Jailed Turkish opponent ‘begs' Berlin to lift ban on fighter jet sale

Times23-04-2025

The jailed Turkish opposition leader Ekrem Imamoglu has 'begged' Germany to sell Eurofighter Typhoon jets to Ankara after Berlin halted the sale in protest at his arrest.
Imamoglu, the mayor of Istanbul, is the focus of domestic opposition to President Erdogan. He was detained last month on what were widely regarded as bogus charges of corruption and support for terrorism intended to foil a potential presidential run.
German media reported that Berlin subsequently suspended the sale of the jets, which are jointly manufactured by companies in Britain, Germany, Italy, and Spain.
The Turkish armed forces have been looking to buy 40 new Eurofighter aircraft after the US declined to sell its next-generation F-35 jets. While Spain and Britain are reportedly negotiating a sale, export decisions

Libyan entities dispute financial transfer allegations

Libyan organisations dispute money transfer reports Two Libyan organisations have rejected claims published by an American digital publication, stating they will pursue legal action over what they describe as inaccurate reporting. The Tebyan platform, which is connected to Libya's Government of National Unity, and Libyan Airlines have both issued statements disputing assertions made by the Washington Eye website concerning alleged financial transfers by Libyan officials. Tebyan said the Washington Eye's report about fund transfers by Libyan authorities lacked reliable sources. The platform described the American outlet as a recently established entity operating within what it called a 'regional media disinformation network' targeting Libya's stability. According to Tebyan's statement, the report was attributed to what it claimed was a fictitious individual. Libyan Airlines separately disputed specific claims about one of its flights, describing the Washington Eye's coverage as containing false information. The carrier said assertions about flight LN203 were inaccurate. The airline stated that the flight in question operated between Alexandria Airport and Mitiga Airport, differing from the publication's claim that it travelled from Mitiga to Istanbul. Libyan Airlines described itself as a commercial carrier separate from political matters, saying it was surprised to be involved in political disputes. Both organisations said they reserved the right to take legal action against media outlets that published or promoted the disputed information without verification. The Washington Eye had cited unnamed Turkish sources claiming that Abdul Hamid Dabaiba, head of the Government of National Unity, personally oversaw the transfer of more than $400 million to Turkey over the past week. The website alleged these transfers occurred through regular Libyan flights operated by individuals connected to Dabaiba, coinciding with Libya's political instability and increased scrutiny of such operations. The Government of National Unity and Dabaiba's office have not issued separate responses to the allegations.

Libya seeks partnerships for energy sector growth

Libya's Minister for Oil and Gas, Khalifa Abdul-Sadiq, has recently urged major companies to get their applications in and invest safely in Libya's oil sector. In a speech at the Natural Resources Summit over in Istanbul, Abdul-Sadiq called on big oil firms to transfer modern technology to Libya to bump up production rates and replace the oil and gas that's been taken out of the reserves. He also asked them to get cracking on increasing refining capacity with the aim of Libya being self-sufficient in fuels and petroleum products, and to put money into renewable energy to help with electricity generation. This, in turn, would free up more gas to flog off to the global market. During a panel discussion, chaired by the Turkish Minister of Energy and attended by a number of energy and natural resources ministers, the minister discussed investment opportunities in Libya, the goals of his ministry and the National Oil Corporation (NOC) to increase production capacity and expand exploration activity to support reserves, the progress of the public bidding round launched by the NOC at the start of March, and the promotional tours held in Houston and London, the most recent of which was in Istanbul.

Argentina lifts the shroud on Nazi war criminals it sheltered

He arrived in Argentina on a steamship in 1949 with a Red Cross refugee passport, using the pseudonym Helmut Gregor. Seven years later, the impeccably dressed German with a distinctive gap-toothed smile felt comfortable enough to ask the local police to kindly use his real surname on his identity card: he then became known as José Mengele. Documents detailing that request were part of hundreds released online by the Argentinian government on Monday, many of which confirmed a long-known dirty secret: the ease with which senior Nazis, including Dr Josef Mengele, the barbaric 'Angel of Death' of Auschwitz, lived in Argentina after the Second World War. Their publication completes a pledge made in February by President Milei that he will lift the shroud with which
