AFI Awards honor LA firefighters, films from "Brutalist' to "Wicked"
LOS ANGELES — The American Film Institute honored the 10 best films and 11 best TV shows of 2024 at the AFI Awards on Thursday.
But the biggest applause of the star-studded event — rescheduled from Jan. 10 due to the disastrous Los Angeles wildfires — was for a firefighter.
The A-list crowd in the Los Angeles Four Seasons hotel ballroom gave a sustained standing ovation for Tim Larson, a Los Angeles firefighter stationed in fire-ravaged Pacific Palisades.
"No words can wipe the tears from this town," AFI President and CEO Bob Gazzale said during opening remarks before introducing the uniformed Larson.
Gazzale urged the annual gathering of the year's best TV and filmmakers to continue entertaining "because we need that now more than ever."

The audience included stars from Oscar contending movies "Wicked," "A Complete Unknown," "The Brutalist," "Sing Sing," "Conclave," "A Real Pain" and "Emilia Pérez." Among them were Ariana Grande, Cynthia Erivo, Michelle Yeoh, Jeff Goldblum, Edward Norton, Boyd Holbrook, Adrien Brody, Colman Domingo, Ralph Fiennes, Jesse Eisenberg, Adriana Paz and Zoe Saldaña.
Stars from the honored TV shows included Kristen Bell, Adam Brody ("Nobody Wants This"), Colin Farrell, Cristin Milioti ("The Penguin"), Mark Indelicato ("Hacks"), Jodie Foster, Kali Reis ("True Detective: Night Country"), Jeremy Allen White, Ayo Edebiri ("The Bear") and Hiroyuki Sanada ("Shogun").
Directors included Sean Baker ("Anora"), Denis Villeneuve ("Dune: Part Two"), RaMell Ross ("Nickel Boys"), and Edward Berger ("Conclave").
Harrison Ford, who received an AFI Lifetime Achievement Award in 2000, earned an early standing ovation following Larson. Ford attended on behalf of the AppleTV+ comedy "Shrinking," with co-stars Jason Segel and Jessica Williams leading the applause.
Oscar-nominated "Emilia Pérez" star Karla Sofía Gascón, who is embroiled in a PR crisis over past social media posts, did not attend the event. However, Gascón received praise during the "Emilia Pérez" best picture testimonial, which stated that the "provocative thriller" featured "powder keg performances from Zoe Saldaña, Karla Sofía Gascón and Selena Gomez — a true triple threat of today's top talent."
The ceremony opened and closed with tributes to David Lynch, who died last month at age 78. The celebration began with a video of the "Twin Peaks" director talking about his love of the AFI. The video ended with a title card stating, 'We love you too, David. And always will.'
AFI Founding Director George Stevens Jr. closed the event with a benediction praising Lynch "and the mystical beauty we found in living his dreams."
"We leave this ceremony with David in our hearts," said Stevens Jr. "Let us dedicate ourselves to restoring our devastated movie capital."

Inside the first-of-its-kind, ‘luxury' college campus tour — and why it costs a mind-bending $300K for four days
These high schoolers are getting a lesson in luxury. College hopefuls will soon be able to tour universities like rockstars — zipping between campuses on a private jet, crashing in five-star hotels, and wining and dining their way to a decision. For a mind-boggling, all-inclusive $300,000, the college admissions consultancy group IvyWise will whisk away seven students — each with a parent in tow — on an opulent, first-of-its-kind tour of seven elite universities this fall. The four-day jaunt costs about as much as four years of tuiton at an Ivy League college. The maiden 'Elevation Experience' begins Oct. 13 in the Big Apple, where the families will visit New York and Columbia universities, before the parents enjoy dinner at either Casa Cipriani or Zero Bond. Students, meanwhile, will be treated to Samoa Sundaes at the celebrity hotspot Corner Store, according to IvyWise's CEO and founder, Dr. Kat Cohen. 5 Families will fly on a private Gulfstream G650 jet to each campus included in IvyWise's 'Elevation Experience' tour this fall. ETA Jets But that's just the beginning. Attendees will be chauffeured to the Four Seasons in Tribeca, where they'll stay for a night before boarding a private Gulfstream G650 jet that will whisk them to Princeton University in New Jersey — followed by a skip and a jump to Yale in New Haven, CT. Before the end of Day 2, the jet will arrive in Beantown, where the families will spend the next two nights at another Four Seasons hotel between tours of Boston's Massachusetts Institute of Technology and Harvard University, and dinner at ritzy Deuxave. 5 The Massachusetts Institute of Technology is one of seven university campuses the students will visit during the tour. ETA Jets 'So you're getting advice from an expert the entire time,' said Cohen – including before the trip, when IvyWise's staff will meet with students to create personalized reports. This is as close as we're going to get a Barbie-MaXXXine crossover. Mia Goth is joining the new Ryan Gosling-powered Star Wars installment, Starfighter, taking over the role originally offered Anora Oscar winner Mikey Madison. The casting coup is the latest scrap of news about the anticipated project, which will be helmed by Shawn Levy and which had its coming-out party at Star Wars Celebration in April 2025. Levy says that Starfighter will cover new territory in franchise storytelling and won't feature any of the major characters from prior releases. 'This is a standalone. It's not a prequel, not sequel. It's a new adventure. It's set in a period of time that we haven't seen explored yet,' the filmmaker said. 'The reality is that this script is just so good. It has such a great story with great and original characters,' said Gosling. 'It's filled with so much heart and adventure, and there just really is not a more perfect filmmaker for this particular story than Shawn.' Starfighter the movie is not related to the 2001 video game of the same name from LucasArts that was set on the planet of Naboo during the time period of Star Wars: The Phantom Menace. Starfighter takes place about five years after the events of the last Star Wars feature, 2019's Rise of Skywalker. "That rumor is true," Levy said as he brought out his star to the stage to massive cheers. "The rumors are true." According to Variety, Mikey Madison was initially offered the female lead one of the baddies hunting down Gosling and his young sidekick. Madion reportedly turned down the role due to a pay dispute. It was confirmed that Mia Goth had accepted the role in June 2025. The news was initially reported by The InSneider. No other casting has been announced. Starfighter is slated to begin production in fall 2025 in England. Starfighter is scheduled to open May 28, 2027.
