Twins owners halt sale of team in shocking move to keep club in the family

New York Post4 days ago
The Minnesota Twins are no longer for sale, executive chair Joe Pohlad announced Wednesday on behalf of his family.
After exploring a variety of options since publicizing the sale 10 months ago, the Pohlad family will remain the principal owner of the club and add new investors instead.
Carl Pohlad, a banking magnate and the late grandfather of Joe Pohlad, bought the Twins in 1984 for $44 million.

'For more than four decades, our family has had the privilege of owning the Minnesota Twins. This franchise has become part of our family story, as it has for our employees, our players, this community, and Twins fans everywhere,' Joe Pohlad said in his announcement. 'Over the past several months, we explored a wide range of potential investment and ownership opportunities. Our focus throughout has been on what's best for the long-term future of the Twins. We have been fully open to all possibilities.'
Pohlad said the family was in the process of adding two 'significant' limited partnership groups to bring in fresh ideas, bolster critical partnerships and shape the long-term vision of the franchise that relocated to Minnesota in 1961 after originating as the Washington Senators.

Details about the new investors were being kept private until Major League Baseball approves the transactions, Pohlad said.
Financial analysis earlier this year by Forbes valued the franchise at $1.5 billion, ranked 23rd in MLB.
Sportico ($1.7 billion) and CNBC ($1.65 billion) pegged the Twins higher.
The Pohlads hired Allen & Company, a New York-based investment bank, to direct the sale and keep inquiries confidential.

Multiple published reports identified Justin Ishbia, a part owner of the NBA's Phoenix Suns, as the front-runner.
3 This decision follows a near 10 month search for a potential buyer.

But the Chicago White Sox announced last month that Ishbia was becoming a limited partner in a deal that provides a runway for him to become controlling owner.
MLB Commissioner Rob Manfred acknowledged during the All-Star break, without naming him directly, that Ishbia's decision sidetracked the process.

'There will be a transaction,' Manfred said. 'You just need to be patient while they rework.'
The Twins are on track for their lowest attendance total in 16 seasons at Target Field, and an ownership-mandated payroll reduction last year in light of decreased regional television revenue, among other factors, has contributed to a dissatisfied customer base.
The Twins traded 10 players off their roster leading up to the July 31 deadline, furthering the frustration.
Word that the Pohlads are staying put certainly won't help the morale of Minnesota baseball fans, who've been waiting for another World Series title since 1991 and saw the investment in the roster plunge right after an American League Central title in 2023.
The Twins won a playoff series then, too, their first in 21 years.
3 The organization will now remain within possession of the Pohlad family, even after trading away 10 players prior to this past trade deadline.
'We see and hear the passion from our partners, the community, and Twins fans. That passion inspires us,' Pohlad said. 'This ownership group is committed to building a winning team and culture for this region, one that Twins fans are proud to cheer for.'
Speaking before Minnesota's game at the New York Yankees, manager Rocco Baldelli said he was happy to hear the Pohlad family would be staying involved.

'One of the main reasons why I came to this organization in the first place was because of the Pohlads and the types of owners they are and how they treat people, so just start there,' Baldelli said. 'They've been a big part of my stay here and lot of the successes that we've had here as well.'
The Twins began the season ranked 17th in player payroll at a little more than $142.8 million, but their trading spree last month lopped about $26 million from that figure.
Shortstop Carlos Correa was sent to the Houston Astros in a pure salary dump that reunited the three-time All-Star with his original team, which inherited $70 million of the more than $103 million that remained on his contract.

Pohlad, in an interview with the Minnesota Star Tribune published immediately after the announcement, said he understands the bad feelings from the fans and looks forward to helping rebuild the brand and the roster.
He said one of the investment groups is made up of Minnesotans and the other is a family based on the East Coast.
Pohlad also said the teardown of the roster was not driven by a request from ownership to further cut costs.
'It certainly set us up for more flexibility, but they were primarily baseball decisions,' Pohlad told the Star Tribune.

Clutch performances by Betts and Vesia help Dodgers sweep Padres for first time since 2023

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Los Angeles Dodgers reliever Alex Vesia gave up the tying run to the San Diego Padres in the eighth inning and was told he was out of the game. A defiant Vesia said no. He went to manager Dave Roberts and told him he wanted the ball again in the ninth if the Dodgers regained the lead. They did, on Mookie Betts' tiebreaking homer, and Vesia was back on the mound facing the Padres' top three hitters. 'It's one of those moments where you got to just trust your player,' Roberts said, 'and I trusted him.' Vesia induced pop fouls from Fernando Tatis Jr. and Luis Arraez before striking out Manny Machado to end the game. Vesia screamed in celebration as the crowd roared. The 5-4 victory extended the Dodgers' lead over the Padres in the NL West to two games. San Diego arrived in Los Angeles with a one-game lead along with a five-game winning streak. The Dodgers came in on a four-game skid. They improved to 8-2 against the Padres this season with their first three-game sweep of San Diego since May 12-13, 2023. The Padres got swept for the first time since May 20-22 at Toronto while getting outscored 14-6. 'We know as a group how good we are and last three games it's shown,' Vesia said. 'We put our heads down and we're going to keep going.' The teams face each other again starting Friday in San Diego. 'What I saw was urgency,' Roberts said. 'The way we played is what we should expect.' Vesia had been in a funk in August, with a 7.20 ERA in seven appearances and opponents hitting .353 against him. He gave up an RBI groundout to Jose Iglesias that tied the game at 4 in the eighth. Then Betts rescued the Dodgers with the 394-foot shot to left-center off Robert Suarez. It was the shortstop's 13th homer of the season and just his fifth since June. Betts had 25 in 2022 and 39 in 2023. 'Finally I did something good for the boys,' Betts said. 'I feel like I've done a decent job with the glove, but with the bat I haven't really done much.' Dogged by injuries, slumping offense and bullpen woes in recent weeks, the Dodgers saw their nine-game division lead evaporate earlier in the week. They have 1 1/2 months left to get themselves in a stronger position to open defense of their World Series championship. 'The last three days we sort of performed and not just talked about it,' Roberts said, 'so that was really good to see.' ___ AP MLB:

Alozie scores in stoppage time to give Dash 2-1 win against Gotham FC

HARRISON, N.J. (AP) — Michelle Alozie scored in stoppage time to give the Houston Dash a 2-1 win against Gotham FC in the National Women's Soccer League on Sunday. The match at Sports Illustrated Stadium was suspended in the second half for more than two hours because of thunderstorms in the area. The Dash (5-8-3) are 2-0-1 since returning from the league's nearly six-week break. Esther Gonzalez scored her league-leading 11th goal for Gotham (5-6-5) in the eighth minute from seven yards out off a pass from Gabi Portilho, who was making her first start for Gotham since April because of a hip injury. The Dash pulled even on a defensive error by Gotham in the 51st. Emily Sonnett played the ball back to Ann-Katrin Berger but it was out of the goalkeeper's reach for an own goal. It was tied until the final moments of the match when Alozie scored her first goal of the season. The Dash, coming off a 2-1 win on the road against the North Carolina Courage, had just two shots in the match. Gotham had 15. The loss snapped Gotham's four match unbeaten run (2-0-2). The team was playing without Brazilian forward Geyse, who was suspended because of a red card in last week's scoreless draw with the Washington Spirit. ___ AP soccer:

Marcus Ingvartsen, Anders Dreyer both score late to rally San Diego to 2-1 victory over Earthquakes

SAN JOSE, Calif. (AP) — Marcus Ingvartsen scored late in the second half and then notched an assist on Anders Dreyer's winner three minutes later to rally Western Conference-leading expansion side San Diego FC to a 2-1 victory over the San Jose Earthquakes on Sunday. Ingvartsen, who subbed in for Aníbal Godoy in the 64th minute, took a pass from Franco Negri in the 81st and scored for the second time in his seventh career appearance for San Diego (16-7-4). Negri entered late in the first half before earning his first assist in his 12th appearance. Negri had his only other assist in 11 appearances with Inter Miami last season. Ingvartsen and defender Christopher McVey set up Dreyer's 12th goal for the win. It was the first assist for Ingvartsen and the first in 102 career appearances for McVey. Neither team scored until Josef Martínez gave San Jose (8-11-8) the lead in the 77th minute when he scored unassisted for his 12th goal of the season and the 128th of his career. He needs five more to tie Jaime Moreno for fifth place all time. CJ dos Santos had four saves for San Diego in the first meeting between the clubs. Daniel De Sousa Britto's only save for the Earthquakes came in a scoreless first half. San Diego is now 4-0 against California clubs after already beating the defending champion Los Angeles Galaxy twice and Los Angeles FC once. San Diego has won six straight matches on the road — extending its league record for an expansion team. San Diego will host the Portland Timbers on Saturday. The Earthquakes travel to play the Houston Dynamo on Saturday. ___ AP soccer:
