HBL PSL 10: Rossouw, Nawaz make men's T20 history as Quetta rout Islamabad

Express Tribune08-05-2025

Rilee Rossouw and Hasan Nawaz made T20 history on Tuesday as they became the first pair to score centuries in the same innings of a HBL Pakistan Super League (PSL) match—and just the 10th duo ever to achieve the feat in all of men's T20 cricket.
Their explosive knocks helped Quetta Gladiators demolish Islamabad United by 109 runs, while also setting a new HBL PSL record total of 263-3.
Rossouw was the first to hit three figures, slamming 104 off 46 balls with 14 fours and six sixes. After Saud Shakeel fell for 23, Rossouw combined with the 22-year-old Nawaz to build a blistering 134-run stand off just 61 deliveries.
The South African was dismissed in the 16th over, but Nawaz kept going.
He brought up his century with a boundary off the final ball of the innings—ending unbeaten on 100 from 45 balls, with 9 sixes and 7 fours.
Their twin hundreds placed them in rare company, joining a list of only nine other duos to have pulled off this feat in men's T20 history.

Virat Kohli (109) & AB de Villiers (129*) – RCB vs Gujarat Lions, May 14, 2016 (IPL)
Alex Hales (100) & Rilee Rossouw (100*) – Rangpur Riders vs Chittagong Vikings, Jan 25, 2019 (BPL)
Jonny Bairstow (114) & David Warner (100*) – Sunrisers Hyderabad vs RCB, Mar 31, 2019 (IPL)
Sabawoon Davizi (115*) & Dylan Steyn (106) – Czech Republic vs Bulgaria, May 12, 2022
Lachlan Yamamoto-Lake (134*) & Kendel Kadowaki-Fleming (109*) – Japan vs China, Feb 15, 2024
Sai Sudharsan (103) & Shubman Gill (104) – Gujarat Titans vs CSK, May 10, 2024 (IPL)
Sanju Samson (109*) & Tilak Varma (120*) – India vs South Africa, Nov 15, 2024
Tanzid Hasan (108) & Litton Das (125*) – Dhaka Capitals vs Durbar Rajshahi, Jan 12, 2025
Quetta's 263-3 is now the highest team total in PSL history, surpassing the 262-3 posted by Multan Sultans in 2023. It also cements Quetta's place in the top two for the playoffs, giving them a second chance route to the final.
Islamabad, meanwhile, must now beat Karachi Kings on May 10 to confirm their playoff spot.
Rossouw and Nawaz didn't just win a match—they entered a hall of T20 legends.

Australia's Hazlewood does not want to miss WTC final again

LONDON: A calf injury forced Josh Hazlewood to miss being part of Australia's World Test Championship win two years ago and the fast bowler is keen to avoid a second such heartbreak as they defend their WTC title next week. Hazlewood is vying with Scott Boland to claim the last slot in Australia's pace attack for the final against South Africa at Lord's from Wednesday. South Africa name Rabada in World Test Championship final squad The 34-year-old arrived late in England, after bowling Royal Challengers Bengaluru to their maiden Indian Premier League (IPL) title on Tuesday. 'I was quite close last time,' Hazlewood, who recently recovered from a should injury, said of the 2023 final he missed. 'But I feel in much better place this time around, and I think in any format, my numbers over the last two years have been pretty good, so I've got a lot to fall back on. 'Skill wise, I still feel like I'm bowling the best I have in my career and it's just a matter of the body holding up, which it has been in the last few months.' Pakistan to receive $0.48mn despite finishing last in ICC World Test Championship cycle Hazlewood was Bengaluru's most successful bowler in the IPL but he will need to shift from 20-overs cricket in India to a different format and the different English conditions. Adjusting the length would be particularly crucial, he said. 'In the IPL games, I was probably hitting around that seven-to nine-meters in the powerplay, and not really threatening the stumps as much as you want to in Test cricket, in particular here in England,' he said. 'So, it'll just be about pushing that length and touch fuller and still getting that zip through the keeper.'

South Africa name squad for Zimbabwe Test

South Africa have unveiled their squad for the upcoming two-Test series against Zimbabwe, set to begin later this month in Bulawayo. The squad features five uncapped players, with 19-year-old batting sensation Lhuan-dre Pretorius headlining the selection following his breakout performances in domestic cricket. Joining Pretorius in line for a potential Test debut are Dewald Brevis, Lesego Senokwane, Codi Yusuf, and Prenelan Subrayen. The series does not fall under the ICC World Test Championship (WTC) 2025-27, as Zimbabwe are not part of the current cycle. It will instead serve as a developmental opportunity for head coach Shukri Conrad to test new talent and build squad depth ahead of the 2025–2027 WTC cycle. With the future in mind, senior players such as Aiden Markram, Ryan Rickelton, Tristan Stubbs, Marco Jansen and Kagiso Rabada have been rested. Veteran seamer Dane Paterson, who is not part of the squad, is also reportedly considering retirement following the recent Lord's Test. Pretorius has made an immediate impact in first-class cricket, scoring three centuries in his first five matches, including one in the domestic red-ball final. He currently averages an impressive 65.57. Brevis, who was part of the squad that toured Bangladesh last year but did not get a game, has earned his call-up through consistent domestic performances. He finished second in the run charts of the first-class season with 573 runs in 12 innings at an average of 47.75, including two centuries and two half-centuries. Brevis initially rose to prominence as the leading run-scorer in the 2022 ICC Under-19 World Cup. Kwena Maphaka, who made his debut earlier this year against Pakistan, will lead the pace attack alongside Lungi Ngidi. "Nandre has been cleared to play T20s. We'll reintroduce him gradually, starting with the shortest format, before "Nandre has been given the all-clear by the medical team to play T20s. The plan is to ease him back into the game, starting with the shortest format, and then slowly work him up to the longer formats," Conrad said. "We'll be keeping a close eye on how he handles the workload as he builds toward playing Test cricket again. "Lizaad is progressing well and is currently in the final phase of his rehabilitation from his knee surgery." Notably absent is Anrich Nortje, who was set to feature in the previous summer's Tests but declined a central contract. Nortje has not played international cricket since the 2024 T20 World Cup final and has only appeared in two IPL matches since then, having dealt with multiple injuries, including a broken toe. South Africa Test Squad for Zimbabwe Series: Temba Bavuma (captain), David Bedingham, Matthew Breetzke, Dewald Brevis, Corbin Bosch, Tony de Zorzi, Zubayr Hamza, Keshav Maharaj, Kwena Maphaka, Wiaan Mulder, Lungi Ngidi, Lhuan-dre Pretorius, Lesego Senokwane, Prenelan Subrayen, Kyle Verreynne, Codi Yusuf.

New Zealand name Walter as new coach in all formats

South African Rob Walter was appointed New Zealand coach in all formats on Friday in the wake of Gary Stead's decision to stand down after seven years in charge. Stead announced on Wednesday that he would be leaving the job of test coach at the end of the month, having already relinquished the short format roles in April. Walter, 49, was most recently coach of South Africa's One-day international and Twenty20 teams but knows New Zealand cricket well after stints in charge of provincial teams as well as his time overseeing a Black Caps "A" tour of India in 2022. "The Black Caps have been a successful and highly-regarded team on the world scene for some time now and it's a real privilege to be given the chance to add to that," Walter said in a New Zealand Cricket statement. "It's an amazing opportunity to work with such a talented group of players and support staff through a period of time in which so many global events, as well as massive bilateral series, will be contested." Walter, who led South Africa to the semi-finals of the 2023 World Cup and final of last year's Twenty20 World Cup, is contracted through to the end of the 2028 World Cup, which New Zealand is co-hosting with Australia. "Rob is a world-class coach with an outstanding pedigree," said NZC chief executive Scott Weenink. "His success in New Zealand's domestic game, combined with his recent achievements on the global stage with South Africa, makes him the ideal candidate to lead the Black Caps." New Zealand's next international matches come in July at the start of their tour of Zimbabwe, where they will play two tests and a Twenty20 tri-series also involving South Africa.
