusya said: 'People ask where I get my strength from. When you see someone learn to walk again at the hospital or hold a glass for the first time with a new hand, you can't not be inspired. Everything is in your head — if you decide to succeed then you will.'
Most patients at Superhumans are soldiers but civilians such as Olena Levytska, 38, are also treated.
She fell under a train and lost a leg as crowds fled a shell attack in Kryvyi Rih.
Her children now call her Terminator thanks to her new limb with 'Made in Ukraine' printed on it.
Olena, who ran a clothes business, said: 'I have had 19 operations but I'm fine and can do things better than some with two legs. I feel my future looks bright.'

Watch: Drones smashes into apartment block in massive Russian raid on Kyiv
Russian airstrikes killed at least 14 people, including a US citizen, and wounded dozens more in 'one of the most terrible' overnight barrages aimed at Kyiv. A kamikaze attack drone was filmed flying straight into the upper levels of a multi-storey residential building, with president Volodymyr Zelensky saying civilians were still trying to escape the rubble as of Tuesday morning. In the footage, taken in the early hours of the morning, the drone explodes in a huge fireball, hitting the building while many would have been asleep. The Russian attack struck 27 sites across the capital, including critical infrastructure sites as well as a nursery, according to the interior ministry. In total the barrage lasted almost nine-hours, making it one of the longest of the conflict to date. More than 100 people have sought medical treatment, with 68 hospitalised, said mayor Vitali Klitschko, who posted a video on Telegram while holding a cluster-munition apparently used in the strike. Mr Zelensky said 440 drones and 32 missiles were fired at Ukraine, including 'one of the most terrible strikes on Kyiv'. He added: 'People are currently trying to get out of the rubble of an ordinary residential building. It is not clear how many there are.' In the capital's Solomianskyi district, a huge chunk had been taken out of the tower-block by the Shahed strike, leaving piles of splintered wood and concrete and a gaping hole in the structure. Standing by the attack site, Mr Klitschko said 'there is no exact information yet about the buried [and] rescuers are working on the ground.' A 62-year-old US citizen died during the strike, the mayor added. The man's identity has not been released. Video from the site showed a man and woman waiting by the rubble as rescuers worked. The woman has her head in her hands, while the man rocks backwards and forwards and weeps. The Ukrainian air force said on Tuesday it had shot down 402 of 440 drones, and 26 of 32 missiles, launched overnight. Russia has drastically increased its production of Shahed-style attack drones, firing around 300 a month last summer and now more than 4,000. Russian engineers have improved the domestically-produced variant, known as the Geran, making it faster and harder to jam with electronic warfare systems. Mr Zelensky said: 'Such attacks are pure terrorism. And the whole world, the USA and Europe must finally react the way a civilised society reacts to terrorism.' US-led talks over a ceasefire have stalled in recent weeks. US President Donald Trump, who had pushed for a 30-day ceasefire, said that he might have to 'let them fight for a while' after Putin refused to co-operate. Andrii Sybiha, Ukraine's foreign minister, said: 'Putin does this on purpose... He sends a signal of total disrespect to the United States and other partners who have called for an end to the killing.'

He also nearly severed his entire left arm. He later told doctors he felt completely "overwhelmed" and acted on a "sudden urge" to hurt himself during what was diagnosed as a drug-triggered episode. The unnamed man had taken large quantities of kratom, a herbal supplement with opioid-like effects and had also been smoking cannabis. Kratom, which has been linked to dozens of deaths, is legal in some countries, banned in others, and completely unregulated in many. The man had been brewing kratom leaves into tea for five years, believing it helped his sleep and mood. Doctors said the combination of drug use, mental illness, and suddenly stopping his medication triggered a psychotic state in which he acted under powerful delusions. Despite his severe injuries, the man still managed to call the emergency services to come and help him. When he finally arrived at the A&E, he was awake but confused and weak, doctors from various hospitals in Czechia, wrote in a report about his case. He showed no signs of distress about what had happened and was unable to recall some of the details of the horror that had just happened. Toxicology tests confirmed mitragynine, the active compound in kratom, and cannabis, but no other substances. Video reveals the eye-watering reality of a penis fracture The man had stopped taking his schizophrenia medication, quetiapine, just two days before. Surgeons managed to save his life but could not reattach the amputated organs. He later underwent skin graft surgery to cover the penile stump. Doctors warned the case highlights the serious dangers of kratom, especially for people with mental health conditions. 'This case raises awareness of the serious adverse effects of kratom, especially in patients with a history of mental illness,' they wrote in the Frontiers in Psychiatry. Kratom is also under growing international scrutiny from health bodies. The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) warns it can cause liver damage, seizures and addiction. And a US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) report found 91 deaths linked to the substance between 2016 and 2017, though most of those involved other drugs as well. Although this case report did not specifically focus on the effects of cannabis, studies have linked cannabis use to worse outcomes for mental illness, including schizophrenia. The man was stabilised in hospital and discharged a week later, with no remaining psychotic symptoms, the report concluded.

The stunning claims come after Police Scotland and family sources from Mongahan's family insisted the bitter Glasgow rivals had nothing to do with the double murders. Cops here had insisted days after the May 31 slaying they had no information to suggest the horror crimes were in any way linked to the gang feuding which has been going on here. But Malaga-based Spanish police chief Pedro Agudo Novo today described the suspected killer arrested in Liverpool last Friday as a member of the Daniels gang which has long been at loggerheads with the Lyons gang the dead men belonged to. The chief superintendent also revealed the dramatic arrest was made as detectives discovered the alleged gunman was about to flee his UK bolthole for a "paradise island tax haven." Speaking at the first press conference Spanish police have held since Monaghan and Lyons Jr were shot dead at Monaghans Irish Bar in Fuengirola after the Champions League final, Mr Agudo Novo who heads up a provincial Judicial Police unit, said: 'The double murder was carried out by a professional killer and member of one of the victims' rival gangs. 'In this case we're not talking about an independent hired killer but an internal member of the rival Daniels gang who ends up assassinating two members of an enemy gang. 'I want to highlight the high level of professionalism of this individual. Not only did he walk up to the table where the victims were sitting and kill the first man before continuing with his mission when his gun jammed. 'It's not normal for a criminal to react the way he did in the face of this unexpected problem and resolve the situation to continue and pursue his second victim inside the bar and kill him. 'His escape was also a very professional one. It was clear he had previously studied all the cameras in the area and undertaken some other investigative procedures I can't go into at this stage. 'He had his escape route perfectly planned out, picking areas where there were a lack of cameras and at one point even entering a train tunnel and crossing the tracks because he knew he couldn't be filmed there.' The police chief said "Absolutely" when asked if he thought the suspect, now facing extradition to Spain and a double murder charge, had travelled from the UK to Spain to carry out his alleged crimes. He added: 'His escape route involved travelling from Spain to Portugal and he then took a plane from Portugal to Leeds. 'Once he got to Leeds, with the support of his gang, he changed addresses three times. 'It took us four days to get an idea of who he was and another three, so seven days in total, to get a name for the man we wanted arrested. 'That's when we contacted the British police and asked a court in Fuengirola to issue an international arrest warrant. 'The last address the suspect was tracked down to was in Liverpool. 'We discovered that the day he was arrested he was planning to flee the UK for a paradise island, a tax haven with which there would have been no extradition treaty.' Mr Agudo Novo was asked to name the destination but said he couldn't for 'operational reasons' as the investigation remained open and police were hopeful of making more arrests, although he said he believed the suspected gunman had 'acted alone.' Colleague Juan Antonio Sillero, Chief Inspector of the specialist Udyco Costa del Sol police unit which also led the operation to track down the alleged double killer, said he believed both Monaghan and Lyons Jr were the intended targets and the operation to assassinate them was launched after their rivals received information on where they would be on May 31. He said revenge killings couldn't be ruled out and they were doing 'everything possible' to avoid more bloodshed. In a statement issued after this morning's press conference at the Spanish National Police HQ in Malaga, the force said: 'The investigation began when just before midnight on May 31 a man who was hiding his face behind a cap and a scarf round his neck opened fire against two people who had been sitting on the terrace of a pub in Fuengirola. 'The first shots fired killed one victim instantly. The second victim managed to escape after taking advantage of the moment the killer's gun jammed and took refuge inside the premises until he was hit again receiving two shots which ended his life. 'Afterwards the suspect fled the scene and crossed three borders in less than 15 hours. 'After leaving Spain he reached Portugal by land and from there took a flight to the UK. 'During his journey he changed his physical appearance, and even shaved his face completely, to avoid being recognised. 'Once he was in the UK, he hid in different residential dwellings to hamper the investigation and his subsequent investigation.' The suspect, who has been named in the UK as 44-year-old Michael Riley from Merseyside but has not been formally named by Spanish police although they confirmed today he is "English and not Scottish", has been remanded in custody after a first court appearance as Spain continues to try to get him extradited. Career criminal Monaghan, who fled Scotland for Spain after a failed attempt on his life outside a Glasgow primary school in 2017, was tried but acquitted over the murder of notorious Glasgow hood Kevin 'Gerbil' Carroll at an Asda car park in 2010. In August 2017 he and Eddie Lyons Jr, both members of the Lyons Glasgow crime family, were cleared of being involved in a brutal street attack on three men outside the Campsie bar in Bishopbriggs, East Dunbartonshire. The Fuengirola pub murders followed the fatal shooting nearly seven weeks ago of a 32-year-old British man in nearby Calahonda a 15-minute drive from the Irish bar towards Marbella. He was shot dead around 8pm on April 21 in a professional hit as he headed back to his car after finishing a football match with friends. The killers fled in a getaway car that was later torched. Police are investigating the brutal assassination as a drug-related gang shooting but have yet to make any arrests. The victim has not been named but was known to come from Liverpool. Reports at the time described the incident as the fourth shooting so far that month on the Costa del Sol, where rival gangs have increasingly used extreme violence to settle scores and a number of international mafias are known to have a base. Four days before the Calahonda shooting a 34-year-old man was rushed to the Costa del Sol Hospital in Marbella after being shot outside a nightclub in the famous Costa del Sol resort. The May 31 shootings of Monaghan, 46, and Lyons Jr, 43, had been linked to the long-running feud between their gang and the Glasgow-based Lyons Crime Family. In a statement released on June 3, Police Scotland made it clear it was not directly investigating the murders. "The investigation into the fatal shootings in Fuengirola is being carried out by Spanish police," it said. "Police Scotland is supporting Spanish police where requested, however at this time we have no officers deployed within Spain. "There is currently no intelligence to suggest the deaths of these two men in Spain are linked to the recent criminal attacks in Scotland being investigated as part of Operation Portaledge. 4 Ross Monaghan was a top figure in the Lyons gang before his death. It comes the day after we revealed a man accused of murdering the Scots hoods in Spain would have bolted if granted bail. Michael Riley, 44, of Merseyside, was ruled a flight risk when he appeared before Westminster magistrates on Saturday. The double-hit suspect was remanded in custody during the brief hearing following his arrest in Liverpool on Friday. His lawyers did not apply for bail ahead of a second court date on Thursday, when he is due to appear via video link.
