R. Kelly Seeks Release From Prison, Claiming Officers Tried to Have Him Killed by Fellow Inmate

R. Kelly, who is currently serving a 30-year prison sentence, is seeking to be released from prison, claiming jail officials attempted to solicit a fellow inmate to kill him. In a court filing on Tuesday, the disgraced R&B star asked a judge to be released from the Federal Correctional Institution in Butner, North Carolina. He's serving multiple decades after being convicted in two separate criminal cases for several sex crimes. More from The Hollywood Reporter 'Shrinking' Actress and Music Supervisor Christa Miller on Pulling the Strings Behind the Scenes John Cusack, Nancy Sinatra, Ronnie Wood and More Pay Tribute to Brian Wilson: "The Maestro Has Passed" Sabrina Carpenter Announces New Album 'Man's Best Friend' Kelly claims a prison officer 'illegally accessed and stole a series of phone calls and emails' between the former musician and a woman and his attorney, according to the motion. He also alleges a former cellmate stole 'attorney-client correspondence' and shared the letters with prosecutors ahead of his trial in New York. To stop this information from being released, Kelly alleges that prison officials tried to have him killed. In the filing, Kelly alleges that a fellow inmate, a member of the Aryan Brotherhood gang, came up to him and 'disclosed that he was sent to FCI Butner by BOP officials who directed him to murder Mr. Kelly.' When he failed to go through with it, the filing claims the Aryan Brotherhood member also 'had his own life threatened.' Kelly's attorney, Beau Brindle, added in a statement shared with The Hollywood Reporter, 'R. Kelly's life is being threatened because of his decision to stand up and expose the violation of his constitutional rights made by corrupt prosecutors who use Bureau of Prisons officers and cooperating witnesses to facilitate these violations.' 'Once it became clear that he was uncovering evidence of the corruption underlying the charges in his federal cases, a white supremacist member of the Aryan Brotherhood was sent to murder him,' the statement continued. 'We are filing our motion to make sure that they cannot get away with it.' In response, Billboard reported that prosecutors filed their own documents asking the judge to strike Kelly's filing. 'Robert Kelly is a serial sexual predator,' prosecutors wrote in their filing. 'He even documented his sexual abuse of children on film — creating child pornography — such that the abuse would live on in perpetuity. That abuse and harassment continues with defendant's latest filing.' Kelly was convicted of racketeering and sex trafficking in New York in 2021 and found guilty of child pornography and enticing minors for sex in Chicago in 2022. He was sentenced to 30 years in prison for the New York case, and to 20 years for the Chicago case, with both sentences overlapping. Fancy Swiss Chocolatier Läderach Is Bringing ‘FrischSchoggi' to Washington State

Seattle-area malls are going to be upgrading their chocolate offerings this summer, as the Swiss brand Läderach is set to open two stores, one in Westfield Southcenter next month, and one in Bellevue Square in August. These will be the first Läderach locations in Washington State; the chain already has locations across the country, including a flagship store in New York. So, what's Läderach? The thing the brand is most famous for, according to the press release we got, is 'FrischSchoggi,' a.k.a. fresh chocolate. You order at the counter by weight, and a Läderach chocolatier breaks pieces of chocolate off of slabs. The stores will also have the kinds of thing you'd expect at a chocolate shop, including truffles, bars, popcorn, and so on. Everything comes from Läderach's production facilities in Switzerland. Now on to more news you should know: Rainier Beer may not be brewed in Seattle anymore, but the brand is still trying to keep a foot on the ground here with R-Day, a free music festival in Georgetown that serves as a 'thank you letter' to Seattle, according to the brand. This year R-Day lands on September 6, and will be headlined by Mudhoney. There will also be food courtesy of the Dubsea Fish Sticks truck, plus (of course) Rainier Beer and cocktails using Rainier gin. Go here for more info. After a $2.5 million renovation, the cafe at the Museum of Pop Culture has reopened. The new restaurant, called The Lounge, features food from new head chef Athan Pixler. According to a press release, Pixler's menu will include items like tempura squash blossoms, dry-aged salmon with dashi, and a koji-aged burger with bone marrow butter. This follows a trend of museums around town stepping their dining game up; a couple years ago acclaimed tapas restaurant MariPili took over the cafe at the Frey. Seattle's most famous market is throwing its annual big fundraising dinner on August 16. The Sunset Supper, which brings together 100 restaurants and producers for a party at the market, regularly raises hundreds of thousands for the Pike Place Market Foundation, a nonprofit that supports the market and provides a variety of social services in the neighborhood. Tickets are $250; to purchase and for more information, go here. See More: Coming Attractions Seattle Restaurant News

Popular fast-food burger chain aims major comeback amid closures

Nothing is worse than staying up late and getting hungry in the middle of the night, but having nearly no options available. Luckily, many fast-food restaurants are open late or even 24 hours, and most have value meals that make buying food too tempting to pass up. Don't miss the move: Subscribe to TheStreet's free daily newsletter However, not many have an entire menu dedicated to late-night munchies. Jack in the Box introduced the first Munchie Meal in 2013 as part of its late-night menu expansion. This offering provided customers with more options packed into a value meal for an affordable price. Related: McDonald's brings back unexpected breakfast item after 6 years This addition also encouraged customers to purchase late-night meals at their local Jack in the Box rather than with the competition, aiming to increase sales during extended hours. Since its debut, the fast-food chain has launched multiple versions of the Munchie Meal and collaborations with top celebrities, including Ice Cube and Snoop Dogg. Jack in the Box (JACK) has partnered with musical artist T-Pain to launch the latest Munchie Meal collaboration. The new T-Pain Munchie Meal includes a Burg-R-Tater Melt or Chick-N-Tater Melt, a taco, medium seasoned curly fries, a Stuffed Cookie, and a small drink. This latest addition also comes with an exclusive collector's edition T-Pain air freshener. If none of the selected items appeal to your taste buds, customers can customize their own with the Build Your Own Munchie Meal, where they can choose any entrée, two sides, and a drink. The T-Pain Munchie Meal is available until July 27 at all Jack in the Box restaurants nationwide and can be ordered via the Jack app or online through the Jack in the Box website. Jack in the Box and T-Pain are rolling out "Jack Zone Wars," a Fortnite gaming experience exclusively made for this collaboration and dedicated to all gamers. Players who order a Munchie Meal on the Jack app can unlock special weapons that will give them an advantage in the game. T-Pain will also host a live-streamed Fortnite event on June 26 to join players. Jack in the Box unveiled its multi-faceted "Jack on Track" plan in April to improve its long-term financial performance by closing around 150 to 200 underperforming restaurants. "Our actions today focus on three main areas: addressing our balance sheet to accelerate cash flow and pay down debt, while preserving growth-oriented capital investments related to technology and restaurant reimage; closing underperforming restaurants to position ourselves for consistent net unit growth and competitive unit economics; and, an overall return to simplicity for the Jack in the Box business model and investor story," said Jack in the Box CEO Lance Tucker in the announcement. Jack in the Box is doing everything it can to return the business to growth, and launching a Munchie Meal that encourages customer engagement is a step closer to helping it regain its lost market share.
