Brother of late NFL player turned war hero Pat Tillman jailed in California post office crash
No one was injured in the 2:30 a.m. collision in San Jose, but it damaged the building and may have resulted in some destroyed mail, San Jose Fire Battalion Chief Josh Staley said.
Richard Tillman, 44, a San Jose resident, was being held in lieu of $60,000 bail following his arrest Sunday, according to Santa Clara County inmate records. San Jose police said he was arrested on suspicion of arson.
Fire officials said the collision appeared to have sparked a blaze at the post office that was knocked down about 90 minutes after the first reports of the crash.
In a statement to NBC Bay Area, sent on behalf of the Tillman family, brother Kevin Tillman acknowledged the suspect is his sibling Richard Tillman.
The statement expressed relief that no one was injured and said Richard Tillman had been suffering from mental health problems.
"To be clear, it's no secret that Richard has been battling severe mental health issues for many years," Kevin Tillman said, noting that his brother's issues have been on display "for anyone to witness" via his livestreams.
"Unfortunately, securing the proper care and support for him has proven incredibly difficult — or rather, impossible," Kevin Tillman said. "As a result, none of this is as shocking as it should be."
Richard Tillman was scheduled to be in court for the matter on Wednesday. It's not clear if he has retained legal counsel for the case.
The Pat Tillman Foundation did not respond to requests for comment.
Last week, Los Angeles Fire Department firefighter David Walters and firefighter-paramedic Erin Regan accepted the Pat Tillman Award for Service at ESPN's 2025 ESPYS at the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles.

Another high-profile member of the Browns, rookie quarterback Shedeur Sanders, was pulled over twice for speeding prior to training camp. In one of the incidents, Sanders was pulled over for going 91mph in a 65mph zone.

NFL hits back in Jon Gruden lawsuit after disgraced ex-Raiders coach scored huge win over the league
The NFL has announced its intention to appeal a Nevada Supreme Court decision which will allow former Las Vegas Raiders coach Jon Gruden to proceed with a lawsuit against the league while avoiding arbitration. Gruden filed a suit against the NFL and commissioner Roger Goodell in 2021, alleging the league conducted a 'malicious and orchestrated campaign' to destroy his career when they revealed emails sent by him containing racist, misogynistic, and homophobic comments. Gruden would inevitably resign from the Raiders in October 2021 and then promptly sued the league. He alleged in his complaint that he was 'forced to resign', and he has since been open in his desires to return to the world of coaching in some capacity in the future. Monday's decision by the Nevada Supreme Court ensures that Gruden's lawsuit against the league cannot be forced behind closed doors into arbitration. In a 5-2 decision, the court sided with Gruden and found that the arbitration clause in the NFL's rulebook is 'unconscionable' because it would allow Goodell to arbitrate disputes over his own conduct. 'We're very pleased with the Nevada Supreme Court's decision, not just for Coach Gruden but for all employees facing an employer's unfair arbitration process,' the ex-Raiders coach's attorney Adam Hosmer-Henner said in a statement. 'This victory further vindicates Coach Gruden's reputation, and it clears the way to swiftly bringing him full justice and holding the NFL accountable.' However, nearly one day later, the NFL has lodged and appeal and will go back to the same court - requesting a re-hearing from them. Since his resignation, Gruden has returned to his career in media. The e-mails that led to him leaving his job were sent while he was a color commentator for ESPN from 2011-2018. Gruden signed a multi-year contract with Barstool Sports last November - but he has also claimed he is keen to return to coaching. According to The Detroit Free Press, on Monday, Gruden told reporters: 'Hopefully I'm not done. I'm about to make a comeback. 'I'm working hard to maybe get one more shot, but hopefully some of these guys that fell off my branch, if you say it that way, maybe they can hire me cause I'm looking for a job. I don't care if I coach at Jones Junior High. I'm going to coach again. 'I'm still coaching. The NFL will appeal the Nevada Supreme Court's ruling Monday that former Las Vegas Raiders coach Jon Gruden can proceed with his lawsuit and not go through the league for arbitration. The league will request a rehearing from the same court that overturned a prior Nevada Supreme Court panel ruling in May 2024 that the matter could go to arbitration. But in October, Gruden was granted a hearing by the full court. Gruden filed a lawsuit in 2021 against the NFL and Commissioner Roger Goodell, alleging that a 'malicious and orchestrated campaign' to destroy his career by leaking old emails he sent that included racist, misogynistic and homophobic comments that pressured the Raiders to fire him. Gruden resigned from the Raiders in October 2021 and sued the league a month later. In 2022, the NFL appealed to Nevada's high court after a judge in Las Vegas rejected league bids to dismiss Gruden's claim outright or to order out-of-court talks through an arbitration process that could be overseen by Goodell. The Nevada Supreme Court, in a 5-2 ruling, said that 'the arbitration clause in the NFL Constitution is unconscionable and does not apply to Gruden as a former employee.' Gruden was an on-air analyst at ESPN from 2011-18 when the emails were sent. He was the Raiders' coach when the team moved in 2020 to Las Vegas from Oakland, California.
