Will the Broad Street Bullies be back? Flyers go big at the NHL draft
Five of their eight selections in
the NHL draft
stand 6-foot-3 or taller, including first-rounders Porter Martone and Jack Nesbitt. They overlooked smaller talent to get a hulking winger in Martone at No. 6 and traded up for Nesbitt, a 6-5 center, with the 12th pick.
'It's a nice bonus that they're both tall and will bring us size, as well,' general manager Daniel Briere said. 'It just kind of worked out that way. It wasn't a plan that we had in mind going into the draft that we wanted to get bigger. It just happened that way.'
Philadelphia's second-rounders were 6-6, 232-pound defenseman Carter Amico and a trio of nice-sized forwards: Jack Murtagh, Shane Vansaghi and Matthew Gard. Murtagh described himself as 'a high-end workhorse.'
Their second fifth-round pick, Luke Vlooswyk, called himself 'a big defensive, defenseman.' He said Gard, a teammate with the Western Hockey League's Red Deer Rebels, is 'a big kid like me.'
Bulking up the prospect pool makes sense for the Flyers, who have a lot of smaller talent in the system, from
budding star Matvei Michkov
already on the roster to 2024 first-rounder Jett Luchanko, who played four games for them last season. They also just
traded for 6-foot center Trevor Zegras
and could use some size in their not-too-distant future.
Bloodlines
After William Horcoff, whose dad Shawn spent 15 seasons in the NHL, went 24th to Pittsburgh in the first round, Day 2 of the draft was full of the sons and nephews of retired players hearing their names called.
It started with Seattle trading up to get Blake Fiddler, son of Vernon, early in the second round. Eric Nilson, son of Marcus, went a handful of picks later to Anaheim.
There were more familiar names picked in the third round: Artyom Gonchar, nephew of 2009 Stanley Cup champion Sergei Gonchar, to the New York Rangers, and Blake Vanek, son of Thomas, to Ottawa.
Italian history
After Simon Wang became the
highest-ranked China-born NHL draft pick
when San Jose chose him at No. 33, Matous Jan Kucharcik made some Italian hockey history.
Taken by Buffalo 103rd, Kucharcik is a Czech national but became the fourth player born in Italy to be selected.

American tennis star dumps World No. 1 in stunning U.S. Open move
When it was first announced that American tennis star Emma Navarro would play with world No. 1 Jannik Sinner at the reimagined Mixed Doubles event at the U.S. Open, Navarro joked that she 'would try to get a better partner next year.' 'He was begging me to play, he was saying, 'I heard about your volleys and your doubles skills. Please. please play with me,' Navarro cracked last month on Tennis Channel. 'I said, 'Yeah, sure, I guess. I guess I'll play with you. You're not the best player, but I'll make an exception and try to get a better partner next year.'' Well, it turns out that Navarro won't play with Sinner at all in the $1 million event that runs Tuesday and Wednesday at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center. The No. 11-ranked player in the world and the daughter of billionaire Ben Navarro, Emma Navarro pulled out of the Mixed Doubles in order to play a WTA 500 event in Monterrey, Mexico in the week leading up to the start of the singles tournament at the U.S. Open (Aug. 24). German Cup: Ten Hag makes successful debut with Bayer Leverkusen and Bielefeld upsets Bremen
BERLIN (AP) — Erik ten Hag made a winning start as Bayer Leverkusen coach with a 4-0 result at fourth-tier team Sonnenhof Großaspach in the first round of the German Cup on Friday. Patrik Schick, Brazilian wing back Arthur, debutant Christian Kofane and Álex Grimaldo all scored, but they assumed control only after Großaspach captain Volkan Celikwas was sent off in the 66th with two bookings in as many minutes. Leverkusen was forced to defend for long periods after Schick's 32nd-minute opener. The Czech forward also needed to clear the ball off the line. Arthur scored the second shortly after Celikwas' sending off and the other goals followed Mert Tasdelen's late sending off for a bad challenge on Leverkusen defender Axel Tape. Ten Hag, the former Manchester United manager, took over from the Real Madrid-bound Xabi Alonso and has had little time to work with a squad undergoing huge changes. Key players like Florian Wirtz, Jeremie Frimpong and Granit Xhaka have left while Kofane, Tape, Ernest Poku, Ibrahim Maza, Jarell Quansah and goalkeeper Mark Flekken all made their debuts on Friday. 'Of course it needs time, you could see not every action worked out,' Leverkusen sporting director Simon Rolfes said of the changes. 'But we saw today that we've got interesting young players. Ibrahim Maza did well and showed his qualities between the lines. And that's why it will take a little time, but we still have a good team.' Bielefeld does it again American forward Isaiah Young struck in the final minutes to fire last season's beaten finalist Arminia Bielefeld into the second round with a 1-0 win over Werder Bremen. The Bundesliga side's Leonardo Bittencourt was sent off in the 54th and Bielefeld pushed hard for the winner. Young made his entrance in the 79th and sent the home fans wild when he tucked the ball inside the left post in the third minute of stoppage time. Bielefeld, then playing in the third division, knocked out a host of Bundesliga clubs — including Bremen — on its way to the final in May, when Stuttgart proved too strong. Stuttgart's title defense won't start till later this month as it's playing Bayern Munich in the German Supercup on Saturday.
