Rita Moreno canceled her appearance on John Mulaney's Netflix show. Here's why
Actress Rita Moreno canceled her scheduled appearance on John Mulaney's Netflix talk show at the last minute because she couldn't make it out of her Berkeley home.
During the Wednesday, April 23, episode of ' Everybody's Live With John Mulaney,' the actor and comedian explained that the 93-year-old Emmy, Grammy, Oscar and Tony-winning legend 'cannot be here tonight.'
'We hope she's doing OK,' Mulaney said. 'Rita, if you're watching — I don't know why you would be — but we hope you're doing great, and we're excited to see you on another episode soon.'
A representative for Moreno told Entertainment Weekly the next day that Moreno was experiencing vertigo, a temporary episode of dizziness or disorientation.
'Happy to report nothing serious,' the representative said in a statement. 'Rita came down with a bout of vertigo on Tuesday. And because she lives in Berkeley, CA, she couldn't get on a plane down to LA.'
Moreno's representative added, 'She is bummed. We heard today she's on the mend.'
Mulaney's fellow 'Saturday Night Live' alum Tina Fey became the last-minute substitute for Moreno.
'Have you ever filled in for Rita Moreno before?' Mulaney asked Fey.
'Once, in the movie 'West Side Story,' but it goes by so quickly you can't even tell it's me,' Fey joked, referring to Moreno's star turn as Anita in the 1961 musical film.
Comedian Conan O'Brien and actress Ayo Edebiri also were on Wednesday's show.
Moreno, a longtime Berkeley resident, has been experiencing a career resurgence since co-starring in Steven Spielberg's ' West Side Story ' (2021), a remake of the Academy Award-winning original that earned her a best supporting actress Oscar. She has since appeared in the surprise hit ' 80 for Brady ' alongside Jane Fonda and Lily Tomlin, and Sally Field and had a recurring role in the sitcom 'Lopez vs Lopez' starring George Lopez.
She also was profiled in the documentary ' Rita Moreno: Just a Girl Who Decided to Go for It ' (2021) and she was honored with a Barbie doll in her likeness last year.
Moreno won a Tony Award for best featured actress in a play for 'The Ritz' in 1975; a Grammy for best recording for children for 'The Electric Company' in 1973; and an Emmy for outstanding continuing or single performance by a supporting actress in variety or music for an episode of 'The Muppet Show' in 1977, making her one of the handful of performers to achieve an EGOT, the grand slam of performing.
