Karnataka blames Centre for shortage of fertilizers

Blaming the Centre's policy this year for the shortage of urea and Diammonium Phosphate (DAP) in the State, the Agriculture Department on Monday said that the supply of fertilizers had been reduced and the government had appealed six times since April to the Centre. Chief Minister Siddaramaiah also accused the Centre as being 'anti farmer' and alleged that the Centre was not supplying the required quantity of fertilizers. 'There has been no response to the State's request for more fertilizers. A week ago, the State requested the Centre to supply additional quantities,' the Chief Minister said in Maddur. Among the reasons cited for the shortage in the State are that sowing began before the normal period owing to good and early rains and also that the sowing area expanded, increasing the demand for urea. The cultivation of maize increased by an estimated 2 lakh hectares and in Dharwad and Gadag districts re-sowing has been done on 13,000 hectares. The sowing commenced earlier because the command areas of the Krishna, the Cauvery, and the Tungabhadra received water, the department said. In the last three years, the department said, the Centre had supplied all fertilizers without considering the stock available and that there had also been no shortage of urea. This year, the Centre has considered the opening stocks. This resulted in the supply of 11.17 lakh tonnes of urea in this kharif season as against the demand for 12.95 lakh tonnes. Between April and July, as against the demand for 3.02 lakh tonnes of DAP, the Centre supplied 2.21 lakh tonnes. With respect to urea, as against the demand for 6.8 lakh tonnes between April and July, the Centre has supplied 5.35 lakh tonnes. 'The State has managed to supply all the fertilizers received from the Centre across all districts. Since April, the State has appealed to the Centre for demand-linked supply of fertilizers six times. The officials have been seeking fertilizers during the weekly video conferences. The Agriculture Minister has not only written to the Union Fertilizers Minister, but also met the Union Agriculture Minister on July 7,' the release said. Further, Mr. Siddaramaiah has also written to the Union Fertilizers Minister on July 17 and 25 considering the shortage, it added. 'When the shortage of DAP was noticed, on the instructions of Agriculture Minister (N. Cheluvarayaswamy), the shortage was overcome by creating awareness among the farmers on the use of alternative nano fertilizer,' it said.

DKS will become CM when time is right: Mandya MLA

M andya: Amid ongoing speculations about DCM DK Shivakumar becoming chief minister, Mandya MLA P Ravikumar asserted that his leadership will materialise when the time is right. "138 MLAs stand firmly behind DK Shivakumar and Siddaramaiah. When time and circumstances align, he will certainly become the chief minister. Timing and opportunity bring results — he deserves the post and will take it when destined," he said. Reacting to BJP state president Vijayendra's "revolution" remark, Ravikumar stated, "While they talk of revolutions, we believe in a mantra of peace. We avoid responding to opposition provocations. The decision rests solely with the high command. Both the chief minister and deputy chief minister have clarified their positions, and MLAs support both leaders." Dismissing reports about Congress MLAs being in contact with the BJP, he added, "We're not in touch with anyone. BJP attempted to lure our MLAs, even offering Rs 100 crore, but none defected. Having failed, they're now sitting quietly at home." MySugar School project "Regarding the proposed MySugar School project, instructions have been issued to the managing director to prepare a detailed blueprint within a month. Farmers should shift to green manure as Centre to slash urea supply by 50%: Cheluvarayaswamy

Minister for Agriculture N. Cheluvarayaswamy, who reviewed the agricultural activity in the Mysuru Division on Friday, said that farmers will be weaned away from using urea and chemical fertilizers in a phased manner. Speaking to reporters at Naganahalli, the Minister said Prime Minister Narendra Modi has announced that the Centre will slash urea supply by 50% in the days ahead, and hence, the farmers should brace for the change. Mr. Cheluvarayaswamy said this was inevitable to reduce the use of chemicals in fertilizers, and farmers will be encouraged to shift to green fertilizers. In reply to a question, Mr. Cheluvarayaswamy said that he recently visited a farm. and the farmer has stopped using chemicals for the last 10 years. But there has been no decline in crop output, he added. The Minister said that for decades, the farmers were advised to use chemicals and urea-based fertilizers, and they were quite used to the practice. So it may be difficult for them to make the shift suddenly. Farmers will be reoriented to eschew the use of chemical fertilizers, he added. Since scientific studies were proving the deleterious impact of the use of chemical fertilizers, it was essential to rollback their use and shift to green alternatives, Mr. Cheluvarayaswamy said, adding that the government was creating awareness drive among the farmers in this regard. 'The Centre's decision in slashing the urea supply by 50% is a welcome move, and it is essential to preserve soil fertility,' said the Minister. In the review meeting, the Minister cautioned officials against negligence and dereliction of duty during field visits or apathy in the implementation of government schemes. The officials were instructed to guide farmers on alternative crops based on prevailing climatic conditions, to prioritise mechanisation, to implement Krishi Bhagya scheme, and to organic farming etc. The Minister emphasised that research findings should benefit the farmers, and they should be impressed upon the benefits of value addition in agricultural produce.
