Springbok Bolters: Top four uncapped players turning heads this season
The Springboks are blessed a wealth of quality among its core group of players. But when Rassie Erasmus decides to cast his net wider, there won't be a lack of riches in the talent-pool at his disposal because South Africa is blessed when it comes to the next generation of professional players.
With that in mind, we bring you the top four best rookies on Rassie Erasmus' radar for potential Springbok selection in the near future. Position: Centre/Wing
Age: 21
Hartzenberg has been a standout performer for the Stormers, showcasing his versatility by excelling both on the wing and at outside centre. His impressive speed and agility have made him a key figure in the team's backline. A standout player who reach 50 caps for the Stormers this season, Hartzenberg now has experience on his side, and could serve as very good utility back for Rassie Erasmus' Springboks. Position: Loosehead prop
Age: 23
Ntlabakanye has been a dominant force in the scrums for the Lions, earning recognition as one of the top loosehead props in the country. His powerful performances have made him a standout in the URC and he is widely regarded as one of the best in his position. A 145kg giant, his physical dimensions set him apart from the pack, and it would be interesting to see whether the Springbok conditioning coaches could see an opportunity to mould the youngster into an even more formidable weapon in the front row. Position: Wing/Fullback
Age: 23
Makhaza has been a revelation in the 2025 Varsity Cup, earning both Player of the Year and Backline Player of the Year honors. His remarkable performance in the final, scoring 32 points, was instrumental in the Ikey Tigers' victory. His move to the Cheetahs for the Currie Cup season marks a significant step in his professional career. The Varsity Cup superstar was a bit of a bolter in the squad selection, but he fully deserves his Springbok call-up, and will add another exciting option on the wing. Position: Loose forward
Age: 22
Another rising star in South African rugby, the dynamic loose forward is in the mould of Kwagga Smith, and it stands to reason that the Springboks will be keen to have a closer look at him. Du Plessis had a breakout season in the 2024 Currie Cup, earning the Premier Division Player of the Year award. His dynamic performances caught the attention of national selectors, leading to his inclusion in a Springbok alignment camp. Despite limited minutes for the Lions the URC this season, his domestic form has positioned him as a strong candidate for future national duties.

Rankings: Horror scenario where Springboks could fall to SIXTH
The Rugby Championship could not have got off to worse start for the Springboks as they were shocked by the Wallabies in a 38-22 defeat that cost them the No 1 spot in the world rankings. As a result of the Springboks' horror 38-22 defeat to Australia, they lost a whopping three rankings points and plunged to third place, while the All Blacks' good win over Argentina saw them gain 0.45 rankings points to leapfrog to the summit There is still an expectation that the Springboks will bounce back against Australia in Cape Town this Saturday, but the fact remains: if they suffer another defeat by more than 15 points – a rankings nightmare would materialise. A heavy defeat to the Wallabies – a team still ranked sixth in the world – could see the Springboks lose a further 2.65 rankings points, and that would see them plummet to sixth spot below England. Such a fall from grace would be almost unthinkable, but so was the scoreline last weekend. If the Springboks were to suffer a defeat of less than 15 points, they would manage to hang onto third spot in the rankings, but they'd lose 1.77 ranking points and only just be marginally ahead of France and England. That's the horror scenario, but by contrast, if the Springboks secure a big win over Australia by more than 15 points, they can jump back to second place ahead of Ireland. Those permutations are based on the likelihood of New Zealand claiming victory against Argentina on Saturday night. Even so, ultimately the only way the All Blacks could lose top spot is if they somehow lost by more than 15 points to the Pumas while the Springboks beat Australia. 1 (↑2) New Zealand 92.51 2 (↑3) Ireland 89.83 3 (↓1) South Africa 89.78 (-3.00) 4 France 87.82 5 England 87.64 6 Australia 85.08 (+3.00) 7 Argentina 81.60 8 Scotland 81.57 9 Fiji 80.50 10 Italy 77.77 Let us know by leaving a comment below, or send a WhatsApp to 060 011 0211. For his first fight against Strickland at UFC 297, where he claimed the title, he is reported to have earned R7.6 million. Kaizer Chiefs assistant coach Khalil Ben Youssef had confirmed that head coach Nasreddine Nabi will return to the club in the coming days. The 60-year-old left camp earlier this month to be with his wife in Tunisia. He has since missed Amakhosi's opening three Betway Premiership matches without conceding a single goal. In Nabi's absence, the team has also revealed three new signings. Etiosa Ighodaro, Luke Baartman and Asanele Velebayo were unveiled as Kaizer Chiefs players this week but the trio did not feature in Amakhosi's 1-0 win over Richards Bay on Tuesday. Ben Youssef told the media this week that Nasreddine Nabi should return to South Africa before the Mamelodi Sundowns clash. 'Coach Nabi will be with us this week to prepare for the game against Sundowns,' he said. In terms of the team's performance on Tuesday, Ben Youssef praised his defence. 'I think that's the most important thing for us, we are so happy about our defence [three games, 0 conceded],' he said. 'We discussed about even in the cup about our defence. We need to be more strong; we can't accept that one of the biggest teams in South Africa concedes more goals.' With Nabi returning to Kaizer Chiefs, it remains to be seen if the Glamour Boys will maintain the form. The Tunisian coach led Amakhosi to their first cup win in 10 years, but his side finished ninth in the Betway Premiership. Let us know by leaving a comment below, or send a WhatsApp to 060 011 0211.
