Look for 'vehicles that get great MPG, serve a purpose or a rare vehicle will retain the most value,' said Chris Pyle, auto expert at JustAnswer. 'Research a used car on KBB.com to see how much value the car loses for each year of age.'
The good news is that with the right research and guidance, you can find a car that ticks all the boxes of everything from safety features to adaptive cruise control. You want to choose an affordable brand that won't lose its worth or its driving dynamics too quickly. GOBankingRates spoke to automotive experts to find out which brands have the best cars to buy in 2025.
Toyota was at the top of the experts' list for affordable, dependable cars that keep their value. A variety of models are built to last with great cargo space and sleek design.
'Overall, Toyota always emerges as the top choice for buyers seeking inexpensive cars,' said Evaldas Zabitis, automotive expert at carVertical. 'Firstly, it offers the broadest range of affordable cars on the market, and some even come equipped with very fuel-efficient hybrid powertrains, all without exceeding $30,000.
'A second advantage is Toyota's consistent reliability record across several generations of different models, which minimizes maintenance costs… Finally, when it comes to purchasing an affordable Toyota, it's very rare to encounter dealers who overcharge above the MSRP.'
Jamie Mitri, manager at Cumberland Hill Auto Sales and Service, agreed that Toyotas are great cars that will last. 'You may be making a bit of an investment at first, but their parts and maintenance is top notch and affordable, and you won't regret the purchase,' she said. 'They are the best value car that we can think of.'
Brian Moody, executive editor at Kelley Blue Book, recommended the Toyota Corolla, a longtime favorite among budget-conscious buyers. It's still a top choice for its impressive fuel efficiency and reliable performance.

Find Out:
Ford has been known as an affordable and iconic American brand for decades, thanks to its rugged trucks and practical family vehicles offering roomy interior space. In 2025, Ford continues to be a trusted choice for budget-conscious buyers.
'While Ford vehicles can get quite expensive, they offer a surprising amount of high-quality and affordable vehicles on the lower end,' said Nigel Tunnacliffe, co-founder and CEO of Coastline Academy.
'For example, the Ford Maverick — one of the brand's smaller trucks — offers impressive carrying capacity and torque, while also featuring a hybrid engine option for improved fuel economy. As far as trucks go, it offers some of the best consistent value for your money.'
With the Maverick, you get the hauling power and performance of a truck without spending as much on gas, thanks to the hybrid option.
Moody also recommended the Maverick, as well as the Bronco, as great, budget-friendly and high-performance options.

Honda has long been synonymous with reliability and affordability, and the brand's 2025 base model lineup will save you money over the long haul. Whether you are looking for a low starting price or better gas mileage, there's a good chance Honda has got you covered.
'Honda offers a versatile lineup of vehicles within a competitive price range,' said Tunnacliffe. 'Their vehicles have a strong safety performance and good fuel efficiency, driving down long-term costs. The brand also offers a range of electric and hybrid vehicles, which, despite a higher upfront cost, allow for exceptional savings on fuel throughout their lifespan.'
Moody recommended Honda as a brand that keeps a high resale value. He said that, generally speaking, they 'retain more of their original price over a five-year term than others.' He specifically recommended the Accord, a perennial favorite among compact car enthusiasts.

2025 Honda HR-V Sport
2025 Hona Civic Hybrid
While often overshadowed by larger automotive giants, Mazda has carved out a niche for itself as a brand that delivers affordable driving.
'Mazda has always been in the shadow of the bigger Japanese manufacturers,' said Zabitis.
He added that even Mazda's most affordable models still feel luxurious.
'What's truly remarkable is that even the most affordable Mazdas are far from basic transportation,' he said. 'For about $25,000 to $27,000, Mazda offers a choice of refined, well-built vehicles with luxury car-like features, making them a very good value.'
On top of that upscale feel, Mazdas are also low-cost to maintain over the long term.
'Furthermore, the affordable price also offers affordable maintenance,' said Zabitis. 'Like Toyota and its luxury division, Lexus, Mazdas proved to be among the most cost-effective car brands to maintain.'

2026 Lexus GX Review, Pricing, and Specs

Overview The Lexus GX is now a thoroughly modern luxury off-roader, sharing much with the recently downsized Toyota Land Cruiser. But while the LC uses a hybrid four-cylinder for motivation, the GX gets a 349-hp twin-turbo V-6 engine backed by a four-wheel-drive system with a low range. Creature comforts abound in all versions of the Lexus, while the Overtrail is set up for the most serious off-roading. One compromise of the off-road-ready Overtrail trims is the loss of the available third-row seat, limiting the passenger count to five. That said, the GX's rearmost row is pretty tight, so you may not miss it all that much. What's New for 2026? There are no major changes expected for the GX this year. Pricing and Which One to Buy The price of the 2026 Lexus GX is expected to start around $66,000 and go up to $82,000 depending on the trim and options. Premium $66,000 (est) Premium+ $70,000 (est) Overtrail $73,000 (est) Luxury $78,000 (est) Overtrail+ $81,000 (est) Luxury+ $82,000 (est) The GX550 has two personalities: luxury on-roader and trail-conquering off-roader. For buyers who plan on spending the majority of their time on asphalt, we'd suggest the Luxury trim, as it classes up the GX550's interior with plenty of nice-to-have features, including semi-aniline leather upholstery; 10-way-adjustable front seats with massage, heat, and ventilation; illuminated door sill plates; and second-row window shades. It also comes with the bigger 22-inch wheels that better fill the GX's large wheel wells for a more upscale look. For a bit more, the Overtrail+ trim provides a more rugged appearance and significantly more capability for off-roading, but the compromise is that it eliminates the GX's third row of seats and some of the luxury items listed above. But if you're planning outdoor adventures that include traversing challenging terrain, the Overtrail is well worth consideration. Engine, Transmission, and Performance A twin-turbocharged 3.4-liter V-6 engine that makes 349 horsepower is standard in the GX550. A 10-speed automatic is also standard, and all models come with four-wheel drive. Overtrail and Overtrail+ trims are decked out with more off-road goodies than the other models, including 18-inch wheels with 33-inch all-terrain tires, an aluminum skid plate, an adaptive suspension system with more wheel articulation, a crawl-control feature, and selectable drive modes for differing terrains. The GX550 feels punchy off the line, but on the highway we noticed a disconcerting amount of hood flutter. The ride is fairly stiff, especially on the available upsized wheels. Steering is crisp, but the GX's handling is about what you'd expect for the tall, boxy SUV, meaning there's plenty of body roll. The Overtrail shines off-road; outward visibility is excellent, which is especially handy when navigating tight trails. We confirmed as much in an off-road-oriented comparison test. The transfer case allows the driver to select the low-range gearset without locking the center differential, which allows for a tighter turning radius, and the Electronic Kinetic Dynamic Suspension System (E-KDSS) can disconnect the front or rear anti-roll bars independently of one another to help improve stability, reduce head toss, and increase traction over rough terrain. 0–60-MPH Times At our test track, a GX550 Premium hit 60 mph in a respectable 6.2 seconds. That's a full second quicker than the previous-generation GX managed at our track. It's also quicker than the Land Cruiser's 7.7-second effort. View Photos Michael Simari | Car and Driver Towing and Payload Capacity The GX550 can tow up to 9096 pounds, which far exceeds the previous-gen GX460's 6500 pounds as well as the Land Cruiser's 6000-pound rating. The GX also tows more than luxury-brand rivals such as the Audi Q7 and the BMW X5. Fuel Economy and Real-World MPG The EPA hasn't released any fuel economy information for the 2026 GX yet, but the 2025 model earned ratings of 15 mpg city, 21 mpg highway, and 17 mpg combined. On our 75-mph highway route, the GX550 Premium we tested delivered on its 21-mpg estimate. The GX is well in arrears of the four-cylinder hybrid Land Cruiser's EPA numbers: 22 mpg city and 25 mpg highway. For more information about the GX's fuel economy, visit the EPA's website. Interior, Comfort, and Cargo Despite the GX's rugged exterior styling, luxurious environs await you once you climb aboard. Faux- or genuine-leather upholstery is available in a variety of colors, and Overtrail variants offer faux-suede accents in a dark green shade. Premium and Luxury trims have three rows of seats with space for up to seven with the standard second-row bench; a pair of captain's chairs is optional and brings the seating capacity down to six. Third-row space is severely limited, however; the Lexus TX crossover has a big advantage here. Overtrail models skip the third row altogether and seat five, but the middle passenger's foot room is compromised by the plastic base of the center console. A cooled storage bin, a head-up display, and a digital key fob are all available as options. In our testing, the GX550 Overtrail swallowed 18 carry-on-sized boxes behind the second-row seat and 33 with the rear seats folded, but the cargo floor is high off the ground making it awkward to load heavy items. View Photos Michael Simari | Car and Driver Infotainment and Connectivity All GX models come with a 14.0-inch infotainment system with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto and a separate 12.3-inch digital gauge display that can be reconfigured to show a variety of information to the driver. Nearly all climate controls are in the touchscreen. Most models have six USB-C ports spread throughout the interior, but Overtrail and Overtrail+ models get just four; a wireless smartphone charging pad is optional and positions the phone up and at an angle. A 10-speaker stereo is standard, but audiophiles can upgrade to a 21-speaker Mark Levinson surround-sound system. Safety and Driver-Assistance Features The GX comes equipped with a suite of driver-assistance features that includes automated emergency braking, pedestrian detection, and lane-departure warning. For more information about the GX's crash test results, visit the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) and Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) websites. Key safety features include: Standard automated emergency braking with pedestrian detection Standard lane-departure warning with lane-keeping assist Standard adaptive cruise control with a lane-centering feature Warranty and Maintenance Coverage When it comes to warranty coverage, Lexus outpaces rivals such as BMW and Mercedes-Benz. The 5 Worst Green Energy Projects Funded by Biden

Despite the Department of Government Efficiency's failures to cut spending and the president's support for a bill that will add $2.4 trillion to the federal deficit over the next 10 years, some wasteful government projects have been cut under the Trump administration. Energy Secretary Chris Wright recently canceled 24 grants approved by the Energy Department under former President Joe Biden. The action netted over $3 billion in savings. Earlier in May, Wright axed an additional $7 billion of green energy loans approved by Biden. Unfortunately for taxpayers, the savings that Wright has identified are only a drop in the bucket of the wasteful spending that the Biden Energy Department approved. Here are five of the most egregious examples: In December 2024, the Energy Department's Loan Programs Office (LPO) closed a $9.63 billion direct loan to BlueOval SK LLC, a joint venture between Ford and South Korean conglomerate SK On. The loan was approved to fund "the construction of three manufacturing plants, to produce batteries for Ford Motor Company's future Ford and Lincoln electric vehicles [E.V.s]," according to the award announcement. BlueOval has begun or completed construction for these facilities—one in western Tennessee called BlueOval City—and two in Hardin County, Kentucky, known as Kentucky 1 and 2. In addition to allocating millions of dollars in tax credits for the rights to house BlueOval City, the Tennessee Legislature also created the Megasite Authority of West Tennessee, reports Reason's Joe Lancaster. The board was granted the authority to execute contracts on behalf of development, which includes the power to seize private property through eminent domain. In most cases, the board lowballed local property owners, including Ray Jones, who was offered "a measly $8,165" for his acre of land, even though the going rate was $200,000 per acre. There is no set date for when the plant will open. Kentucky 1 has faced numerous occupational safety and health complaints from its workers. A review from The Courier-Journal found "dozens of workplace injuries; hospitalizations related to respiratory issues; unshakeable mold contamination; a bat-infested training facility; blocked emergency exit doors; and chemical exposure risks." The state has opened investigations into the plant, which is scheduled to begin production later this year. Kentucky 2's opening has been indefinitely delayed. Michael Adams, CEO of BlueOval SK, recently told WDRB, that the plant's opening date will be a market decision, but "the market is telling us that Kentucky 2 is not ready." The Bipartisan Infrastructure Law passed in 2021 created a new office within the Energy Department called the Office of Clean Energy Demonstrations (OCED), whose goal is to finance first-of-a-kind clean energy projects through private-public partnerships. One of the largest beneficiaries of the program has been Exxon Mobil. The oil major was awarded a $332 million grant from OCED to "enable the use of hydrogen in place of natural gas" at a textile and plastics facility in Baytown, Texas. At the time of the announcement, the Biden administration said the project would prevent 2.7 million metric tons of carbon emissions per year. While an interesting technology, the project did not need taxpayer support. In the same year that Exxon received this disbursement (2024), the company reported annual earnings of $33.7 billion. The project's funding was canceled on May 30 by Wright. No industry was spared from corporate welfare under the Biden administration, including condiments. In October 2024, Kraft Heinz was awarded a grant of up to $170.9 million from OCED. The award was intended to fund energy efficiency upgrades, the installation of heat pumps and electric boilers, and renewable energy technologies at 10 of the company's facilities. The grant was also rescinded on May 30. Kraft Heinz says it will continue to invest in upgrading 30 of its manufacturing facilities and will invest $3 billion over the next five years "to modernize" its domestic supply chain infrastructure. In October 2024, the LPO announced a $2.26 billion direct loan to Lithium Nevada Corp., a subsidiary of Lithium Americas Corp., to build facilities to produce lithium carbonate—a critical component of E.V. batteries. The facilities will be sited next to and get their lithium from Thacker Pass, a mine site in Nevada that is estimated to hold the largest lithium reserves in the world. The U.S. largely relies on imports to meet its lithium needs. These facilities could reduce this dependence, but that doesn't mean the loan isn't wasteful. The demand for lithium, and lithium-carbonate, is expected to significantly climb in the next few decades as the use of green technologies increases. In 2024 alone, demand for the metal grew by 30 percent. Lithium Americas expects the mine, which began construction in February, to generate $2.2 billion per year in annual earnings. Taxpayers don't need to spend billions of dollars to support a project that the market seems to think will be successful. One of the largest steel makers in the U.S. was another beneficiary of Biden-era federal funding. In 2024, Cleveland-Cliffs, which generated $19.2 billion in revenue that year, was awarded up to $575 million in grants (which are still active) from the Energy Department. One of these awards, worth up to $500 million, would implement hydrogen fuel into the steel making process and install two electric melting furnaces at the company's Middletown Works facility in Ohio. The project is expected to reduce greenhouse gas emissions at the plant by 1 million tons per year and received a $9.5 million disbursement in September 2024. A second grant worth up to $75 million would electrify Cleveland-Cliffs' facility in Butler, Pennsylvania, which produces steel for transforms, motors, and generators. This project got a $19 million disbursement in August 2024. The company says these projects are expected to be live before 2030. While Wright has canceled some of the most wasteful projects approved under Biden, federal backing for favored energy projects isn't going to end under the Trump administration. The Washington Free Beacon reports that the Energy Department is considering financing a $44 billion pipeline in Alaska. The post The 5 Worst Green Energy Projects Funded by Biden appeared first on
