AFI Awards honor LA firefighters, films from "Brutalist' to "Wicked"
But the biggest applause of the star-studded event — rescheduled from Jan. 10 due to the disastrous Los Angeles wildfires — was for a firefighter.
The A-list crowd in the Los Angeles Four Seasons hotel ballroom gave a sustained standing ovation for Tim Larson, a Los Angeles firefighter stationed in fire-ravaged Pacific Palisades.
"No words can wipe the tears from this town," AFI President and CEO Bob Gazzale said during opening remarks before introducing the uniformed Larson.
Gazzale urged the annual gathering of the year's best TV and filmmakers to continue entertaining "because we need that now more than ever."

The audience included stars from Oscar contending movies "Wicked," "A Complete Unknown," "The Brutalist," "Sing Sing," "Conclave," "A Real Pain" and "Emilia Pérez." Among them were Ariana Grande, Cynthia Erivo, Michelle Yeoh, Jeff Goldblum, Edward Norton, Boyd Holbrook, Adrien Brody, Colman Domingo, Ralph Fiennes, Jesse Eisenberg, Adriana Paz and Zoe Saldaña.
Stars from the honored TV shows included Kristen Bell, Adam Brody ("Nobody Wants This"), Colin Farrell, Cristin Milioti ("The Penguin"), Mark Indelicato ("Hacks"), Jodie Foster, Kali Reis ("True Detective: Night Country"), Jeremy Allen White, Ayo Edebiri ("The Bear") and Hiroyuki Sanada ("Shogun").
Directors included Sean Baker ("Anora"), Denis Villeneuve ("Dune: Part Two"), RaMell Ross ("Nickel Boys"), and Edward Berger ("Conclave").
Harrison Ford, who received an AFI Lifetime Achievement Award in 2000, earned an early standing ovation following Larson. Ford attended on behalf of the AppleTV+ comedy "Shrinking," with co-stars Jason Segel and Jessica Williams leading the applause.
Oscar-nominated "Emilia Pérez" star Karla Sofía Gascón, who is embroiled in a PR crisis over past social media posts, did not attend the event. However, Gascón received praise during the "Emilia Pérez" best picture testimonial, which stated that the "provocative thriller" featured "powder keg performances from Zoe Saldaña, Karla Sofía Gascón and Selena Gomez — a true triple threat of today's top talent."
The ceremony opened and closed with tributes to David Lynch, who died last month at age 78. The celebration began with a video of the "Twin Peaks" director talking about his love of the AFI. The video ended with a title card stating, 'We love you too, David. And always will.'
AFI Founding Director George Stevens Jr. closed the event with a benediction praising Lynch "and the mystical beauty we found in living his dreams."
"We leave this ceremony with David in our hearts," said Stevens Jr. "Let us dedicate ourselves to restoring our devastated movie capital."

‘Kiss of the Spider Woman': Everything to know about Jennifer Lopez's return to the Oscar race as new trailer drops
Jennifer Lopez is posed to hustle her way back into the awards race in October. That's when her Sundance-premiering movie musical, Kiss of the Spider Woman, opens to the general public courtesy of Roadside Attractions. A new trailer for the film landed on the world wide web today, offering a longer look at the Bill Condon-directed feature than the teaser that was released earlier in the summer. Based on the 1993 Broadway musical that was based on Manuel Puig's 1976 novel and its 1985 feature Oscar-winning film adaptation, the new Spider Woman earned strong reviews on the festival circuit and awards Lopez a showcase role tailor-made for Oscar season. First things first: no, this isn't an Into the Spider-Verse spin-off. Set in Brazil during the South American country's mid-20th century military dictatorship period, Spider Woman largely unfolds in a jail cell occupied by revolutionary Valentin Arregui (played by Diego Luna) and gay cinephile Luis Molina (Tonatiuh). Unbeknownst to Valentin, Luis has been offered an early release if he plays informant for the ruling junta. Austin Butler 'almost cracked' a rib after headbutt from costar in fight scene
One of Austin Butler's latest fight scenes may have gotten a little too real. In a conversation with Men's Health, the Oscar-nominated "Elvis" star, 34, revealed he "almost cracked" his rib shooting a sequence in his new movie "Caught Stealing." The moment came during a scene where Butler's character is beaten up by two Russians, and he encouraged one of the actors, Nikita Kukushkin, not to hold back to ensure it looked authentic. "When he was kicking me, he didn't want to kick me very hard," Butler explained. "He felt bad. I kept telling him, 'Just kick me. Kick me harder.' I'd watch it back, and I was like, 'It doesn't look real.' So he starts really laying into me and kicking me hard." Butler's costar soon took the scene in a new direction. "He had this idea of headbutting me in the side, like a little ram or something," Butler said. "He did it so hard it almost cracked my rib with his head. I was very impressed." "For the most part, I'd just say, 'Yeah, let's go,'" Butler told Men's Health. "I'll just deal with the bruises later." While Butler said he only "almost" cracked a rib in this instance, in 2024, the actor told Variety he actually did break a rib working on his Apple TV+ series "Masters of the Air." "There was a fight scene and yeah, my rib cracked," he told Variety at the time. "It hurt and then I had to keep fighting. And it hurts for a long time after because every time you breathe, you feel your ribs. But it could have been worse." 'Dune: Part 2' sadistic siblings Austin Butler and Dave Bautista loved hating each other Butler stars in "Caught Stealing" opposite Zoë Kravitz as a man who "finds himself caught in the middle of a motley crew of threatening gangsters" after his neighbor, played by Matt Smith, asks him to take care of his cat, per the studio's synopsis. The Darren Aronofsky movie continues a busy few years for the former Nickelodeon star, who earned an Oscar nomination in 2023 for his performance as Elvis Presley in "Elvis." In 2022, Butler told British GQ that after he finished shooting the musical biopic, he was hospitalized and bedridden for a week with a virus. "I woke up at four in the morning with excruciating pain, and I was rushed to (the) hospital," he said, adding, "My body just started shutting down the day after I finished 'Elvis.'" In his interview with Men's Health, Butler also revealed he experienced temporary blindness and lost his vision for several minutes while on a plane on his way to shoot the film "The Bikeriders." He said he blamed the incident on sleep deprivation.
