Key Panathinaikos ace ruled out of Champions League decider vs Rangers

Panathinaikos are relying on a bumper crowd at the Olympic Stadium to help them overturn the 2-0 deficit - something they have never managed to do on seven previous attempts.
But they will have to do it without 39-times capped star Siopis, who had a spell in the English Championship with Cardiff City until he moved to Panathinaikos earlier this year.
Read more:
Panathinaikos stated: "Our preparation for the rematch against Rangers continued this weekend with morning training sessions at our stadium.
"However, Manolis Siopis underwent treatment for a first-degree sprain to his sacrum in his spine that he suffered in Friday's training session.
"After a scan, he is expected to be out of action for approximately ten days."
The Greeks are already without the suspended Giorgos Vayannidi, after he was sent off at Ibrox in the first leg.

Celtic ‘in the mix' to sign Manchester City starlet who's started in UCL but ‘face competition from Championship sides'

CELTIC boss Brendan Rodgers urged his board to make more new signings after their 5-1 friendly defeat to Ajax. And the Hoops are reportedly looking to add defensive reinforcements from the top of the English Premier League. Simpson-Pusey made his first City appearance against the Hoops last summer, starting in a friendly in North Carolina which Celts won 4-3. The centre-back made his senior debut last season too and played six times in total for Pep Guardiola's side, including starts in the Premier League and Champions League. Those starts came during a difficult spell for City though and included a 4-1 defeat to Sporting CP, with Simpson-Pusey returning to the club's academy team for the last few months of the campaign. Advertisement The 19-year-old ended up being named Premier League 2 Player of the Year as he captained City to the title, and now reportedly wants to test himself back in senior football. The report claims that Celts will face competition from the English Championship for Simpson-Pusey, but that their status as a European side who will be competing for titles could make them favourites for his signature. It's also reported that the Manchester native will be the one to decide his destination for the 25/26 season. Rodgers has already seen central defenders Maik Nawrocki and Gustaf Lagerbielke move on this summer, with Stephen Walsh possibly also on the way out. Advertisement Simpson-Pusey would be the latest in a line of players to star for both the Hoops and City. The 2000s saw the likes of Craig Bellamy, Georgios Samaras and Willo Flood feature for both sides. Shock scenes as Celtic and Ajax fans clash during Como Cup friendly tournament in Italy City's 2008 takeover and subsequent success meant that many of the ex-Blues to play for Celtic in the 2010s were younger players sent to cut their teeth north of the border. Amongst them were stars such as Scott Sinclair, Patrick Roberts and Jeremie Frimpong. Advertisement Keep up to date with ALL the latest news and transfers at the Scottish Sun football page

Propper has no regrets despite swift Twente return

Robin Propper says "I haven't regretted" joining Rangers despite the Dutch centre-half returning to Twente for an undisclosed fee after only a season with the Scottish Premiership 31-year-old has signed a four-year contract with the Eredivisie club after being told he was not in new Rangers head coach Russell Martin's plans."Last season, I had the opportunity to play for a major international team," he told Twente's website."I couldn't pass up the opportunity, even though the decision wasn't easy, especially since we were close to the start of the new season with Twente. Nevertheless, I decided to make that choice. I haven't regretted it."It was a great year, both personally and in terms of sport, with all sorts of new experiences."However, Propper said "the choice isn't difficult" to return to the club where he was captain and where the team spirit "is so strong".Of his time in Glasgow, he added: "It was an eye-opener for me. I wasn't aware of how foreign boys feel when they come to the Netherlands. I think they need attention and time."In a year you experience a lot. I have noticed that now. In a foreign country, certain things are different. I'm glad that I was able to experience that."I played a lot of games. I had a lot of beautiful moments. Also a little less. "Of course I want to say that I had a great adventure at a beautiful club with a rich history. I always wanted that in my career."

His League One side stormed into the last 16 draw with four wins from four to top Group C, including the scalps of Premiership Dundee and Championship Airdrie. 2 Alloa boss Andy Graham Credit: Michael Schofield 2 He's already pulled off an upset against Premiership side Dundee this season Credit: Michael Schofield And they've been rewarded with a glittering tie and big pay-day for the club against Russell Martin's team at Ibrox. Holders Celtic have got a home tie against newly promoted Falkirk. Incredibly, part-time Alloa are unbeaten in their last two meetings against the Gers, including a draw at Ibrox in the Championship in April, 2016. Indeed, over nine previous matches the little club from Clackmannanshire have only lost three times, with a sensational 3-2 victory in the League Challenge Cup in 2014. Graham - over 250 games as an Alloa player and boss since 2023 - told SunSport: 'I didn't see the draw because I was out with my family. 'But my phone exploded, so I knew immediately who we'd got! 'It's a fantastic game - the players will be really excited while I'm sure the club will also be happy. 'It's the kind of game you want, a big team and a great stadium. 'It's a really good draw and one the players deserve for the way they qualified from the group. 'I think we're the only team from out-with the top two divisions to get through, so we have to be proud of that. Rangers transfer special assesses whether Conor Coady deal is OFF, if Hamza Igamane will leave and when the Gers can expect more incomings 'It's a game for us to enjoy - but we must also go to Ibrox and BELIEVE. 'I remember going to Parkhead, when Jack Ross was manager, nine years ago and Celtic were flying. We'd also had a good start to the season. 'We pushed them all the way. 'We lost a goal in the 83rd minute to James Forrest and then Moussa Dembele later made it 2-0. 'But we gave it a really good go that night. 'Of course Rangers will be heavy favourites - but you have to go there and believe you can cause an upset. 'The players have been fantastic in the Cup group stage and their confidence levels are high. Premier Sports Cup draw Celtic v Falkirk Kilmarnock v Dundee United Rangers v Alloa Livingston v Hibs St Johnstone v Motherwell Morton v Aberdeen Partick Thistle v Ayr United St Mirren v Hearts. 'We've got very important games before that in the league, starting with the opener at Stenhousemuir on Saturday. 'But the Rangers tie is a big one to look forward to. It's what you play football for, the players will want to test themselves against the quality they've got.' On Alloa's remarkable recent stats against Rangers, Graham said: 'It's incredible. There aren't many clubs in Scotland who'd have that record. 'We'll go to Ibrox and I'll want the players to showcase their talent, show just how good they are.' Scottish Cup winners Aberdeen go to Morton while St Mirren host Hearts, Dundee United visit Kilmarnock and Hibs travel to Livingston. Ties will be played weekend August 16-17.
