Mayawati urges party workers to support Akash Anand
A day after defending the re-induction of her nephew Akash Anand into the party fold, Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) national president Mayawati on Tuesday urged party workers to support and encourage the young leader. Anand was recently reinstated after being removed from party's responsibilities in March earlier this year.
In a detailed post on social media platform X, Mayawati addressed the internal dynamics of the party, stating that some BSP members, due to 'ignorance, over-enthusiasm, carelessness, or being misled by opposition conspiracies', are occasionally relieved of responsibilities and even expelled in serious cases.
'Some of them are re-inducted in the interest of the party and the movement after they apologise. Similar actions are seen in other political parties as well,' she emphasised.
While specifically naming Akash Anand, Mayawati said that 'some selfish and saleable elements within the Bahujan Samaj who have floated their own parties to divide the BSP vote have been spreading false propaganda in the media about his return.'
'Party workers should be cautious of such opportunistic elements,' she said, adding, 'They should also encourage Akash Anand so that he can contribute whole-heartedly to the party. Similarly, all others who are re-inducted into the party should be given full respect in the party's interest and movement to regain the keys to power.'
'There is nothing personal in these decisions. It is entirely about advancing the mission of Babasaheb Dr Bhimrao Ambedkar,' she said. She called on party members to remain vigilant and united, keeping the larger goals of social justice and empowerment at the forefront.
Mayawati criticised the opposition parties for their reactions to the BSP's internal decisions, accusing them of double standards. 'When people are expelled from our party for indiscipline or immaturity and later reinstated after they realise their mistakes, opposition parties like the Congress and BJP term it 'Aaya Ram Gaya Ram'. But when they do the same, they call it a matter of party interest,' she said, adding such criticism is part of a larger conspiracy to tarnish the BSP's image.

Ambedkar's statue ‘vandalised' in Hoshiarpur; SFJ's Pannun booked
A first information report (FIR) was registered against unknown persons after a statue of Dr BR Ambedkar was allegedly found vandalised on Tuesday. The statue was installed on top of a private building in Noorpur Jattan village in Garhshankar sub-division. Pro-Khalistan leader Gurpatwant Singh Pannun of the banned outfit 'Sikhs For Justice' (SFJ) has claimed responsibility for the statue vandalism on social media. Village sarpanch Shingara Ram denied any such incident, stating that marks on the statue's hands were old, but Bahujan Samaj Party and Ambedkar Sena of India leaders took a serious note of it and demanded strict action against the accused. BSP leaders have even threatened to start an agitation if the culprits are not arrested within a week. The FIR has been lodged on the complaint of Ambedkar Sena general secretary Kulwant Singh Bhuno who said that he came to know about the vandalism through a video which is circulating on social media. The video shows a hand cutter being used to damage the statue's hand but the sarpanch said that there was no electricity connection in the vicinity. He said he had spoken to the NRI son of the deceased land owner at whose building the statue was installed and he had confirmed that the damage was old. The sarpanch said the panchayat was planning to shift the statue to a Valmiki Temple in Mahilpur. Meanwhile, Hoshiarpur superintendent of police (investigation) Dr Mukesh Kumar said an FIR under sections 298 (injuring or defiling a place of worship) and 61(2) (criminal conspiracy) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita has been registered at Mahilpur Police Station against Pannun and some unidentified persons. Garhshankar deputy superintendent of police Jaspreet Singh said that the statue had been cordoned off and the police were examining the video. Garhshankar MLA Jai Kishan Singh Rori also visited the site and condemned the incident. BSP state president Avtar Singh Karimpuri has demanded an inquiry into the matter and said if the culprits were not arrested within a week, his party would hold a protest in Garhshankar.

BSP bid to woo OBCs to regain lost ground ahead of 2027 polls in U.P.
The Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) has launched an outreach programme to mobilise support from the Other Backward Classes (OBCs) in a bid to regain lost ground in Uttar Pradesh ahead of the 2027 assembly elections. BSP state unit president Vishwanath Pal said the party is organising OBC cadre camps in all 403 assembly constituencies across U.P, aiming to win back the support of backward communities that have been the backbone of the party since its inception in 1984. Party leaders and office-bearers have been directed to hold cadre camps in rural areas of each constituency. The district and assembly unit functionaries will reach out to OBC voters and apprise them of the welfare schemes launched by the previous BSP governments, Pal said. He added that the party would also inform OBCs about its future plans for their empowerment if it forms the government in 2027. The progress of these cadre camps will be reviewed monthly at the party's state headquarters. Members of backward communities, including Kurmi, Maurya, Kushwaha, Rajbhar, Pal, Nishad, Nai, Noniya, Bind, Mallah, Gujjar, and Prajapati, have been inducted into the camps. The BSP has also reactivated its 'bhai-chara' committees comprising members of various OBC groups, to consolidate its base among these voters. After losing power in the 2012 assembly elections, BSP president Mayawati attempted to woo Muslim voters. Community leaders were made zonal and divisional coordinators, and Muslim candidates received a lion's share of tickets in the 2014, 2019, and 2024 Lok Sabha elections, as well as in the 2017 and 2022 assembly polls. However, the BSP candidates lost in Muslim-dominated constituencies. Following its defeat in the 2022 assembly and 2024 Lok Sabha elections, Mayawati blamed the Muslim community for the party's dismal performance, stating that they preferred the Samajwadi Party and the Congress to the BSP. Mayawati has now instructed the party to refocus on backward communities. According to Vivek Kumar, a political observer, BSP founder Kanshi Ram worked on the Dalit- OBC formula to spread the Bahujan movement in U.P. The message was that Dalit-OBC could grab power. He got the support of the Kurmi community that was at loggerheads with the Yadavs. Kurmi leaders like Jang Bahadur Patel, Sone Lal Patel, Barkhu Ram Verma, and Lalji Verma joined the BSP, as did Rajbhar leaders like Sukhdev Rajbhar, Om Prakash Rajbhar, Ramachal Rajbhar. Noniya leader Dara Singh Chauhan as well as leaders from Maurya, Kushwaha, Nishad, Nai and Bind communities also came to the party fold, Kumar noted. 'Later, Sone Lal Patel launched Apna Dal and Om Prakash Rajbhar launched the SBSP, but the BSP's hold over the backward communities continued. In the 2014 Lok Sabha elections, the BJP projected Narendra Modi as the backward face of the party and worked on the rainbow coalition of upper castes, OBCs and Dalits to break into the BSP's support base. In the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, the SP played the PDA (Pichhda, Dalit, Alpsankhyak) card to win over non-Yadav backward communities,' Kumar said. The shift of the OBCs towards the BJP and SP has led to the weakening of the BSP and its defeats in successive elections. To regain the lost base, the BSP leadership is now working to woo the OBCs by organising cadre camps, he added. SK Srivastava, another political analyst, recalled that Kanshi Ram launched the All-India SC, ST, OBC and Minority Employees Association (BAMCEF) in 1971 and the Dalit Shoshit Samaj Sangharsh Samiti (DS4) in 1981 to mobilise support from the SC/ST, OBC and minority communities. In 1984, he floated the BSP to grab political power. The BSP will have to win the support of OBCs to regain its lost ground in U.P, he added.

BSP plans to increase its tally to 30, chalks out poll strategy
Nagpur: After BJP and Congress, it is the Bahujan Samaj Party ( BSP ) that is a major player in the Nagpur civic body polls, even emerging the third-largest party in the 2017 polls. With 10 seats under its belt, BSP is now gearing up to increase the tally to 30 and has chalked out a strategy for the same. BSP leader Prakash Gajbhiye said, "A huge population resides in slums and lower-income areas within Nagpur city, and those in power have neglected this completely. I can show you so many places in Nagpur where there is no proper sewage system, no proper roads, and the water supply is also not regular. People have realised that BJP or Congress will never solve these problems; hence they will turn to BSP for that." The party has also worked out their targeted seats in the NMC assembly constituencies, highlighting their preparedness. Gajbhiye said, "Our maximum seats will come from North Nagpur, for which our target is 15. The next highest will be from South-West, where we hope to bag around seven seats. Then in the West and South, our target is three each. And for Central, it is two seats. Now, this is the minimum target, but we are confident of getting much more. " He added that BJP's strategy of regularisation of land and building pucca homes, which can help connect with voters, won't work in the polls. Regarding Vanchit Bahujan Aghadi (VBA), Gajbhiye said, "People now realise that VBA won't be able to have any impact on their lives. "We are planning for two major rallies in Maharashtra. One will be in Mumbai and the other in Nagpur. If Behenji holds a rally, then the entire voting dynamic changes at one stroke," said Gajbhiye.
