Skiing standout Marcel Hirscher eyes the Olympic season in return from injury and retirement
The record eight-time overall World Cup champion had his return last season from five years of retirement cut short when he was injured in December with a torn ACL in his left knee after a fall in training.
'Rehab was going on quite well and now we are back in athletic training. This is super fun, being back a professional athlete again,' Hirscher said on Instagram on Wednesday.
'FIS (the International Ski and Snowboard Federation) made a decision that I am allowed to take my 17 starts from last year's season into the upcoming season. So that means I'm ready for another season ski racing. And I think now you can call it a comeback,' Hirscher added.
While the 36-year-old Hirscher competed for Austria in his earlier career, he came back representing the Netherlands. He has an Austrian father and a Dutch mother. That means that if he decides to compete in the Olympics next year, he won't have to qualify for one of the four starting spots that the powerful Austrian team has for each race. Whereas the Netherlands doesn't have any other skiers of Hirscher's caliber.
The wild card rule allows former champions to return to the World Cup without the necessary qualifying points.
Lindsey Vonn also returned under the wild card rule last season with a new titanium knee and plans on competing in the Feb. 6-22 Olympics.
After the injury and ensuing surgery, Hirscher completed 1,000 hours of rehab.
'In the end, two questions remained: What do I want from life? What does life want from me?' Hirscher said. 'Even in difficult moments, my answer never changed: I want to race again.'
Hirscher plans to return to snow training in September.
'At the moment, I'm shifting from the rehabilitation phase into full athlete mode, with more extensive sessions and higher intensity,' Hirscher said. 'Training hard again is bringing me a lot of joy. It's shaping up to be a very athletic summer.'
Hirscher's 67 World Cup wins put him second on the all-time men's list behind only Ingemar Stenmark's 86 victories. He also won two Olympic golds, in combined and giant slalom at the 2018 Pyeongchang Games; plus a silver in slalom at the 2014 Sochi Games.

Perks: Volunteers will get a World Cup uniform, a certificate and food and refreshments during shifts. How it works: Applications are open for people over 18. English fluency is required. Fever's Sophie Cunningham says Mercury put 'more' physicality on Caitlin Clark
Sophie Cunningham of the Indiana Fever wasted no time using her new podcast "Show Me Something'' to defend teammate Caitlin Clark. Cunningham, formerly of the Phoenix Mercury, had some scathing words for Clark's critics on the debut episode on July 30. In a discussion with the podcast's co-host and reality TV personality West Wilson, Cunningham said she gets triggered when she hears people dispute that Clark is the driving force behind the WNBA's rise in popularity. "It literally p----s me off when people are like, 'She's not the face of the league,'' Cunningham said. "What?" she said. "No, there's really good, well-known people in our league. I'm not discrediting them. We have a lot of bad asses in our league. Hell yeah to that. I'm all for that. But when people try to argue that she's not the face of our league, or that they would be where they're at without her, you're dumb as s---." Clark was drafted No. 1 overall by Indiana in the 2024 draft. She joined the league after she led Iowa to two straight national championship appearances and broke Hall of Famer Pete Maravich's 54-year all-time college scoring record. She helped drive television ratings for college women's games and the WNBA. After six years with the Mercury, Cunningham was traded to the Fever (15-12) in a four-team deal on Feb. 2. That deal brought in the Mercury's All-Stars Satou Sabally from the Dallas Wings and Alyssa Thomas from the Connecticut Sun. Cunningham also said Clark, who has been sidelined with a groin injury, receives too much physicality from her opponents. She even spoke candidly about her former team, the Mercury, taking it too far with Clark last season. "You have seen players in our league try to toughen up Caitlin," Cunningham said. "Even when I wasn't on her team, I know the talks that the (Phoenix Mercury) had in the locker room of, like, 'We're going to show her what the W really is.' You know what I mean? And, I get it to a certain extent, and every rookie coming into the league, that's how you're going to treat them. But there's just more for her. "It's her second year, and now being on her team and seeing it, I'm like, 'What are people doing?' Actually, it's just too much, too much. I'm over it, and if I'm saying it's too much, then it's probably too much." Cunningham has gained a reputation as Clark's toughest enforcer after a dust-up with Jayce Sheldon of the Connecticut Suns after Sheldon pushed Clark to the floor during a heated exchange earlier in the game. During the fourth quarter's final minute, Cunningham grabbed Sheldon's head as she went up for a fast-break layup. Cunningham and Sheldon were ejected. Cunningham said that the incident caused her social media followers to rise from 200,000 on TikTok and 350,000 on Instagram to over one million on each platform overnight. Cunningham also called Clark a "goofy" personality away from the court, and likened Clark as her "little cousin." Cunningham scored 12 points on 4-of-6 shooting off the bench in the Fever's 107-101 home win over the league's third-place Mercury (16-10) on July 30. Messi could join Argentina for two matches in September if hamstring holds up
Lionel Messi and his new Inter Miami teammate Rodrigo De Paul have been called up by the Argentine national team for their final two World Cup qualifying matches in early September. Argentina, the defending World Cup champions, has already qualified for the 2026 World Cup to be co-hosted by the United States, Canada and Mexico. Messi, 38, has not yet declared he will play in the World Cup. But his upcoming reunion with the national team could be noteworthy. Watch MLS games all season long on Apple TV Argentina will host Venezuela on Sept. 4 at Mâs Monumental in Buenos Aires, which could be Messi's last match in his beloved home country for the foreseeable future. Argentina will visit Ecuador on Sept. 9. It's unclear whether Argentina will host any matches next year in the leadup to the World Cup, held June 11, 2026 to July 19, 2026. Messi will turn 39 years old on June 24, 2026. Messi has been eager to return from a recent right hamstring injury. He scored a goal with an assist in Inter Miami's last match against L.A. Galaxy, a 3-1 win on Aug. 16, but was seen stretching his hamstring at multiple points in his appearance off the bench in the second half. 'He clearly wasn't 100% comfortable,' Inter Miami coach Javier Mascherano said of Messi after the match. 'Now, the reality is that as the minutes went by, he loosened up a little bit more. We'll have to see how he ended up in terms of fatigue.' Messi and De Paul, who joined Inter Miami last month, were listed on a preliminary roster by Argentine coach Lionel Scaloni on Monday, Aug. 18. The Inter Miami teammates have at least three matches to play before they rejoin the national team. Inter Miami will host Tigres on Aug. 20 in the Leagues Cup quarterfinals. Inter Miami also has two regular season matches: at D.C. United on Aug. 23, and home against the Chicago Fire on Aug. 30. If Inter Miami advances in the Leagues Cup, the semifinals would be played on Aug. 26 or 27, while the final and third-place matches are set for Aug. 31. Messi was scoreless with Argentina in two matches earlier this year: He came off the bench in a 1-0 road win against Chile on June 5, and played 78 minutes in a 1-1 draw against Colombia on June 10. The last time Messi scored with Argentina, he had a hat trick and two assists in a 6-0 victory over Bolivia on Oct. 15, 2024.
