Critical Role's Matt Mercer is giving up control of a core pillar of the crew's booming business

Critical Role's chief creative officer and longtime game master, Matthew Mercer, is making a big change at the team's nerdworld business.
When the team's fourth campaign kicks off on October 2, it won't be Mercer sitting behind the game master's screen. Instead, helming the campaign — a long-term staple of Critical Role's streaming business — will be Brennan Lee Mulligan of " Dimension 20" fame.
The two men have forged a formidable alliance, guest-starring on each other's shows while cornering a sizable chunk of the tabletop touring business. The eight-member CR crew has filled arenas from Wembley in London to megashow venues in Australia, while "Dimension 20" sold out Madison Square Garden for their January gig.
"We've been enormous fans of Brennan's for many years now, and when it came to giving both Matthew Mercer and the world of Exandria a bit of a breather, Brennan felt like the perfect storyteller to take our community somewhere entirely new," Critical Role CEO Travis Willingham said in a press release.
The show's fourth campaign will air on CR's streaming platform, Beacon, and its YouTube and Twitch channels. The campaign will also be set in a new world, not Mercer's world of Exandria, in which the first three campaigns occurred.
"What a gift, a privilege, and an honor to be invited behind the screen of Critical Role for this next epic adventure," Mulligan said in the press release. "Every collaboration we have had together has brought nothing but sheer joy, and Campaign 4 will be no exception."
CR has not announced if its fourth campaign will still use "Dungeons & Dragons," the Wizards of the Coast-owned system that the crew first started playing on stream. The CR team is now promoting "Daggerheart," its answer to the "D&D" juggernaut. Its main cast has rolled out content on-stream to promote the now sold-out game.
"We're not just turning a page — we're starting a whole new book," Marisha Ray, CR cofounder and the team's creative director, said in the press release.
Ray also teased new content in a June interview with Business Insider backstage at the crew's Melbourne show. There'll be more "fun, out-of-the-box" content airing on Beacon for CR subscribers, she said.
"We have a lot of ideas for shows and stuff that we want to do. It's really just making sure that not just the cast, but also the production team, isn't overextending itself too much," Ray told BI.
"And we really want to do more shorter-run series as well with 'Daggerheart,'" she added. "I think it lends itself very well to short-run series as well as genre-bending, and doing more things that we can experiment with."
CR has not said if all the cofounders will participate in the crew's fourth campaign, which may mark a significant departure from 10 years of streaming together.
Still, the CR cofounders are being kept busy with their two Amazon-backed animated series. "The Mighty Nein" drops on November 19 on Prime Video.
Meanwhile, "The Legend of Vox Machina," which raised more than $11 million in its initial Kickstarter funding run, has been renewed for a fifth and final season. The fourth season of "Vox Machina" is slated for 2026.

'Diaper Diplomacy': YouTube channel features AI baby versions of politicians

Move over E*TRADE Baby — a new generation of talking tykes is going viral, but instead of stock quotes, they're politicians discussing foreign policy, the economy and bickering in congressional committee hearings. Making its debut on YouTube, Diaper Diplomacy videos use artificial intelligence software to transform some of the nation's most well-known political figures, such as President Donald Trump and U.S. Senator Cory Booker (D-N.J.), into irritable infants while using the actual audio from the interviews or press conferences. With more than 67,000 subscribers and over 40 videos, the channel has garnered millions of views and a loyal following through its recreations of viral political moments, starring "babyfied" politicians of both parties. Diaper Diplomacy has recreated videos of a variety of notable figures in American politics, ranging from Trump visiting a construction site with Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell to U.S. Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez testifying before Congress, and Health Secretary Robert F. Kennedy, Jr., explaining how he discovered and placed a dead bear cub in his car - among others. "Trigger Warning (for everyone): I roast both sides," according to the channel description, "Because let's be honest —our politicians act like toddlers, and it's time someone put them back in time-out." While some videos are for "members only," the channel's creator has widely shared numerous videos as fundraisers for St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, allowing "babies to help other babies."USA TODAY has contacted the White House and Booker for comment. But who runs Diaper Diplomacy? According to a bio on "Buy Me a Coffee," Diaper Diplomacy is run by a "regular guy" who is chasing his dreams as a video creator. "[I am] trying to keep my head above water while raising three kids — including a 10-week-old who seems to think diapers grow on trees. If one of my videos gave you a laugh, I'd be super grateful for your support," the bio says. "Every little bit helps me keep making more content (and helps keep my little dude stocked up on diapers)." When recently asked by a viewer in the comments section whether the channel had become a full-time gig, the response was that it's been a "wild ride," and, hopefully, "getting close." "It's not paying all the bills yet, I've got a lot of mouths to feed and actual diapers to buy, but I think within a few months it can," was the response. "We'll see." The channel also touts video-specific merchandise, membership-only perks and access to "Diaper Doppelgänger GTP," the AI tool used to "babify" politicians on both sides of the aisle for $9.95.

Amazon cuts 110 jobs in reorganization of Wondery audio division

Amazon on Monday said it is cutting 110 roles from its audio division Wondery as part of a restructuring effort. The cuts reflect an industry shift toward producing more podcasts with video, a format that has become more popular with consumers who listen to their favorite hosts on platforms including YouTube and Spotify. The layoffs also mark the latest sign of contraction in the once burgeoning podcast industry. In June, Spotify laid of 5% of staff in its podcast division and Philadelphia-based Audacy shut down New York-based Pineapple Street Studios. 'As video podcasting has grown in popularity, we have learned that creator-led, video-integrated shows have different audience needs and require distinct discovery, growth and monetization strategies compared to audio-first, narrative series,' Steve Boom, vice president of audio, Twitch and games at Amazon, wrote in a memo to staff. Under the changes, Amazon will combine Wondery's narrative podcast studio with audio books and podcast division, Audible. Wondery staffers in its creator-led podcast studio will be part of a new organization called creator services with Amazon's talent services group. Amazon acquired Wondery in 2020 for an undisclosed amount. The Culver City-based company is known for producing podcast series including 'Dr. Death' 'American Scandal' and 'The Shrink Next Door.' Amazon said the restructuring will help it better support creators across different channels to monetize their content and simplify the process for advertisers, while also 'making the content more accessible to audiences wherever they prefer to consume it.' Wondery CEO Jen Sargent is leaving the company to pursue other opportunities, Amazon said. Ray Wang, principal analyst of Constellation Research, said the reorganization will help the company grow its ad business. 'This makes a lot of sense given how advertisers view both formats,' Wang said.

Amazon's Wondery podcast gamble ends with 110 job cuts

AMZN.O is restructuring the Wondery podcast studio by shifting its award-winning narrative podcasts such as "Business Wars" to Audible and consolidating creator-led shows into a new unit, according to a memo seen by Reuters. About 110 employees will be laid off as part of the process and many will transition to other parts of Amazon, the company said in an emailed statement on Monday. Wondery CEO Jen Sargent will also depart the company following a transition period, the memo said. Intense competition, high costs and a growing preference for creator-led video content have prompted audio streaming companies including Spotify SPOT.N to diversify their podcasts to attract more users. "As video podcasting has grown in popularity, we have learned that creator-led, video-integrated shows have different audience needs and require distinct discovery, growth and monetization strategies compared to audio-first, narrative series," Steve Boom, vice president of audio, Twitch and games at Amazon, wrote in the memo. Wondery was acquired by Amazon in 2021 and has seen podcast revenue quadruple since then as the studio expanded its slate to include video podcasts and creator-driven series, according to the memo. "This isn't just about layoffs - it's the collapse of a podcast strategy that couldn't keep pace with video-led rival platforms like YouTube and Spotify," said eMarketer analyst Grace Harmon. Under the new structure, Wondery's narrative podcast studio - home to shows such as "Dr. Death" and "American Scandal" - along with the Wondery+ subscription service, will move to Audible, the e-commerce giant's audio platform. Its creator-focused podcast team that produces shows including "Mind the Game", "New Heights", and "Armchair Expert" will join a new Creator Services group within Amazon's Talent Services division. This new team will continue to operate the creator-focused podcast studio under the Wondery brand, and Amazon said the changes will help better support creators to monetize their content across multiple channels. "Folding Wondery assets into Audible and focusing on 'creator services' could drive a pivot toward influencer-driven content that's easier to monetize," eMarketer's Harmon said.
