Eight years of Smart City Mission ends, but Nashik city's parking woes remain

Time of Indiaa day ago

Nashik: The city's parking woes persist, despite the Smart City Mission concluding in March after eight years, during which the proposed on-street and off-street parking facilities at 32 locations failed to materialise.
Resultantly, the city faces a growing parking crisis owing to a rapid increase in vehicles and lack of designated parking spaces, forcing vehicle owners to park on roadsides, causing traffic congestion during peak hours, especially in the old city area.
Bhushan Gavande, a city resident, said parking was one of the major issues in the city as there were no parking spaces to park vehicles. "It becomes difficult when we go to market areas with family members.
We have to park our vehicles somewhere and walk over 1km to the market. Hence, there is a need to start parking spaces in the city for the convenience of the residents," he said.
In 2018, a private agency appointed by the Smart City firm launched "pay-n-park" facilities at 33 locations (28 on-street and 5 off-street) in phases. A trial for additional parking spaces began in Jan 2020, but the project was halted due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

Thereafter, the private agency concerned refused to operate the parking spaces, seeking an extension in the contract period by three years, a waiver of Rs 17.5 lakh royalty annually to the Nashik Municipal Corporation (NMC) and a hike in parking charges.
The Smart City firm gave an extension of one-and-a-half years to the contract period because of the Covid pandemic, but refused any more extension. Besides, the Smart City corporation also refused to waive the royalty to NMC.
Finally, the agency requested the authority to exit from the project. During a board meeting, the directorial board of the Smart City firm put the ball in the court of the NMC commissioner and told him to decide on the issue. Though five civic commissioners came and left during the three years, the parking issues remained unresolved.
Around seven to eight months back, the Smart City corporation handed over the parking spaces to the civic body, but it is yet to be executed even by NMC. When contacted, Sumant More, CEO, Nashik Municipal Smart City Development Corporation Ltd, said the contractor concerned refused to operate parking spaces. "Hence, they transferred all the smart parking spaces to the civic body," More added.

Dubai's housing assistance: Grants vs. loans, what citizens need to know

Dubai provides housing grants and loans to citizens for construction, renovation, and home purchases based on income and eligibility./ Image is generated by AI for illustrative and creative purposes Navigating housing support in Dubai doesn't have to be overwhelming, even though it can sometimes feel like a labyrinth. Understanding whether you're eligible for a housing grant or a housing loan is the first step toward making the right decision for your housing needs. Whether you're a first-time homebuilder, someone looking to renovate, or in need of a quick housing solution, Dubai's government, through the Mohammed bin Rashid Housing Establishment, provides various options to make homeownership and improvement more accessible. Let's cut through the jargon and break down the essential details, eligibility, benefits, and application process, so you can find the best fit for your situation. Understanding Housing Grants and Loans The Mohammed bin Rashid Housing Establishment offers two primary forms of assistance for Dubai citizens: housing grants and housing loans. Each is designed to support citizens based on their specific financial situation, family status, and housing needs. Housing Grants: These are typically aimed at low-income families, widows, divorcees with children, and people of determination (those with disabilities). Citizens who do not own property and meet the income requirements can apply for a grant. The key focus of grants is to provide financial aid for building new homes, maintaining old properties, or purchasing prefabricated housing solutions. Housing Loans: Housing loans are designed for citizens with a stable income who can repay the amount over time. These loans are intended to help with building or buying homes, as well as renovating or expanding existing properties. The loan terms depend on the applicant's financial status, and repayments are made monthly. According to the Mohammed bin Rashid Housing Establishment's mission, the goal is to provide adequate housing solutions to all eligible applicants, prioritizing low-income families and ensuring that housing developments reflect the unique cultural and social fabric of Dubai's communities. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like 5 Books Warren Buffett Wants You to Read In 2025 Blinkist: Warren Buffett's Reading List Undo Who Is Eligible for Housing Assistance? 200 smart AI powered cameras start to detect traffic violations

Mangaluru: Nearly 200 smart cameras installed on Mangaluru city roads by the Mangaluru Smart City Limited (MSCL) have started capturing images of traffic violators. Once implemented fully, the intelligent traffic management system will send auto-generated traffic slips to the mobile phones of vehicle owners. Mangaluru City traffic police have already commenced the trial run, and violators have been receiving alert messages on their phones. However, the system will be officially launched in July, and thereafter, violators will have to pay penalties as per the Motor Vehicles Rules. The high-resolution cameras installed at prominent locations in the city started detecting various violations, including two-wheeler riding without a helmet, car driving without a seat belt, wrong-side driving, and signal jumping. The MSCL installed nearly 200 artificial intelligence cameras at various locations on the main roads of the city. High-resolution cameras equipped with AI tools are monitoring traffic flow and effectively detecting violations. The cameras provide real-time visuals, while the AI tools analyse the captured footage to identify and track traffic offences. DCP (crime & traffic) K Ravi Shankar told TOI that the entire system is under a trial run and it will be made fully functional from July 1. "Those who violate traffic rules will receive messages on their mobile phones during the trial run. However, we are not framing charges based on the camera inputs for the time being. We are planning to launch the system from next month with the help of the National Informatics Centre (NIC). All cameras are linked to the NIC. After completing all necessary procedures, the system will be in place to check traffic violations in the city. In the next 10 days, we will be able to rectify all technical issues," he said. Smart cameras have been installed on MG Road, Bendoorwell, Mangaladevi, Pandeshwar, Mallikatta, Bejai, and several other locations.
