EU lays out plan to end Russian gas imports

BRUSSELS - The European Union on June 17 laid out its proposal to ban Russian gas imports by the end of 2027, ending decades of dependency that Brussels has struggled to sever following Moscow's invasion of Ukraine.
The European Commission indicated in May that it would seek to prohibit Russian gas imports under new contracts as of Jan 1, 2026, and imports under existing short-term contracts by June 17, 2026.
All remaining imports would be banned by the end of 2027, the EU executive confirmed on June 17.
'Russia has repeatedly attempted to blackmail us by weaponising its energy supplies. We have taken clear steps to turn off the tap and end the era of Russian fossil fuels in Europe for good,' said EU chief Ursula von der Leyen.
The plan uses trade and energy laws – rather than sanctions – to prohibit imports from Russia.
The move aims to bypass potential opposition from Slovakia and Hungary, which are diplomatically closer to the Kremlin and still import Russian gas via pipeline.
The proposal needs a green light from the European Council representing member states and the EU parliament.
While sanctions need unanimous approval from the EU's 27 nations, trade restrictions only require the backing of a weighted majority of 15 countries.
The EU enacted a ban on Russian oil in late 2022 in response to the Ukraine invasion, and has since sought to wean itself off Russian gas as well.
Although gas imports via pipeline have fallen sharply, several European countries have increased their purchases of Russian liquefied natural gas (LNG), transported by sea.
Russia supplied 19 per cent of the bloc's gas in 2024, EU data shows, down from 45 per cent before the war.
Thirty-two billion cubic metres of the fuel entered the bloc via the TurkStream pipeline, and 20 billion cubic metres through liquefied natural gas (LNG) shipments.
A senior official said it was likely that since some companies have entered supply contracts that run beyond 2027, the ban would result in a number of arbitrations.
But on June 16, EU energy commissioner Dan Jorgensen sought to reassure importers.
'Since this will be a prohibition, a ban, the companies will not get into legal problems. This is force majeure as if it had been a sanction,' he told a press conference. AFP

"Moscow supports this stand and firmly believes that the settlement that is being sought can only be reliably achieved through diplomacy and negotiations," it said. The statement also said Moscow was waiting for the International Atomic Energy Agency to provide "as soon as possible a detailed written report ... with an objective and unvarnished assessment of damage" to Iran's nuclear facilities. The Kremlin said on Monday that Russia was ready to act as a mediator in the conflict between Israel and Iran, and its previous proposal to store Iranian uranium in Russia remained on the table. UAE warns of ‘uncalculated, reckless steps' amid Israel-Iran air war
The foreign minister of the United Arab Emirates, Sheikh Abdullah bin Zayed, has warned of "uncalculated and reckless steps" that could spill out beyond the borders of Iran and Israel, according to a statement by the foreign ministry on Tuesday. UAE President Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan and Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian discussed in a phone call the Israeli strikes on Iran, the Emirati state news agency WAM reported later in the day. The Emirati president said the Gulf country is conducting intensive talks with concerned parties to calm the situation, WAM said. He also expressed solidarity with Iran and its people during the current circumstances, it added. Abu Dhabi in recent years mended ties with Tehran after years of tension. State Dept confirms death of US citizen in Ukraine, condemns strikes

PHOTO: AFP WASHINGTON - The United States condemns an attack overnight on Kyiv, State Department spokesperson Tammy Bruce said on June 17, confirming the death of a US citizen in Ukraine. 'We are aware of last night's attack on Kyiv, which resulted in numerous casualties, including the tragic death of a US citizen. We condemn those strikes and extend our deepest condolences to the victims and to the families of all those affected,' Ms Bruce told a news briefing. Ms Bruce declined to give further details out of respect for the family. Kyiv's mayor, Mr Vitali Klitschko, early on June 18 said a US citizen had died during an overnight air attack on the city, writing on the Telegram messaging app that the 62-year-old American was pronounced dead by doctors in the city. He gave no other details. Russia flattened a section of an apartment block in Kyiv on June 17, its deadliest attack on the Ukrainian capital this year, as a huge barrage of hundreds of drones and dozens of missiles killed at least 16 people and wounded 134. Ukrainian officials declared a day of mourning on June 18 for victims of what President Volodymyr Zelenskiy described as one of the most horrific attacks on the capital during the war.
